tv-card configuration in Suse 9.1

Hi all, Yesterday I did a clean install of Suse 9.1. My tv-card (Pinnacle PCTV) did get recognized properly and I could watch television on my pc. The problem I had was that I didn't have any sound. I tried different sound settings from the configuration panel in kdetv, but it wouldn't work. This morning when I turned on my computer I couldn't watch tv anymore. The appropriate device (bt878) was no longer in the list under "Devices" in kdetv. I removed the card from the configuration center and added it again. When I tried to scan for channels I got an error message saying that /dev/video0 doesn't exist. How can I fix it and how do I get sound? Kind regards, Bert Meersma

I am Suse user too for many years and I also play those games you mentioned but if you are interested in good Linux games and a large amount of them then I can recommend you checking out www.gcclinux.com/forum. There is section which many downloads available to everyone just click on the big logo on the top left but there is also a download are from the forum members with many more games and fanatics description and layout. I get many of my get there! Including the latest versions of games that are already installed automatically with Suse set-up. It’s a good site defiantly worth having a look at. Games worth checkin out on SuSE.

I can recommend these games running on SuSE (my distro is 8.2 personal): 1. Enemy Territory www.castlewolfenstein.com Then go to 'Enemy Territory' link and find the linux download. This is a free download and can only be played online. 2. Unreal 2004 http://www.unrealtournament.com/ut2004/downloads.php Then find the linux download. This is a demo but fully playable. My system specs: 1.8 AMD NVIDIA TI4200 Gig of RAM. Nothing special about my system specs but the games play and look superb with OpenGL. Games are what have kept me dual booting to Windows but now, having downloaded these two I am seriously considering removing Windows from this system altogether. Does anyone else have recommend games of this caliber that run on SuSE? -- Paul.

Hello, i having some issues where if one application is using the sound card (in this instance xmms) no other applications (thunderbird, gaim..) can use the card. How can i add 'channel' support so that more than one app can use the card? The card i have is Gateway 2000 82801DB (ICH4) AC'97 Audio

Getting sound out of CD players

I have a relatively simple question: My sound system appears to work fine. I get all sorts of sounds (real and test.) But none of the CD players that comes with Suse 9.1 can produce any sound, such as KsCD and xmcd. These players actually start playing, and the display indicates that the CD is being played: time and tracks advance normally. But there is no sound. I must be missing one simple but vital setting. Conexant chipset CX2388X - please help

I have the Leaktek Winfast DV2000 tvtuner which uses the above chipset. I am also running Suse 9.1 Pro with the 2.6.5-7.71 kernel, and I can see that the CX88 driver is loadable as a module by the kernel. The DV2000 is not listed in the Suse list of installable tvtuners but there are a number of tuners around which also use this chipset. I've tried several combinations of Vendors/Cards - Tuner - Kernel Module & Parameter but I have not been lucky enough to find the correct combinaton. Sound Problem SuSE 9.1, KDE 3.2.3 need help

Hi: I have done a clean install of SuSE 9.1. I have turned on sound for all applications. I have checked sound levels in kmix and gamix all levels are above 90%, nothing appears to be muted. I get good sound when playing cd's, and with kaffiene when viewing .wma video streams. But I have no sound when playing progame sound events, or when clicking on .ogg, or .wav files. Xmms opens and the sound level bars move, but no sound out of the speakers. Could some one help me restore full sound. Thank you for your help. -- Yours, Ralph. I am a very recent convert to Linux from Win98. I am currently using the SuSE 9.0 Pro distribution though I have plans to upgrade to v9.1 in the very near future. I have searched the past year's archives for this list and found no reference to my problem. I just hope I'm addressing the proper list. I have attempted to listen to some streaming audio from the net. I receive a *.asx file but I don't seem to be able to make use of it. Any helpful advice will be appreciated. -- Jim

Switching users and audio device permissions

Hello, All I really like the ability to switch users quickly in SUSE 9.1 by having each set up a separate X session. However, without co-operation from the first logged-in user, the second cannot access the sound devices. Say, I log in as alistair, then: alistair@irma:~> ls -l /dev/dsp0 crw------- 1 alistair audio 14, 0 2004-04-06 14:27 /dev/dsp0 Then, if another user logs in, they cannot access the audio device because they do not have permission to so do (and the mixer /dev/mixer0 is just the same). The original user can chmod the devices to grant at least g+rw, but that is not really satisfactory. What would be much better is to ensure that audio devices had group read and write permissions by default, and preferably belonged to a "neutral" user (i.e. not a real user of the system). Any ideas as to how this might be achieved? The machines are not connected to the outside world, so security is not a problem (and all the local users know root's password anyway). I have found a work around. I created this script called alsa_set_mixer.sh: #!/bin/sh amixer set PCM 100 unmute amixer set PC\ Speaker 100 unmute amixer set Master 50 unmute amixer set Master\ Mono 50 unmute amixer set Phone 22 unmute amixer set Aux 100 unmute amixer set Video 100 unmute amixer set CD 100 unmute amixer set Line 100 unmute amixer set Mic 22 unmute amixer set VIA\ DXS 100 unmute and saved it into /usr/local/sbin, chmod +x alsa_set_mixer.sh Created a softlink in my home dir to alsa_set_mixer.sh: ln -s /usr/local/sbin/alsa_set_mixer.sh alsa_set_mixer.sh Edited my .profile to call alsa_set_mixer.sh I also added a softlink to alsa_set_mixer.sh in my .kde/Autostart directory (because for some reason KDE isn't running my .profile) Now sound works at boot! Hello to every one. I recently purchased Suse 9.1and installed it onto new a harddrive beside WinXP. I am a complete newcomer to Linux, but I would say that my cpmputer experience is beyond moderate. Every thing works beautifully except that I do not have sound with Suse. Every thing works fine in XP. I have run YaST several times and tried to add my sound card to no avail. It sees it and tells me it has the driver, but refuses to fully install it. I greatly appreciate any help I receive in this matter. Thank you all. I have an Asus K8V Deluxe running 9.1 (32bit), Alsa 1.0.5. Suse identifies the sound card as a A7600 motherboard with an ADI AD1980 sound card. Sound works great but everytime the system is rebooted the VIA DXS levels are reset to 0. If I set the levels in YAST to 100 everything works until I reboot and the VIA DXS levels go back to 0. gamix shows the levels as 0 and once I open the sound module in YAST the levels in gamix for VIA DXS jump to 100 and sound works. Where are the default levels stored that are read on boot up. I have grep'ed but haven't found it yet. Thanks, gabriel

My tv-card is connected to my soundcard by means of a cable. I have a dual boot system with windows, and there it works fine. I saw something on the mailinglist of kdetv about using kmix and kamix. I'm gonna try that. But the problem I'm facing at the moment is that I can't watch anything at all. The tv-card isn't listed in the devices menu anymore. I haven't got any idea how to get it back in there. I tried several things now, but nothing seems to work. I get the error message that /dev/video0 doesn't exists. But that's not true, because I can see it when I go to /dev. But thanks for the tips. Thanks for the help guys. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. I did the online update. I already did that when I installed Suse, but now I also updated the kernel. Then I did the mknod thing. So now I have a /dev/video0 again. But when I want to scan for channels from the configuration center, I still get the following error message: v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device or address Also in kdetv, the card doesn't show up in the menu "Devices". Any more tips?
