[opensuse-edu] security issues regarding italc client startup

Hi, I recently noticed that the italc client is being started as the user that logged in, and this allowed them to kill the italc client and escape my control. i traced the problem and found that you have switched to using /etc/sysconfig/ica instead of patching the /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup script. I also noticed that it no longer runs at the logon screen. both features ( running at the logon screen, inability to kill italc for users ) are very important to me, especially the users inability to kill the italc client. Is there any hope that this situation will change in the future, or are there workarounds to stop users from killing the italc client? [opensuse-edu] RFC: Join Education:desktop and Education:server to Education

Hi @ll I like to join the current Education:desktop and Education:server repositories into one big "Education" repository. Currently the split between those two repositories is just to split the desktop from the server applications, which is IMO obsolete. So - if nobody raises an objection - I like to merge the two repositories into one "Education" repository next week: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Education/ As this needs adjustments for current package-_links and registered repositores, I'll write an additional announcement next week if everybody is fine with this. [opensuse-edu] Call for Case Studies in UK Schools

Hi All, The Becta sponsored SOSP project has put out a call for schools for case studies. I realise that it is holiday time - but the timing was not under my control! They are looking for state schools in the UK who are using Free and Open Source Software - anything from server solutions, through OpenOffice.org to complete desktop solutions. At Schoolforge.org.uk, we would also like to update our case studies and we are happy to accept independent school case studies. Anyway, can anyone who is still active please respond to the list, in the first case, with suggestions please! Been looking at the solutions provided and have not really been impressed. Kde kiosk does look good but needs a reliable way of being propergated across the pcs. Nfs does have its limitations in that when the network is down all we can do is sit on our hands. With things like karushi and openschoolserver they look nice but are massive over kill. We already have a very expencive infastructure which makes 98% of it redundent. All we need is something to manage the suse desktops. So it looks like I going to have to be a programmer - joy - can really see why Linux is doing so well in the uk edu. I can't see our position being much different from most uk schools/FE as we got reasable kit from gov money. We looking to try and pump prime FOSS in the north east (well our little bit) in our computing course. Also think small, this is a dept trying this out. We currently out on our own as IT support will not touch it. From the look of it suse edu looks good as a demo but get above ten installs it starts turning into a pig. Also looked at ltsp and it is really not what we want, as far as I can tell, as our environent is not thin. Also after trawling through pages on how to get local apps I gave up, hopefully that will improve over time. One problem I see is that how do you manage a room full of suse boxes? Users management are pretty sorted through AD support. Patching through auto update seemed ok. But how do you install software to rooms of pcs with out login into each one? How do you do things like group polices for access to applications? Things like managing the start menu etc. For mac there the xserver which does all this, and for windows you can get apps. What is there for Linux? Sun has some thing for it's sun rays and java desktop. But were using suse with the edu software. Surely some one else must have run into this problem? Hi = Build Service = Just FYI: Today I found out, that SLE-10-SP2 is already synced into the buildservice ;-) => So I've added SLE-10-SP2 as Build Repository for Education:desktop and Education:server. I think some packages that fail in the SP1 repository should build now in SP2. But as SP1 is still maintained, I leave the current SLE-10 repository as it is. Additional changes in the 11.0 repository. Found out, that python-visual didn't build because of a bug in the original boost package. So I've enabled the 11.0-Update repository and now python-visual builds fine :-) As result, most of the packages are triggered for rebuild on 11.0 and SLE-10-SP2 now - which should not be a problem. But as SLE-10-SP2 is a "new" repository, all RPMs that are disabled for SLE-10 (SP1) will fail in this repository as they are not disabled. So I'm asking if somebody has enough time to check the SLE-10-SP2 failures against the SLE-10 repository and disable/enable the packages acording to the SLE-10 repository? = SVN = I've re-aranged our SVN repository. Every subdirectory in the packages directory now has the tripple: branches/ tags/ trunk/ => trunk: this is the "head" of the current development. Every change should go here => branches: if someone wants to experimentalize something new, he can copy the current state from trunk and work in his own new directory => tags: think of the files here like "backups". Currently you can find a tag directory "10.3-release-1.0/" in some of the directories - containing the state of the package after the release of openSUSE-Education 1.0 for 10.3 In the end, you need to make a "svn up" before you proceed now. AND: everything is prepared for the 11.0 release - so please update the opensuse-education-docu now :-) = Some additional tools = As described on http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Development - we're currently using some tools (most of them are simple bash scripts) to help with packaging or ISO creation. I've created a new SVN directory: https://svn.linux-schulserver.de/viewvc/packages/opensuse-education-tools/t… (opensuse-education-tools) which now contains most of the stuff. If you find additional scripts/tools/whatever - feel free to add them here. I think we can create a package out of this SVN directory sometimes - but currently I don't see any need for this. Any questions about the scripts in this directory? Hi! At the linkat project we have a very good experience on using LTSP. One reason of such a success was that the administration became much easier than before. You need to connect the server through Gigabit. The clients do not need to go through Gigabit, but the server do. Look for a switch that can handle that. The server should be a good PC, as it is the key point and also the bottleneck of the design. If the server crashes, you lose the whole classroom. So, my advice is to get a brand new PC, with at least 4GB of RAM (this should be enough for 20 computers), dual core and RAID hard discs (it can be SATA discs). Some people would recommend you to buy a real server. It is not a bad idea, but you should look at the costs. Then you can use all the other computers as clients, even old computers that you may not be using. You could even buy thin clients (150€?) . I did a research some months ago about the costs of implementing classrooms using LTSP.
