Take a look at AutoYaST: http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/ Other options to consider are Norton Ghost (but your limited to using Ext2/3) or Clone In regard to CC3, North Manchester CLC went down that routewhen they were first set up, and apparently ripped out an active directory system because they couldnt get the policies to work, recently I've heared that that system too is in the process of being removed as well, so clearly isnt all that good or far too restrictive (imagine my surprize :) regards, Ben (currently spending half his week trying to keep a connect 2/win 98 system going a few months longer)

Ximian

Hi all: Has anyone managed to get Ximian working from download? I have tried on 2 machines at home with 9.0 and both times it downloads fine and installs to about 99.9999% and then crashes out saying that x file is not compatable. Also, at school my colleague has tried to install it on a test machine and with the proxy it downloads about 60% and then says "IO - Soup error". I assume this is security related but I'm not sure on more than that. That machine will not do online updates as in the error log it says that there is no public key for gnpgp. Is that related to Soup? Paul Ps If Michael Brown is reading, my e-mails are bouncing back as spam and my calls are not getting through. Is that related to Soup? Well guessing your refering to Ximian desktop rather than evolution, then yes I played with it over christmas on suse 9. Its a very nice,very polished version of Gnome 2.2, with lots of little fixes rather than anything hugely different. However unless your converting a group of mac users to linux or require corporate levels of support for windowmanagers I'd just install Gnome 2.4, IIRC ximian wont be upgraded until gnome goes to 2.6. As for the errors your getting, I cant be sure but wget can get a little troublesome with proxies, what are your settings in wgetrc? Regards, Ben

Sftp Client for windows.

Can anyone recommend a good simple sftp client for use on windows to allow secure file transfer to from a Linux web server? I am looking for something that I can install on our windows machines and Laptops for teachers laptops that will allow staff hopefully to drag and drop their resources onto our intranet. What do other schools use? I really want to avoid ftp as I don`t want to use plain text passwords over the internet if we allow access from beyond our firewall. Rob Keeling -- I love deadlines. Extremely frustrating intermitant printing problem.

We are running Suse Linux 8.2 with Samba 3.0.0.1 and Cups as our print server on a network with windows 98 and 2000 clients and HP1300, 2100, 2200 and 4050 printers. We are experiencing an intermitant error whereby the printer on the client machine will set itself to work off line and sometimes freeze up the pc when an attempt is made to print from it. This error does not happen in any consistant way an I have checked the samba and cups logs and cannot find anything which would seem to relate to the problem. I would be very grateful for any help provided by anyone who's experienced a similar problem or has any ideas how we can overcome this. Cheers Brett.

At Maidenhill School we have a very different system from many schools which combines systems from Unix, Linux, Windows, Apple and even Acorn. Our Unix server acts as system manager, web server, and mail server. We use Webmail by Precedence Technologies of Cambridge as a our mail reader and this meets the Becta spec. It also has a filtering system which dumps offensive e-mails in a box where they can be read and acted upon by teachers. The rest of our system is a mix of Windows PCs, Linux terminals, Unix PCs and even some Mac and old Acorn machines all running Citrix Metaframe centrally to deliver a mixture of software from the Microsoft and Open Source communities. It is available for 99% of the year, is accessible from home through a web browser and TCO is much lower than other systems. We can also run specialist software on local PC disks as required, eg. Cubase, Pinnacle, Quicktime without giving any access to the local machine to users. Like all systems it has a few problems but we are very pleased because it allows us to get on with educating. The technology cannot be tampered with and the interface is consistent. Whatever the local processor speed Metaframe runs at the central processor speed. Becta's other activities

Has anyone seen the test - bed program? http://www.becta.org.uk/corporate/corporate.cfm?section=15&id=3078#ans1 27 million pounds for 5 secondary schools and associated feeder schools ought to ensure that they get the right answers! Some time ago I emailed this program to ask if any of the testbed schools were using open source solutions - guess what the answer was. Is this in breach of the e-envoy's rules? I also offered to help them by becoming a testbed, so far I have not recieved a reply.
