A welcome from SchoolForge, for your interest. The kind of info I've forwarded here does indeed belong on a separate mailing list, but then discussions about Linux problems/solutions (and splitting hairs on definitions of free - politics raised its ugly head again, I noticed) would not belong on a SchoolForge UK list, only discussions about new developments of SchoolForge/UK, conferences, new resources, updates to relevant websites etc. So I think the vote isn't for one or the other, we need both. Next steps

Ok, pending any opinions to the contrary, schoolforge.org.uk will be the focus web presence. For those who want to get a better idea of how SchoolForge works, visit the international page: http://schoolforge.net We need someone to take on maintaining the website (which I guess can be based on the technologies used on the existing site, at least initially), and volunteers for all sorts of related activities, such as vetting companies/organisations who want to affiliate, acting as press contacts for specific publications, preparing press releases, etc. AFFS have kindly offered to host the website, along with the wiki. I think it will be of pressing importance to get and maintain UK case studies, and begin assembling content, preferably (strongly preferably!) linked to the English National Curriculum and other UK equivalents. It would also be particularly useful to make some content available in minority national languages (Welsh, Gaelic, Cornish) to underline the inclusive aspects of open source as a solution. And the proposed schedule? I'd want to see press releases with a embargo of 0100 on 25th April... Failing any objections, I will announce the founding of SchoolForge UK on the SchoolForge list at 1300 GMT today. Cheers Chris

New resource (school's oriented Helpdesk solution)

Hi Prolific today, aren't I? Don't worry, I'll keel over from exhaustion shortly! We are currently paying (peanuts!) for the development of a school helpdesk system. While primarily for managing IT issues, it has been designed to allow for other types of request, such as admin assistance and site repair requests. It's also built to deal invisibly (from user perspective) with multiple sites (we support 9 schools from here) and could easily scale to an entire LEA. And before you get discouraged, the demo etc. is here: http://helpdesk.centralmanclc.com As it understands multiple sites, this will continue to be the demo server after it goes live (in 2 weeks), so the knowledge base will hopefully become very useful. GPL, of course... All feature requests email the developer, but please CC me on (bit of a pet project this one...) Cheers Chris

On the bright side, it gets the technician to load Linux over W2K, which is a hell of an improvement... (assuming it's a recent version - 7.2 is pretty old like a 2.2 kernel I think). SSH is a very good way of remotely administering the box - have you tried this? I'm missing something here though - use MAC addresses for what? The upgrade problem is probably that the SuSE install will still be there and the new one is not in the path, or later in the path so is not being started. Have you tried stopping the squid service then running the newly installed one from its install directory? We have also tried downloading RPMs of VNC and like squid they do not appear to install. We've spent ages looking at the net regarding both of these problems but without joy. James, my technician is almost in tears and has decided to install LINUX over his beloved WIN2000 server at home so that he can get to the bottom of this! I'm sure that we're missing an obvious step or two, any ideas as to which obvious box we haven't ticked?
