For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. But GNU specifically covers passing off work as if it's your own. AFAIK software is rarely patented per se. You can patent new ideas but they tend to have physical representations before the patent office get interested. But things like the GIF format have escaped to the public domain despite private ownership - and that ownership has been reasserted; thus the development of png. Installing Spam Assasin with postfix on Suse 8.1

I am trying to add Spam assassin into a working installation of postfix, which is also configured to use amavis. All packages as supplied with suse 8.1. However I am completely lost in how to add Spam assassin, and if amavis does anything "out of the box" with suse. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I am working towards a email server for 1200 users consisting of postfix (with Spam filtering by Spam assassin) and cyrus IMAP and a web mail client. I have everything working bar the Spam filtering, (which is of course very important for us). Any suggestions, pointers to how-tos etc greatly apreciated. Role based security is on the DB side - bit like groups in network logons. Makes for easier admin as you can just give a user a role or roles and that gives them the appropriate accesses. Not clever... Python and other development work needed (funded!)

Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but I'm in hurry and this seemed the most likely place to source some suitably skilled and interested developers! Summary (1): want developers to create web app (possibly using Quixote, Webware or Zope) to act as UI for a school performance analysis project. Assumed architecture is Python middle/front, Postgre backend. Data structures already exist. Summary (2): need developers who want to wrap their head around pumping data in and out of SIMS and CMIS, preferably in real-time and with no end user intervention. Assumed technology is Python. fstab et al

Hi all: I have been working on (playing with) my linux box and am in something of a small pickle. It is a test box I use for my AVCE students so I tend to install and uninstall Linux quite a lot so they can see a real OS being worked with. It was working basically with 2 partitions on 1 drive (SuSE and a.n.other). I have now installed one Linux as hda1 and hda2 and then installed SuSE. I had installed some other Linux before but reformatted the SuSE partition. However, SuSE has assigned its partitions as hde3 (swap) and hde6. The other Linux boots as hda1 but I am using the SuSE partition to boot. I install the other Linux partition with SuSE but can only assign it to boot hde1. As the other partition boots up it gets to the root section and has a kernel panic as it can't find hde1. If I change the settings in fstab in the SuSE partiton to hda3 and 6 and the others to hda1 and 2, will this reset all of it or is ther another configuration file? I believe, though I don't know, that it also looks at the install logs of SuSE in which case it will not boot at all as it has hda in the fstab and hde somehwere else. Hope this makes sense? Paul

I was looking at the old OSiE website (http://osie.sourceforge.net/dynamic/osieweb/organisations.php?type=SCH) at the list of schools using Linux and I was wondering if anyone could fill in the history between then and now. I'm trying to discover whether they would consider being involved in the growing list of case-studies (as they were for OSiE). Manchester half-term is 27/10-31/10, so either of the first two would be fine for the schools here (us CLCs work right through, so all 3 are the same to us!). Aston uni might be a good bet. The suggestion for the location was Birmingham, so I was looking of those in the know to suggest a possible venue (capacity 200 ish plus) which is fairly reasonable priced. Also the dates of Friday the 10th, 17th or 24th October are in the frame. I'm not sure when half terms are and it would be good to have it on the Friday of the penultimate week of autumn half term. Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Mozilla Firebird

Just downloaded latest build of Phoenix, now known as Mozilla Firebird. Not officially released yet, but there's only 3 bugs left in the listings, so who cares ;-) It's very, very fast (both starting up and loading pages) and extremely pretty. However... does anyone know how I can lock it down and use it in an NT (all versions!) network, with mandatory profiles? This is part of the Linux migration plan on one of the sites (OOo/StarOffice and Mozilla on Windows as transition phase), so it's (a) important and (b) not as off-topic as it would first appear! I have just installed Debian woody on one of my desktops and after installed a 2.4.18 kernel and doing a dist-upgrade to sid have thought about installing a printer. I have downloaded and installed the free version of turboprint [www.turboprint.de] which got my new Canon i550 running and even did the print head calibrations; but, .... printing is still typically linux-cr*p :( with fonts being displayed on the screen but not on the sheet and the printed page being a little too big for the paper page. I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions on what I need to do re: fonts, printer config, etc to get to the happily ever after bit. Any suggestions? > The school I was at spent quite some time removing all the bluster and bullying to create a staff policy that acknowledged the fact that staff are old enough to vote (usually) and therefore can be responsible to a code of practice rather than a strict set of commandments. The end result was that it was easy to operate and enforce because common-sense actually prevailed. Staff were responsible for the wise use of Internet resources for educational purposes and we ran our own filters and proxies. So far as I know they still use the policy (4 years on) and have used it to my knowledge only three times up till last December with nodisciplinary action needed. We also ran a similar policy for pupils but with parental responsibility built-in (and signed for!) so that we could control student abuse. That was very useful for locking miscreants out of the system without huge wads of parental objection ("You signed to accept that your child would behave...") and was again easy to operate. We did not (and they still do not) allow students to have email accounts as a matter of course. Some sixth formers had email accounts created for them where required for their studies and we did look at using email accounts for the general school from the World Schools Network - since we decided that the legal requirements of monitoring student accounts balanced against their right to privacy wasn't worth the hassle. Ours is the same as the one we have for students. Users are users, as far as the network team is concerned. They have a different set of terms and conditions, such as "I agree to monitor the students in my care", but the policy is the same. Am happy to mail copies.

I posted a vote on the matter of "Which e-mail list?" on the Smartgroup site created by Paul Taylor, and you can see the results over at http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/os.education Basically, out of 11 voters: 3 want to use this SuSe list as the list for Schoolforge UK. 3 would like a new list @schoolforge.uk.org. 3 feel we should do both, with distinct purposes for each, 1 suggested we alias a new @schoolforge.org.uk list to this one, in effect merging the two. 1 suggested we continue with this list for now, while keeping the option open for a new list when we can see it's needed. The majority of voters are in favour of keeping this SuSe list as the vehicle for Schoolforge UK, at least for now. First thanks to Chris for putting himself out there to announce Schoolforge UK to the Schoolforge world. >From my colleagues at Ultralab (Stephen Heppell's lot) I got the offer of us taking a 'hot seat' spot on 'Talking Heads' (the virtual community of school leaders). AFAIK head teachers of all schools are eligable to be members, so when we have more to show them ( i.e. after bringing all the hoped for resources together) I think that could be a great opportunity to deliver information and stimualate debate in a highly focussed way. It's not organised yet but any thoughts on what to include would be useful - if nothing else it is a little seed aroud which other ideas can grow. Secondly I think the Wiki or website or whatever should be focussing as much on the idea of sharing knowledge and resources, and the philosopy of openness in education as it does on the technology of open source, or freely-distributed or whatever you want to call it software/solutions. I think it imperitive that Schoolforge UK is as inclusive and encouraging as possible - covering the philosophy that Stephen Heppel, Roger from SuSE and Diana Laurillard were talking about at the conference. Analogies with the 'scientific principle' are useful (standing on the shoulders of giants, networks of peer review etc) and I think strike a resonating chord with many more than those that just understand or are interested in the software. Get philosophical not evangelical!(in the words of Stephen Heppell). I'd also like to suggest a joint/combined/co-ordinated press release for Schoolforge UK to tie in with the conference one we're organising now at APU. I thought it would be useful to show the coming together at the conference and the springing forth of SchoolForge UK therefrom. Just a thought... What were we thinking of putting in the SchoolForge UK release? I'm not sure how many folks are using the list in the next week or so, but i'd like to apologise in advance for not replying to any responses as I'm on my hols until next Tuesday (22/4). Also I'd like to thank all those who have responded with case studies and encourage more to come forward into the light. James

This would definitely be a great move, except that CSV is inadequate for the task. PDF and XML are also space hungry formats. It may be better to persuade the owner of the resource to have an OOo version available (powerful, open and space efficient format). This has the added benefit of introducing people to OOo and its StarOffice relative in a positive way, while helping those schools/LEAs who've already moved in that direction gain access to resources. Yes, there is a site dedicated to this..and its really interesting. http://www.linuxinschools.org/ This is the best web-site I know of for case-studies. I love their slogan: "Open Source" -save money- employ more teachers They have case studies of schools that have migrated. Under the large banner for the case studies is a link to the best comparison I've ever seen. The author debates whether or now OSS software is the way to go, although its not school specific. Its aimed at the business world, which has different concerns. The UNESCO page is pretty nifty too. I hope you find something in all of that that is useful to you. Schools having to pay MS for machines not running their software if they enter MS Schools agreement. Currently being investigated by the office of fair trading contact Neil.Maxey(a)oft.gsi.gov.uk. Not much chance of getting Suse into schools if for every SuSe machine they have to pay MS license fees. 2. Lack of a strategy in the public sector to obtain best value by promoting competition in the desktop software market. 3. Infringement of privacy due to intrusive nature of MS applications on personal computers. Evidence at http://orange.math.buffalo.edu/csc/resolution2_april2003_approved.html 4. Any other issue you feel is appropriate in promoting an environment where Suse and other Linux distros can thrive. Best to be not too technical, or too emotional. client printer drivers for cups

I have set up a cups print server using SuSE 8.1 which seems to work really well from our Win 2K clients, but from our Windows 95/98 clients I can`to print colour! The problem is that I am using the Adobe postscript drivers, the win 98/95 version does not seem to generate the right sort of postscript with colour photos etc. Which printer drivers are other people using on older machines? Next steps

Ok, pending any opinions to the contrary, schoolforge.org.uk will be the focus web presence. For those who want to get a better idea of how SchoolForge works, visit the international page: http://schoolforge.net We need someone to take on maintaining the website (which I guess can be based on the technologies used on the existing site, at least initially), and volunteers for all sorts of related activities, such as vetting companies/organisations who want to affiliate, acting as press contacts for specific publications, preparing press releases, etc. AFFS have kindly offered to host the website, along with the wiki. I think it will be of pressing importance to get and maintain UK case studies, and begin assembling content, preferably (strongly preferably!) linked to the English National Curriculum and other UK equivalents. It would also be particularly useful to make some content available in minority national languages (Welsh, Gaelic, Cornish) to underline the inclusive aspects of open source as a solution. And the proposed schedule? I'd want to see press releases with a embargo of 0100 on 25th April... Failing any objections, I will announce the founding of SchoolForge UK on the SchoolForge list at 1300 GMT today. Cheers Chris

New resource (school's oriented Helpdesk solution)

Hi Prolific today, aren't I? Don't worry, I'll keel over from exhaustion shortly! We are currently paying (peanuts!) for the development of a school helpdesk system. While primarily for managing IT issues, it has been designed to allow for other types of request, such as admin assistance and site repair requests. It's also built to deal invisibly (from user perspective) with multiple sites (we support 9 schools from here) and could easily scale to an entire LEA. And before you get discouraged, the demo etc. is here: http://helpdesk.centralmanclc.com As it understands multiple sites, this will continue to be the demo server after it goes live (in 2 weeks), so the knowledge base will hopefully become very useful. On the bright side, it gets the technician to load Linux over W2K, which is a hell of an improvement... (assuming it's a recent version - 7.2 is pretty old like a 2.2 kernel I think). SSH is a very good way of remotely administering the box - have you tried this? I'm missing something here though - use MAC addresses for what? The upgrade problem is probably that the SuSE install will still be there and the new one is not in the path, or later in the path so is not being started. Have you tried stopping the squid service then running the newly installed one from its install directory? A suggestion: There is an international organisation called SchoolForge that aims to represent organisations, including companies, "...that advocate, use, and develop open resources for primary and secondary education.". The organisers recently suggested the creation local "chapters" for national use that could be more focussed on their individual country's needs, and sign up those that may not see affiliation to an international body as worthwhile. A SchoolForge UK seems an ideal, all-inclusive front for those in the UK working with (and on!) open source solutions in school, and could host the wiki, useful links, equivalence tables for UK Linux/MS school software, NC linked teaching resources, lesson plans, etc., etc. and simultaneously provides an excellent press focus for open source in education developments. Setup time could be minutes and an official press launch could be in time for the summer term. Comments? The Wiki should be part rather than the front; FAQs, PR and advertising material distilled from it and placed within public-facing parts of a site. The AFFS (and related organisations) would not be an appropriate front for this activity as their objectives would be perceived as overtly political, rather than interested in deriving the best benefits for children, schools and local communities. If we are to have a PR drive, the front should be non-political, school management and LEA oriented. Presenting the purist arguments up-front is likely to incur labelling as extremists and the rest of the excellent reasons for schools adopting OSS will be ignored. If individuals manage to arrange meetings with heads/chairs/education officers, then the philosophical reasons can be presented as part of that meeting; it is unlikely to be the deciding factor, but will become important to them in time - remember: softly softly catch'ee monkey... Sorry to lay this one on just before Easter but... We are trying to generate new UK case studies of schools/colleges that are using open source software. We have a case study template (borrowed from seul) which is quick and easy to fill in. We would take the information from you over the phone or via email and write it up into a case study which (upon final approval from you) would be included among the new ones. Whether it is one server which makes your life easier or a whole school desktop we would like to document your experiences. If you know of other schools please let us know and we will contact them too. Open Source Conference - a way forward

To start with a quick thank you to all that came and made the day such a success. Below are my 2p's worth. I like the idea of a local chapter of SchoolForge as I think it gives it a specific educational focus which being part of the AFFS organisation might be lacking. However, I'm not clear about what specific benefits that would provide us with. Fundamentally we would still have to build the site ourselves and then announce it to SchoolForge so that 'Open Source in UK Education Network' (OSIUKEN? (pronounced 'ossie-u-ken' - how's that for catchy ! ;o)) can be another of the organisations underneath the SchoolForge umbrella. Looking quickly through the list of existing members there are quite a number of UK institutions already there. As a complete aside do we see OSIUKEN (I'm getting the hang of this now :)) as a co-ordinating umbrella organisation for the UK scene with the idea of focussing the efforts of all those in the UK who are contributing together? Which brings me to point 2 - where to host it. Taking on the principle of 'just do it' (apologies to Nike) Larry Walker (Technical Manager, Saint Bede's School - Redhill) has set up a 'smartgroup' (http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/os.education) It has sharing facilities, file swapping, mailing list, FAQ area etc. In lieu of an alternative *at present* is this something people want to get involved in? It might not be the final resting place but it is a start. If you are interested you have to go to the URL, click on the join group button, then create an account using your e-mail address. I've made it publicly viewable and it does give a development environment for material. If there are other/better alternatives let me know. I have limited experience and I am happy to take advice but above anything else I want to *do something*! Michael Brown of Fen Systems has agreed for the OSIE info (http://www.fensystems.co.uk/osieweb/fs/main.html) to be used in the new site (whatever form that might take) and we can put parts of the conference CD on it too. Ideally the CD would be the kicking off point and more dynamic content can be added as we go along. So who's up for doing what?

Following the conference on Friday I was left with the distinct feeling that we are standing on the edge of a major breakthrough on the implementation of open source software in schools. The offer of this technology is computing that is: - low cost - sustainable - ubiquitious - customisable We need to make sure that the enthusiasm is focussed now, for though we are all convinced of the inevitability of open source solutions, the time scale is determined by those of us who are implementing it. In particular, if the first wave of schools adopting open source does not do so by September 2003, then we will be set back by a whole year. ipchains thro firewall

Like (many?) schools we have a number of machines with real IP addresses facing the outside world - for Mailserving, proxy server, PPTP remote access, etc. - including a linux box. These are physically located close to our ADSL router. These servers have two network cards - one facing the ADSL bits and one facing the rest of our internal network. I now have requirement to provide our security cameras recording box a real IP address for a box which is situated remotely in the school. I could, with some expense provide a new fibre cable all the way to it - at some expense. I had thought that maybe the security firm could use VPN access but they didn't seem to know anything about that - and I can't fiddle with their monitoring station. Can I use the LINUX box (using IPchains or equivalent) a route to provide access to their box - and if so how? Currently our internal network is 1.0.X.Y/16 and our external network is 217.204.233.1-15/240. (And don't start asking me why our internal network is non standard IP scheme - its to do with the fact that we still have some old Acorn stations that default to his address scheme and although they could reload a new network stack on boot up they are slow enough already). I suppose some kind of NAT scheme would allow their cameras to create an external link - but that would not alone allow the external monitoring station to create a link back to the cameras. Obviously those in the know, reading this, will be chuckling that this guy knows nothing (I know that already...in fact the little more I get to know the more I know I don't know!) but if you are able to offer any guidance I would be grateful. This developer is One of the issues with Kudos, as well as Veryan Workview and SpellStar, is a requirement to have directories/files which are read/write to everyone. Which is a poor software design for a multi-user system. Let alone that a proper multi-user system would not require the user to create their own user identity, since they already have one. I notice that the same people also offer something similar on their website. We think Kudos is going to work easy and have the agreement of Loughborough Uni that they will cooperate with our summer developer. This developer is going to take a list of apps currently used in schools (like this one - cheers Mark!) and look at free ways of making them work under Linux - we're assuming a combination of WINE and porting, depending on the app, and contribute code and how-tos into the WINE project. Have just had a look at edu.kde.org, and some of the programs are very cool. Put one of our maths teachers who teaches Omnigraph in front of KPlot, and they thought it was nice, but the interpretation of some of the maths was a bit odd (although beyond me, so dunno :) ). Not really :( Almost all of our CD-ROM based materials are developed using Macromedia Director, and they still do not support Unix/X11. There are historical reasons as to why we use Director, based on the types of software we were developing 5 years ago.. However, I have had success running Multimedia Science School under WINE, and in some areas even noticed a performance increase as a result! I'd like to support a version of it for Linux, and so I might look into that again. iptables equiv. of ipchains -M -L

I used to use ipchains and i could type ipchains -M -L and get a list of outgoing connections through the NAT. Does anybody know if there is an equivalent command with iptables as I'm now using iptables and I'd still like to be able to display this info. Thanks, Alex Brett alex.brett(a)brettcomputers.co.uk

Hi there! Me again! We're looking at using PXE to boot SOME clients, so they can connect to Terminal Services. Has anyone has any experience, Linux or Win-based!? Apparently Red-hat can do it? Basically, all I planned first was: - Client boots up, gets IP from DHCP - Client finds remoteboot server (I'm not sure how!!) - Client grabs image from remoteboot server (TFTP, isn't it?) - Client boots into Windows 3.11 - Win3.11 shell is the Terminal Services client software.
