For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. School admin: Microsoft only?

I've been having all sorts of trouble with the attitude of people at our LEA. First was that for PLASC returns they have decided to use RM Securenet which requires MSIE and associated junk. They got upset when I told them "sorry, we don't support that software". Then we have the situation of the latest replacement for the SIMS STAR module "superSTAR". For which Capita have decided to base around Microsoft .NET. (Assuming they don't change their mind yet again.) They recommend workstations with Windows XP, P4/AMD Athlon XP, 1/2G memory, 10G free hard disk, 17" monitor. To meet the kind of specs which the LEA are giving to us would mean spending up to 20 thousand pounds for little, if any, improvement. My overall feeling is that various people have completly lost the plot and really don't understand that the priorities for schools are other than having the latest and greatest toys to play with. Let alone that this spec is completly overblown for a machine to lookup data on database. Sometimes also to do some wordprocessing, email and web browsing. The only way of using something else would be if we could also persuade the majority of secondary schools in Devon to drop SIMS. IMHO, SIMS is not so much a bad system, FMS is horribly useful, and we totally rely on it. I just wish they didnt tie themslevels down to Microsoft Products. "superSTAR" (as claimed below) is Microsoft .NET, FMS is some wierd SQL implementation, Most of our SIMS is wierd old DBASE files, and frankly its an utter mess. Yes, I'd like to see Capita driven to allow other programs to patch on to its databasing, etc. I'd also like to see Capita Compitable Alternatives. OK Guys, Heres the crunch - SIMS have 90-95% of market share and will only support Microsoft and are dictating software policy to schools. Sounds like an antitrust case to me - how about we petition / complain to our MP's and request that the OFT look into a possible abuse of 'power' here? I'm up for a fight if anyone want's to join me...... Alan BTW: Secure IE? don't make me laugh - IE's secure layer is vulerable to 'man in the middle' attacks - it's been in most computer newspapers etc.

Probably not at present unless it was tried and tested. At present the ICT team at county are testing the water to see how many schools are interested in moving to CMIS as it would affect their support and the funds they obtain for that role. Their overall timescale is around 3 years. If something came along which was better and more stable than both SIMS and CMIS I am sure they would look into it but there would have to be interest in schools around the county. Bit of a Slapper!

I suspect that lots of you have already heard about this new 'Slapper' virus that busily turning our Linux / Apache machines into some kind of evil beowulf. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2263693.stm) This idea of 'grid computing' seems to be gaining ground quite rapidly though. I have read a few articles on it and now find myself with a few P166's and an old hub to play with. The idea of building a beowulf has appealed for quite a while. What appeals even more, is getting 166's to use some kind of 'slapper' style integration with the main network and harness all the idle cycles on the under-used new gigahertz, now entry level, machines that occupy corners in the school. Anyone tried this yet? Does this idea make sense? It should be practical, I would have thought. I will keep people posted, if I get it to work. Maybe some people know of a few pitfalls though, before I start. Regards to all, Bruce Miller.

Squid Logging Software

Does anyone know any good log-interpretation software for Squid Logs, we're using Ident lookups to get usernames, and purely want to be able to see what sites are visitied by each person, even just a simple CGI script with text boxes to filter the logs would be useful! Dug Stokes

Remote support utilities

Hi Has anyone found an enterprise oriented remote support utility? I'm looking for something that can poll a given subnet and return a list of the available clients. The idea behind the requirement is to be able to provide remote support on very minimal information, and potentially relatively minimal (generic IT) skills on the behalf of the operator. There is a DOS 3com utility which reprograms the card (e.g i/o, interrupt, etc, depending on the card type) and enables/disables the bootrom. It's part of the 3com driver kit for the 3c509 - I don't think it's available separately. Last time I looked, the kit was in .exe format :-( - although the .exe simple unpacks to a set of folders when run. Setting up Boot roms

This may be a very stupid question, Some months ago I purchased some bootroms from disklessworkstations.com for a 3c905b card. The accompanying documentation says I need to download floppyload.bin & 3x90x.bin from ltsp.org create a boot disk which will reprogram the card to accept the boot rom. 286's as X-terms

Hi, There is some discussion of turning 286's into psuedo-xterms (using VNC run on top of Nano-X) on Elks and Nano-X mailing lists. Elks networking at present is SLIP, but expect to go ethernet at some point. My question is whether there is a 'mass market' for this? Do schools have a large supply of 286 (or even 386) machines sitting in cupboards that could usefully be used as X terminals?? I expect that this sort of project may be more suited to the third world where the latest hardware is just too expensive. Simon Wood.

Folks, What's the *simplest* (unexperienced!) way of taking a complete image of a SuSE 7.2 installation incase of disaster hard drive melt down? There's one drive in the machine (partitioned to default SuSE install settings). I've had a few hard rives die recently, none on important machines, but you never know. I obviously backup data daily on production machines, but it would be much easier in case of hard disk failure, to have an exact *easy* image ;) I imagine we could be up and running again in thirty minutes with such a solution? Can anyone suggest a "free" webmail system to use in conjunction with our email server (qmail running pop3, smtp and imap services). We have been using Horde (plenty of features) but the logs are reporting crashes which the Horde FAQ is putting down to bugs in PHP. Something written in Perl perhaps? Thanks Richard Naylor

restore KDE defaults

Hi all I just upgraded my suse 7.3 to 8.0. Whe nI first logged in kde asked if I wanted to copy my settings or start again. I wrongly chose copy current settings, now I want to start again with kde 3 settings. Is there an easy way to do this Cheers Matt

tar... Quite literally, log in as root; <cd />; <tar -cf backup.tar *>. Then copy the resulting file to a network drive. In the event of emergency, do basic installation to new hard drive, copy tar back and restore it. 30 minutes is probably achievable, depending on speed of machine and size of installation. Or... Try Partition Image: http://www.partimage.org - looks pretty close to fully functional, particularly for your purposes, and it would be nice to have someone (else?) on the list with practical experience...
