For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. I may be trying to teach Granny to suck eggs here but you cannot flout the rules. Subnet masks must always be a series of 1's then 0's. You cannot mix and match. The mask is used to separate the host and network portions ie the last non-zero octet must always be one of 192, 224, 240, 248 or 252 (254 is allowed in Class A in the second or third octet or Class B in the third octet but not in either case the fourth octet). 128 is also not allowed to be the next octet from the standard netmask for each class in subnetting. All the following netmasks allow no hosts Class A netmasks 255.255.255.254 or 255.128.0.0.0 Class B netmasks 255.255.255.254 or 255.255.128.0 Class C netmasks 255.255.255.254 or 255.255.255.128 The netmask 255.255.255.255 is used to signify this host on this network. Class A networks 1.0.0.0 to 126.0.0.0, may have netmasks from 255.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.252 (Network 127.0.0.0 being special. Note it has 2 to the power 24 minus 2 hosts! What a waste.) Class B networks 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.0.0, may have netmasks 255.255.0.0 to 255.255.255.252 Class C networks 192.0.0.0 to 239.255.255.0, may have netmasks 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.255.252 (in the three Classes above, note the exclusion of the 128 subnet mask) You cannot use a range of netmasks on a LAN. You can use multiple netmasks if each netmask is used on its own LAN separated by a router or routers or switches using VLANs. On top of all this you cannot use the first and last host in any network or subnet as these are the wire and broadcast addresses. Private networks Class A 10.x.x.x, Class B 172.31.x.x or Class C 192.168.x.x NT does not care because it is probably using NetBIOS and WINS and not TCP/IP and DNS Pinging the network card in the host will always work, if the drivers are set up correctly and the card works, because the host knows its MAC address and does not require to do an ARP request. In your situation I believe the ARP requests are malfunctioning due to a bad netmask. Therefore no ping to hosts on the LAN with the malformed netmask. When bits are given back in a netmask rather than being borrowed to create subnets, it is called supernetting. Routers have to be specially configured to allow this to work. Cisco routers can use the bottom network in any range of subnets but they have to have this feature turned on (ie you can also use 128 in the next octet in the standard netmask for each class or 254 in the fourth octet but it is a waste of IP address ranges). Legacy routers will throw a wobbly if you use the first subnet in any range of subnets, routing would not work. This can be a bit of a minefield but our Cisco students do get it in the end. Hello all, Where as I think that it is noble that Gresham College is making transcripts of their lectures available gratis. It is somewhat disappointing that the CD claims that it needs Windows (95, 98, NT, 2000 or XP) to run, given that this is a non-Windows forum. Hopefully this requirement is only for 'extras' and the actual transcripts are in a simple/open format so that future accessibility is guaranteed. Simon Wood

Is it in house ( By whom ) Contracted ( To whom ) Cost? Does your LEA offer a service? Does anyone know how to test systems with soft power buttons? Any recommendations on KIT? Ta Robin

wow what a lot of information to read! thanks for all your help guys :) I am but an HND graduate with nearly a winter to summers worth of experience, with much much more to learn yet.. Now regarding that "subnet range" thing, they have it written down as "Subnet Mask 255.255.25**.0 **= Range from 2-5". I think its probably meant to interpreted as a choice of masks for the network i.e different schools have different network configurations, and make have 254 type of subnet on their internal network, and would probably use 252 on their external side of things. Either way, i'd like to add at this point that our provider probably isn't the best when it comes to technical knowledge - their support is lousy, communication is poor, and any contacts we do have in the organisation with some common sense are usually elsewhere trying to keep the ship together. Infact lately they setup a Netsweeper 2.0 trial which is supposed to be some really advanced content filtering, which does work to some degree, but when we have any trouble with it theres no support on it, neither is there any kind of channels to relay feedback on the testing... *sigh* at least they're free for this year! I would still avoid using 255.255.254.0 as a netmask for a class C network. The default network mask is 255.255.255.0 then you can subnet from there borrowing bits from the fourth octet. Supernetting does not work well. The alternative is to use the 172.31.0.0 network with netmask 255.255.0.0 instead of the Class C one you are using. The 252 subnetting causes hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end, but I'll check those later... Next questions: are we to assume you run single subnet internally? Are these test hosts live on the networks? Printer management questions.

Hello, We've got a room of 30 Windows NT4 PCs printing to a SuSE 7.3 PC(P4 1.6GHz,128MB RAM) via SAMBA. We are using CUPS as the Linux printing system. The printer we use is a LaserJet6L with 2MB memory. The 6L's drivers are copied from the SAMBA server when the printer is installed on the client. The raw data is then sent to the printer. Anyway, this all works fine. Problems occur when the queue becomes overloaded. Work doesn't come out straight away so they send it again..so on and so on. Obviously part of this is a user management issue, explaining that printing is not instant when X people are trying to print at once. Does anyone have experience of a system that can restrain their desire to hit the print button whenever they get bored? I have looked at some Windows based print quota software but have been unable to locate much for those with Linux printers. Any ideas? Thank you Joe Garfoot

11111111.11111111.11111111.0 =255 (or 24 bits) 11111111.11111111.11111101.0 =253 - this is not valid because it will exclude alternate addresses seemingly (in decimal) part of the same subnet. 252 (22 bits) is legitimate, just nasty to get your head round (and strictly speaking, 192.168 is a class C and should only be custom subnetted after the 24th bit). Is the 10. network provided to you as a .253 subnet? NT wouldn't object as it doesn't really "understand" networking (like, I'm afraid to say, Microsoft). Try taking out the network card on the external network and seeing if you can establish connection to the rest of the internal network first. How is the router setup? Some showstopping network issues..

Ok, so this is my first venture into Linux, and a pretty good experience it has been - until now! My initial intention was to setup a proxy that could block file downloads, control access room by room, have timed rules etc and Squid fit the bill for free ;) Anyway i have now managed to achieve this on a borrowed celeron 400 workstation with 256mb ram and a paltry 4GB hard drive, hooked into a hub with two network cards - one configured to chat to the internet router and the other on the local network. Installation of SuSe went without a hitch, and most of my time was spent figuring out how to configure Squid, and this beast has been serving the net out to over 200 stations for two weeks. Now i'm assimilating the original NT based proxy with a SCSI setup and P3-550 into a linux box, and i've had nothing but problems with getting the network cards to work! on the test box these were two generic accton 100MB types, whilst on the other they are one Intel Pro, and an integrated Intel wake-on-lan type of which has no way to disable it in the bios, nor as a jumper on the mobo which is a dual 440BX btw. I have managed to get them to a point where Ifstatus sees em and verifys them as 'up' and with appropriate ip addresses etc. BUT even tho the light on the card displays it is connected at 100mbits and there is the background activity of the network on the card, it will not ping any other ip address be it on the local network, nor the external side!?! I'm pretty much baffled by this seeing as it is using the same cables and sockets pre-linux testing, and i've tried removing the test box from the network to see if that will do the trick but it doesn't.. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In theory you may only sell on CALs that have not been used (i.e. not opened) However, how one goes about proving the status of licences if the servers have been scrapped is anyone's guess. CALs appear to be transferrable from server to server within a network, or within a single organisation. Not much help, but there again it _is_ MS. Serial Ports and Data Logging

Hi, Thanks to those people who responded about my previous query - proved useful. However the next problem I have is trying to get my system to communicate with the data logging equipment on the serial port. I know the equipment works, however the software is having no joy communicating with it. How do you enable/configure the serial ports? size of cups process

Hi Can anybody tell me if I should be alarmed by the *growth* of my cups process. It currently stands at 68meg (approx 20% of total *real* memory). Is this a *cache* of completed jobs (if so, can I purge them?) or is there another reason? I've tried restarting cups and the initial size is approx 23m but quickly returns to its previous size. Any ideas? The server uses suse 7.3, samba 2.2.1a and cups 1.1.10 serving 35 win stations. On a different note, what's the simplest way to periodically check that a file has been changed and if it has to send an email to a user? Hi (This message is part of a long running saga - "Dave displays his ignorance") I'm setting up an Intranet server based in Suse 8.0. I've not installed X windows. I want to change the boot options eg run Apache. I'm trying to add entries in /etc/init.d/rc3.d using ln -s /etc/init.d/rc3.d/S30apache -> ../apache but all I get is error messages. Should I have a file called S30apache before I link it? I've managed to do this before and I think I'm doing something silly ..... but what? Dave I

Data Logging Software

Hi, I'm currently in the initial stages of putting forward a proposal to our science department to move to Linux (using LTSP to use lower spec client machines). However the only stumbling block I have is with the data logging software they use, Insight v3. Are there any decent datalogging packages out there (there's bound to be) that anybody is using. I think the equipment they are using is from Phillip Harris and plugs in through a standard serial port. Also when we're using LTSP will the local machine COM ports still be accessible even though the software is running elsewhere? (Forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question!) Thanks in advance. As Roger has said, you cannot *do it* in YASt, but you can take what yast has done so far and modify it to get your old startup behaviour. Let us assume that you have set up the primary address for your card. Briefly, you need to investigate the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network. In there you will find ascii files relating to the card you have set up one address for using YaST (probably called ifcfg-eth0. This will contain lines like: IPADDR=10.0.0.104 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 BROADCAST=10.0.0.255 NETWORK=10.0.0.0 STARTMODE=onboot Look in the file ifcfg.template, where you will se the following advice ... # Multiple addresses (aka aliases) # There are several ways to assign more than one IP address to a network # interface. If you ever want to use YaST2 for this you should choose the # first possibility: # 1) one IP address per config file: # create multiple copies of your master config files and add ':<string>' to # the filenames of the copy. Prefer increasing number starting at 1. # 2) multiple IP addresses per config file: # You can extend the variable name 'IPADDR' by any string you like (IPADDR_1, That advice is slightly expanded in the man page for ifup. (I haven't continued the second section, as the first is what you need.) So all you do is copy your ifcfg-eth0 file to ifcfg-eth0:1 etc and then change the internal data to match your alias requirements. Happy hunting. Running 3 servers on Duron desktops without issue (7.2 & 7.3) - running 8 on an over-clocked K6-2 desktop at home. Below is the macro and a description (bit before tab = macro, bit after tab = description, <cr> = enter key) qq record macro 'q' /^$<cr> search for next blank line dd delete it q end recording macro 999@q replay macro 'q' 999 times. remote connection to SUSE 8.0

OK - I give up (again) Every time I get a new version of SUSE they move/change default files and I get lost. I can't telnet or start an Xsession from a client (PC runing Xserver). I clicked the bit in YAST(2) to enable remote X sessions but both cygwin and our Acorn Xserver fail to get past the mottled grey blank X screen. (In fact the Acorn server fails complaining about not finding the system font - but I suspect that might be misleading) I can't telnet either - and I looked at hosts.allow and uncommented the line in.telnetd which I thought should have allowed all remote hosts....but the message on the telnet client is that the connection was closed by the remote. Unless I missed it....I did not see an 'Install almost everything' button on the yast install...a feature which I rather liked on 7.4 On the good side... I have almost got winbind working. I found the swat/help/winbind file helpful and all the basic tests work. I have now got lost with trying to understand pam modules, their syntax, and how and which I need to modify. For the first time I had colour on my bttv TV card - until I selected a tuner and now I can't get the wizard to tune any stations regardless of which tuner I select (all give a detuned image when manually selecting the correct channel number). -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School
