I will come up with a charter tonight and try to include all of those things that we have discussed. I will submit the draft tomorrow morning sometime and we can take a vote on it and if people have questions please ask. I don't mind criticism. My motto: "To avoid criticism: Say nothing, do nothing, be nothing." This is not a "Manifesto." However, we have to have some sort rules for moderation. Lets roll!!!! Lance

The reason I joined.

I think that before we decide on a charter that we should discuss: 1. Our reason for joining. 2. What do we do in education? 3. What do we want out of this list? 4. More importantly, how can we help our students get a good education using linux? School is about kids and educating them better is our main goal. 1. My reason for joining. I am a social studies teacher on the Navajo Reservation. Each classroom has a least one computer. Our labs have about a total of 30 computers for about 700 kids. (We currently are on a Novell server and Windows) I joined because I am looking for a better way to help educate my kids and to help my life a bit easier. If you are a teacher, you know that it is a 7-day a week job. I am interested in: 1. Programming (Hobbiest) 2. Discussing matters that address such topics as the "digital divide." 3. Getting ideas, and giving ideas that will help developers better serve the educational community. (We need all the help we can get). 4. How can I improve to better suit the needs of my students? 5. Applications that are cost efficient and helpful in the classroom? I am a Linux "newbie" and I am running SuSe 7.3 (I have 8.0 on order). One day I would like to develop a Linux package directed at just educators and students. Lance Lane

Or all? They all sound fine and interesting to me. As I said earlier, the "hooking up servers" part is probably better done on the lists we already have for that sort of thing. Things like curriculum development can't reasonably be discussed on suse-linux-e because 1) the list is just too big. Nobody really wants to receive 200 emails per day about patching kernels and controlling their coffee pots with Linux when they're really interested in topic like curriculum development. 2) It will take more than a bunch of geeks with tables of benchmark statistics and uptime figures to get Linux into schools. If we start doing support here pretty soon we won't have any non-technical people left. I think it would be great if there were high school principles and teachers and other non-technical people from academia subscribed and contributing...you know, exactly what you don't find on suse-linux-e. I don't think the support needs of a typical school can't be handled by the general lists. -- -ckm

I have some ideas on most of this stuff, but I don't really have anyone here to bounce them off of. I would like to be able to use this list for that. Thanks! However, I think we should take a vote on a very important issue as an educator: Educators like to exchange ideas. So shouldn't we make this a LANGUAGE specific list instead of Country specific. EX: suse-schools-english(a)suse.com Other intrested people that speak different languages can follow suit. EX: suse-schools-spanish(a)suse.com Because: 1. We can certainly exchange information and ideas with teachers from GB, Australia and other English speaking countries. 2. We need to format the group to fit the exchange of ideas as educators. If people start debating the merits of various filesystems and vm implementations the non-technical people will get bored and unsubscribe. If suppport-type questions get posted they definitely won't be answered with the speed they would be on suse-linux-e. Also, I don't think it should nec. be specific to SuSE. If your school will only accept Redhat because that's "Linux" in their minds that's understandable given their marketing (of course we'd appreciate you trying to convince them otherwise :)) but it seems that the 'schools' part of the name should take precedence over the 'suse' part; we didn't create the list as a cheap marketing ploy. You still need to understand what DNS is trying to achieve, though. Bind does not like to be swapped out of RAM at all (see the documentation which accompanies the package in /usr/share/doc/packages/bindX, where X is the version of bind you choose to use). If you are installing it on a busy mutli-funstion server, you may need to write a little script to ensure that bind is kept near the top of the busy list!!! The opportunistic lock break failure message you're receiving indicates that Samba is not relinquishing a resource it *should* have finished with. Netlogon is the most likely of these, but there may be others. Try changing the debug level assigned to samba - for instance, by doctoring the /etc/init.d/smb script and then restart smaba and try a few logins, while running tail -f /var/log/log.smb on an available terminal screen. samba

I setup a samba box this week. Works really well as a PDC but all clients pause when browsing the network neighbourhood - they seem to wait for something for about 20 seconds, then resume as normal. Log ons are fine, but log offs seem to pause for the same length (no, there's no sound file playing). Very odd. The network and hardware is all good, as we replaced SuSE 6.4 with Samba configured as PDC but with SHARE level security, with RedHat 7.2 with samba configured with USER level. Print to win 98 server

People are always writing about printing from windows but my problem is the opposite. I just installed suse 7.2 pro on a couple of dell optiplex150 at my daughters school. The classrooms each have their own router for net/lan. One of the win 98 machines has a printer which all other machines in the class print to. question 1) What do I need to do to have the linux box print to the Win 98 machine. (I have no networking experience) (yet ;-) Question 2) This will probably make question 1 mute. I believe the printer that the server uses is a gdi printer (lexmark z12 if I remember) Can I print to this since Windows is acting as the server or do I need a "real" printer. This is a 4th/5th grade classroom, the kids ask "Why would I want to use linux. I'm going to have a hard time answering that satisfactorilly if they can't print out their work. -- dh

new and exciting samba errors in log

Folks, In another school I installed samba as a PDC last week (not the same school with DNS issues!). This other samba box was suddenly being _really_ slow (7 - 10 mins for a logon), so I went to investigate (15 miles away). The log had apparently 'filled up', so it was spewing errors to the console. Primary worry: Anyone know what "Request_oplock_break: failed no response" means? It was flashing up continually. I restarted smb, and the problem was instantly solved - its back up to speed now - but I need stability, and need to feel secure that it won't happen again. Secondary worry: Even though performance is now great, and all seems well at the user end, it now says "PAM: system validation failed - user rejected" and "could not find desktop service" many many times, when a user logs on. It logs the user on instantly, so are those messages normal? It appears to have always said this, looking through the logs. Any ideas much appreciated. Anyone had this before? Page the Oracle

Hi all: I am currently at Bournemouth and Poole college undertaking Cisco indoctrination but have come across (as you do) and interesting Linux problem. They are trying to run Oracle for their students to practice real sql but it is not working. They have followed al the how-tos and the installation was fine. They have followed suggestions about setting variables but when they run sqlplus they get the message that "libclsntsh.so.8.o" is not available. I did a search for it and it does not exist in the system. Any suggestions? I am busy with 3 exams a day and when I tried to install Oracle at home I was told that 256MB RAM was not enough. proxy servers and banned lists

While we are on the subject of proxies: What sort of size do the banned list have to be before the significantly slow squid on a 800Meg machine with 256M of RAM? I've found all sorts of banned lists on the web I could use but they run to thousands of items. James Carter South Lee School

If you have physical access you have the ability to view the contents of the drive, or even change it if you want. You do not need the root password. Thanks very much for the help (hopefully you read the thanks posted to the group)(it was the hdds that were shorting or smoking) Yesterday I attached a hard drive (just a 2 gig spare from school - fan and power came on and it recognised hard drive but then came up 'CMOS Checksum error DEFAULTS LOADED' and then would not go on any further - I cant even get into setup I had cleared the CMOS as recommended earlier (Mboard manual said to move a pin and then replace which I did) I am stuck now - I haven,t a clue what the CMOS is and what I should do next - if you can help that would be great but I certainly will understand if that isnt possible Yours Ronald -- David J Nelson <dnelson444(a)tiscali.co.uk> wrote: > Hi > Check the jumper to clear CMOS. RM proxy server query

RM now sell a proxy server solution that uses proxy .. caching but not filtering.. unless you pay extra. They don't even give you the root password so you can install extra stuff yourself. I was just curious in what way this reflected the license of the GPL software they are selling.. does witholding access to your ability to modify the program count as any sort of infringement? Thanks Phillip Hands, Ian Birdsey, Ian Lynch, David Nelson, David Woolard etc. the advice was very helpful and greatly appreciated in the end I did practically the whole lot recommended. PSU did need replacing cleared CMOS and reseated processor, cpu worked in other PC etc finally convinced mboard gone got new one ECS mboard(poor board poor layout) still didnt work then thought front case switches (wires everywhere made me look clever?) then graphics card - finally day and half later pinned it down to one hdd making system not come on (presumably shorted) and then got smoke coming from 2nd hdd (ho ho) so next step will be new hdd and hope the rest works Thanks for all the help - I enjoyed figuring it out (cept for the cost) I now know heaps more (may not amount to much!) power surge-PC not working

Dear anyone We had an electrician in today to do kitchen stuff (well it is the holidays and we have been saving)( for ages) so electricity has been on and off most of the day (do u know where this is heading I wonder). I noticed when the electrics where turned back on my computer came on (had surge plug connected last week) so clever me I switched off the supply to my computer (obviously after shutting it down would I be so stupid as to not do that?) Well actually yes I would be and am fairly stupid as I did not bother to turn off the supply to my sons computer (we are not rich built both they are good but cheap)(didnt fit a surge plug last week I mean why would you?) Well actually my sons PC was good but is not so good now it wont start up nothing Ive put in a new psu (atx) and still no joy when I turn on the supply to the computer nothing seems to work although the cpu fan - a couple of times has made a very small movement one cd drive light comes on and then goes out as do the diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard but nothing else at all I get no power to any drives nothing works it seems to cut or short out in some way Any suggestions as to how many new bits to get or what to do its a K7T Pro (MS-6330) ATX VA mainboard with a 400 Duron. Linux Based WYSIWYG HTML editor?

I am looking for a WYSIWYG html editor to maintain our schools website, we are currently using windows and Dreamweaver, but I would like to start using LTSP and need to find a simple web page editor, we don`t use a fraction of the features in Dreamweaver most of the time so I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations? Kernel bogey

Hi all: I have recently up-graded my "old" machine and installed a new HD while leaving the "old" drive temporarily as a slave. The "old" drive I had been using fro about 3 years and had therefore up-graded from 6.0 to 7.3 in stages. As such, on my desktop I had HD icons for the various Win partitions on the drive in the machine, including one for the NT partition. On clicking these icons, all would merrily boot up so I could shuffle material from partition to partition. These were on a second drive in the machine. On the new machine I have a large drive with 2000 in the beginning and SuSE 7.3 on the rest. When the machine booted up there was no icon for 2000 as there was before and when I added it, it would not boot, despite having the same fstab entry as before. IN 7.1 or 7.2 (KDE 2.1), there was an option to configure the kernel and add ntfs support but I can't find it in this version. I have also rtfm about configuring the kernel and followed the instructions (p. 232 of the reference manual) about running make config at /usr/src/linux, but that does not exist. Any suggestions about how I can get to the kernel and make ntfs support happen or what I am doing wrong? Paul
