Caching is a way of temporarily storing pages that are regularly viewed, by checking the modification times of the stored pages with the originals to see if the copy needs updating. Eventually, cached versions time out. Once set up this is an automatic process, but pages are only placed in the cache if someone actually looks at them (and only single pages are stored, not whole sites ... unless someone looks at every page on a site). Mirroring is when you 'snapshot' a whole site, in order to obtain a local copy of that site, which people can use without connecting to the Internet at all. This is usually a person-driven activity - ie the admin performs a mirror from time to time of the sites in question. People have already responded about caching (squid and apache can run as a caching proxy server). Mirroring would typically involve things like wget, or even lynx ... Kevin.

Intranet

Hello all I'm trying to set up an Intranet. I've got Apache running on a server and it delivers html pages to the clients with no apparent problems. However, the long term aim was to use it to deliver Internet content which might otherwise be unavailable/slow. 1) Is it legitimate to "cache" pages from websites locally on an Intranet server? 2) Can anyone recommend software which will capture said pages. 3) Will the software enable all content to be captured ie including interactive quiz type pages. I already use the excellent WebGet (Risc OS) by Joseph Heenan but that does not seem to capture all types of content. Thanks Dave Williams

Scrubbing hard drives clean

Fdisk doesn't scrub unfortunately. Anyone with technical knowhow can still see the files. Ditto when files are deleted, ditto when a hard drive is reformatted (sometimes). You need a program which will wipe free space. Do the machines have Windows on them or linux? Lots of stuff for windows. DPT SCSI Card

A year and a half ago we built one of our old RM FX servers as a Linux server using Suse 6.3 and running squid. It's been sitting in the corner doing its job without a problem and we are very happy with it. We would like to do the same at our sister school who have the a virtually identical server, however I can't remember how we managed to get our DPT 2024 SCSI card to be recognised. Searching the SuSE hardware database doesn't seem to help - can someone point me in the right direction? I'm guessing other RM sites will have done the same thing, and obviously we did but I just can't remember what we did - and going into YaST doesn't seem to tell me what we did either! Squid Logfiles <> NT User names

I have Squid running on Linux at work, but am also testing it on NT at home... Emailing school newsletters

Dear All, Like every other school we get through a lot of trees sending newsletters home to parents. Of course, most don't get home but end up as a layer of compost in the bottom of desks, etc. What I would like to do is to be able to give parents the option of receiving newsletters via email. Sendmail nearly there but...

Thanks Gary Ive been using sendmail to mail a user with an account on my SMTP server. The user does not have a password on my LINUX box, mail to users on the same host works ok. Should i need aliuses for all users or passwords for all users on my LINUX box, i hope not. Do i need to customise my sendmail.cf file more?Should i use my ISPs DNS domain in my sendmail.cw file? Does this smarthost line still sound possible? The DNS server is working better now i took the server host name of the MX record (NT Optional field) and points to the ISP's DNS with the relevent MX config. Getting there but so near but so far! Sendmail and DNS

Thanks for your prompt reply! I have my domain entry in my sendmail.cw file however, and i havent even started testing the cgi script at the moment, im just testing sendmail. If i email (form the root user) an internal address, the address comes up with the message "user not known". Sendmail to an external address will search through the domains DNS servers and then sais "Defered:Network unreachable". Interestingly (or maybe uninterestingly!) an nslookup on my domins mx record just brings up my pdc ip address, if i lookup my pdc.domainname i get all the mx record info. Lookups on remote DNS including my ISP's all seem ok. Before my bash prompt i have "root@LinuxSrv" should this be "root@domain name" to work. I suspect my DNS config or my sendmail config now. Sorry to go on but i need this sorted! The idea behind it all is to use "Hot Potatoes" a free (to Schools, check it out! www.halfbakedsoftware.com ) windows package that can produce interactive media web forms and can email results to the teacher. Hi i am a newcomer,althogh i have been listening in for a while now. I want to run the formmail cgi script on my apache server so i can email on an intranet page. I need sendmail to send the emails to my smtp server (IMAIL6). I have set up a Linux APACHE server that seems to be working fine as an internal web server, samba seems to be ok, but.... When i test my sendmail cf file all i seem to be able to email is users on my computer. /usr/sbin/sendmail -v -oQ/tmp -Ctest.cf recipient < /dev/null it cannot find users on my domain or externaly. Cygwin/XFree86

As you may or may not know, XFree86 has been successfully ported to MS Windows. You can get all the necessary bits to set it up yourselves from http://xfree86.cygwin.com/. Cygwin/XFree86 represents a nice and easy way to start experimenting with Linux thin-client setups, without having to mess around with boot ROMs and all the other minor hassles of approaches such as LTSP. It's really only suitable for *experimenting*, because it is nowhere near as fast as 'native' XF86. I have put together a single Zip file containing all the bits needed to start XF86 on Windows and use it to run applications on a remote Linux/BSD server (a la thin-client). This is significantly smaller than the amount you will end up downloading if you follow the instructions on Cygwin's web site. I have also added a couple of features such as autodetection of the screen size and colour depth (which are missing from the 'raw' release), and some extra diagnostic code. If anyone would be interested in testing this, please let me know and I'll e-mail it to you. If there's enough demand, I'll put it on the web. It should currently be considered as "alpha" quality (i.e. it works for me and it should work elsewhere, but I haven't tested it on a wide variety of machines yet). Note: you will need a working Linux application server on the network, set up to answer to XDMCP broadcast requests. An out-of-the-box Linux Mandrake setup will do this - I expect that other distributions will as well. Michael Brown http://www.fensystems.co.uk/
