Please excuse my ignorance but I am coming from an entirely Windows NT background - we have discussed some of the issues of using Linux etc as an alternative, and we have now got as far as actually installing a copy - but what is SQUID ?????

Hi, I am another new user who has been keeping quiet since joining the list last week. I have never used Linux before, but wanted experience with some other operating systems... Once I am familiar with the basics of Linux I would like to dive in and use it on some of the machines in our school, in particular using Squid as a proxy server. Hi All, Just thought I'd provide a little background about ourselves and use of Linux. We're a secondary comprehensive based in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear and started using Linux towards the end of last year. We've currently three machines, providing network services, with Linux up and running on. One of the machines is also used as a proxy server (running Squid) and firewall (using IPChains). All run Samba and two of them are used instead of NT servers, on the grounds of cost and need. I am interested to see how schools are using Linux, and any good/bad experiences. Help with Squid please, I am able to access the Squid2 proxy across the my network (and locally) but I can not get Squid to access the outside world - I get a message from Squid saying that the URL can not be found. I am using a modem to access Freeserve - This works fine locally by giving Netscape the IP address and port of Freeserve. I do not understand how to make Squid see the modem as a port and/or Freeserve's IP address/port. It appears that all the documentation that I have found addresses every issue bar this. Also, Assuming that I can get this to work, is it possible to get the modem to auto-dial on demand (and drop out) or else be accessed over the net? I am using kppp at present. Adrian Wells
