RFC - UK Schools Howto

Hi, This is a "request for content" - not a "request for comments" particularly ;-) Recent threads on this and other (OSE) discussions got me thinking about my proposed UK Schools Howto document again. I have updated our project pages to include a template document (sections only - no real content at the moment) that could be filled in : http://www.northants.lug.org.uk/projects/schools/ I am now after any suggestions for or comments on the document (or better yet, some submissions of content ...) As I see it, what would be useful, is a document of principles, not details. The documentation for details is very comprehensive (LDP, Howtos, Man pages), but generally there is just too much information available, in order to find what we need for a specific application. I am hoping that based on the combined experiences represented here, we could in essence, provide a document that 'filters out' the required details from the existing documentation. I would thus like the document to include a list of sample applications from education, with guidelines on the sorts of things that typically would be required to be setup. For example, could some of the details from the recent thread on squid as a web proxy be distilled down, so that someone picking up the document could see that for proxy services, squid is the way to go, with a few key configuration principles listed ... (use with external proxies, local configurations, etc) What is the general thoughts here : - This is a waste of time - The focus is all wrong - The information is already all there - Thats exactly the type of document I need - 'xyz' would be better ... - Sounds like a pain to maintain ;-) - etc If anyone has any ideas, or better yet, feels like writing a small paragraph or two on an application area (plain ascii text is fine) - then please get in touch : ukschools(a)northants.lug.org.uk Eventually, if this is a worthwhile thing to do, I guess I will fill it out myself, but it would be much better with details coming straight from the people who are actually using it successfully at the moment in education (I do use it successfully by the way, but just not in schools ;-) Thanks, Kevin. Scanners and Suse 6.4

Hi everybody, Has anyone had any succes with either :- 1. Parallel Port Based Scanners on Linux (Primax Colorado Direct 9600) 2. Umax Astra 2000P SCSI Scanner with Advansys Fast SCSI Card (3295) Misco Part no's CJ60471 + CJ60227 I'm trying to verify that they work before purchase! If anybody is using a scanner with Suse / GIMP etc could you pass on the type of scanner and scsi card that you are using? Squid and site filtering

We don't really have a blocking/filtering policy as such. We use RM's IFL service which is heavily filtered by them under their own filtering policy. We do however ask students to sign an Acceptable Usage Policy, this basically says that the internet is to be used for educational purposes and that sites that are visited are ones that you would be happy to show a teacher/parent. We block a few sites locally here. Such as http://java4fun.com which is not filtered by RM, but students playing online Java games all day does nothing for the speed of our internet connection or their education ! Squid

Hi I have just set about getting Squid to filter websites (thanks to Chris Dawkins for his e-mail) . I have it filtering lovely except that the webpage that is generated is fairly non descript and I would like to change it. I have read various Squid FAQs etc but to no avail.
