That was a typo and it came from writing emails too late in the day. Heaven alone knows what piping the output of ps through squid would do but I'm certainly not experimenting on my system. Talking about these powerful, useful little commands, one book I've found increasingly useful is an O'Reilly one "Linux in a Nutshell - A desktop Quick Reference" by Jessica Perry Hekman and the Staff of O'Reilly and Associates; ISBN 1565921674. It covers all the core commands, costs about £15 and I'm always finding myself reaching for it. People might object that all the information it gives is already available in the man pages but I still find it very handy. Nigel.

hi all Open Source for Education Development ===================================== following the abortive attempt to hold a meeting Llandrindod Wells in Sept, due to the fuel crisis, this has now been re-scheduled and will take place on : Thursday 23rd November, at the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells ----------------------------------------------------------------- A final agenda has not yet been determined, but the main aims of the meeting are:- 1. To discuss the future development of Open Source tools, applications etc for use in schools, including :- - direction for development and distribution - management and organisation - specific projects, including those to be evaluated by Becta's Small Scale Technology Pilots. - potential role of commercial organisations Given the success of the Powys server project, this will form a main part of the discussion, hence the location of the meeting. 2. To discuss some of the matters arising from the July Open Source for Education seminar in Coventry, including finalising reports for Becta and the DfEE. The email is an informal inivitation for people who may wish to attend the meeting, however space will be limited. If you wish to attend or find out more about the meeting please contact myself (malc(a)ngfl.gov.uk). Also, let me know about further ideas etc and things you would like to discuss. Further information will be sent out in the next couple of weeks. Squid ACL blocking url's

Hi, I have managed to get Squid up and running on our school network this week and I'm keen to make use of the facility to block keywords in the URL. Not being familiar with regex I am hoping that someone in this list can help with a simple (if possible!) explanation. I would like to add that having been a Microsoft prisoner I am enjoying the new found freedom that Linux has provided, suddenly new ideas can be tried, excellent open license software is available (money is always tight) and I am hoping to get a few 386/486 stations up as X terminals using LSTP. Exciting times but it take a bit of time to get the Microsoft schema replaced with Linux schema!!. Regards, Andy.

Squid proxy - success!!!!!

Many, many thanks for all your help and advice in setting up my Linux proxy server. I had a parents' evening tonight which started at 6.00 pm, so I stayed after school and set about configuring squid. The main problem I had was that I didn't notice that a small part of the /etc/squid.conf was *not* commented out - glancing through the file I thought it was all commented out and the bit which wasn't dealt with access control. I was managing to access the squid proxy from another workstation, but could not get any further than an error message telling me I did not have authorisation. Once I spotted this, I had squid working within a few minutes. You know that feeling when you've cracked it - sheer elation! I shall now be looking for tweaks etc. to make the whole thing work even better!! -- Phillip Deackes Using Storm Linux

I am now trying to set up my squid machine . . help!!!

A couple of weeks ago, many of you gave me some invaluable help on setting up squid on a machine at school. The aim was to use it as a web proxy cache on an RM Connect network. OK. I have the machine connected to the network and have configured it so that I can connect to the Internet through the network card. I put the address of our router as the gateway. I installed squid and made changes to /etc/squid.conf as suggested by Simon Rainey. I quote his comments below: cache_peer icpcache-1.rmplc.co.uk parent 8080 3130 no-digest cache_peer icpcache-2.rmplc.co.uk parent 8080 3130 no-digest cache_peer icpcache-3.rmplc.co.uk parent 8080 3130 no-digest cache_peer icpcache-4.rmplc.co.uk parent 8080 3130 no-digest # define the local network acl local-network dst 212.132.119.128/255.255.255.192 acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 # force all requests for local resources to go direct always_direct allow local-network # force all requests for non-local resources to go via a parent never_direct allow all You will need to reconfigure the browsers on all your stations to use your new proxy. By default Squid will listen on port 3128 wheras the IFL proxies listen on port 8080. If you want to keep your local proxy consistent then add this to the Squid config: http_port 8080 So far so good. My ignorance is almost total - I have a few questions: How do I make it so that other machines on the network can see the new linux machine? When I set it up I could not get it to assign an IP address automatically - don't understand dhcp. I am not sure how it can use the dhcp services of the server. I assigned it the last IP address in our allocated block, assuming the dhcp server would then not assign this address to another workstation. What do I set as the hostname and domain? On my home machine I just used a made-up hostname and the domain of my ISP. At school, my email address is p.deackes(a)oadby-gartree.leics.sch.uk; we run our own mailserver at mail.oadby-gartree.leics.sch.uk. When I enter the proxy details in Internet Explorer on the Windows workstations what do I actually put for the new machine? I gather Simon's suggestions mean that the port is 8080, but what about the proxy address? I hope things are vaguely on target since I can surf the web OK. I am currently using isdncache.rmplc.co.uk:8080 as the proxy in Netscape. Many thanks indeed for your help - and sorry to be so dense!! -- Phillip Deackes Using Storm Linux

With a 486sx, I would think that X would be slowish ... but with a decent amount of memory (16 Mb +) may be ok ... Without this, I wonder if it would be worth the effort (of course if you have no alternative, but have the time to experiment (!) you can't really lose ... as the experience gained may be valuable for the future) Kevin.

Check that libmm.so.11 exists (or something like it) - try /usr/lib for starters ? 2. Check paths in /etc/ld.conf - this is the list of paths that the dynamic loader uses when trying to find libraries 3. Maybe reconfigure ld with the ld.conf (if the ld.conf looks ok) - I can't remember the details, but the program is ld, which presumably you run as root with some options that make it reread its config file ? > I have Squid and dial on demand working. > Was okay b4 I upgrade from 6.3 to 7 :-) Sounds like either the wrong version is installed or the lib paths are screwed someone ? I've been trying to get some old RM 486SX machines (diskless) to justify their continuing existence.........does anyone have a view on whether the LTSP will work these machines (nothing much else ever has!!) LTSP

hi all i've spent a bit of this afternoon working with the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) and managed to get a X-window terminal running in 40 minutes(!) from my Redhat 6.2 (oh yes) server running at home. I've used a floppy boot image from the Etherboot project, used DHCP (rather than bootp) and its gone straight through to give me an X terminal first go (while i went out to feed the dog, came back in the room to find a twm login prompt!). Needless to say i'm impressed....... the downloads are Redhat 6.2 RPMs, as is the install script to set up the root file system. They've also got some precompiled kernels for certain network cards (mine was a 3c905) and a generic one which makes a slightly larger kernel image. There are tar.gz's as well, the RPMs may not like Suse given the config file changes they make. There is also a fixed xfs rpm. i'll continue to tweak today, and will locally at the local apps functionality. Given today's New Systems thread, for ease of management this is the way to. The idea of Server Remote management is a key plus point for Linux, but managing the clients aswell, thats great... perhaps the ose site can mirror the LTSP site for the UK?
