[opensuse-edu] Learning the Open Source Way Project - inquiry regarding announcment possibility

Good morning We, the FLOSSCom team & Ubuntu education, just started the “Learning the Open Source Way” project . The project is not about using open source software in education, but about the way open source communities and individuals learn. We believe that the open source way of learning could help improving (formal) education, e.g. the support model, the way of content creation, the individual skills people gain… Would there be a chance to promote this project through opensuse education? I don’t think that there should be any competition between opensuse EDU and edubuntu, but a common interest for all - but if there is, just let me know. I included below the promotion text as to be announced at the Ubuntu side, more information can be found at www.flosscom.net, or just ask me directly. You work with it and you know how to help yourself when you run into a particular problem. You share your experiences and know-how with others on the internet. You participate. Perhaps you didn't realise that this makes you one of the more advanced learners on our planet? Have you considered yourself being a very talented learner and communicator? At the beginning of July, the FLOSSCom team and Ubuntu Education have launched the “Learning the Open Source Way” project. We want to advance our collective understanding on how learning, communication and collaboration works in open source and how these experiences can help to improve (formal) education. We are interested in learning what you are doing out here, your experiences and how you see things work. I invite you to join me and our group of interested learners and educators, currently including people from Germany, Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, South Africa and the United Kingdom... Please come along for our virtual meetups and share your experiences and insights from the open source world! We are itiching to learn from your way of doing things in the open source community! We just started so there are still many ways to get involved and to help us shaping this project. Want to get a picture of what we are up to? Lars, How are you? How is the Baby? I'm wondering about the 905 mb size of the new disk. Is it programs or dependencies pushing us into dvd size? The image is untested and only for the open SUSE 10.3-Beta1. Hi all, Has anyone tried http://italc.sf.net/wiki/ ? Looks very interesting. I'm planning to use it in my Linux class. Have just compiled it on my notebook last night, and will try to install in on all the client later today after class. [opensuse-edu] Contribution to the Education Project

Hi there, my name is Sebastian Dziallas, I am a german student and I would like to contribute to the openSUSE Education Project. To introduce myself a little bit more, I am part of a group of students, who are administrating at our school the computer system together with two teachers. At the moment we have a mixed environment, with mainly Windows Computers. But since I (and also one of the teachers) am using openSUSE at home, we would also like to extend the number of computers running Linux. Since we have now holidays it is a bit difficult to test a lot of packages in our system, but in the future, we could test the different packages. So I could for example propose to translate now some wiki pages: I am a native german speaker, but I also speak English and partly French. Maybe, you could let me know how I can help you. [opensuse-edu] What is a verticle solution for education?

In sales parlance, a vertical solution is one that covers all the components needed (application set\Hardware set) to perform a business task, i.e. HP has a vertical business solution, it sells: PC's, printers, switches, servers and software. In education a "vertical solution" could be defined as a set of software pieces that encompass all of the tasks an Educator is confronted with daily, i.e. a teacher needs an attendance module, grading module, course management, reference materials management and reporting\assessment module, etc. A school needs a desktop OS, server OS, web applications, e-mail, firewall, etc. With SLE, openSUSE and the EDU-CD we can provide all of the above and more. The EDU-CD adds to the standard business solution provided by Novell those tools necessary by compiling the various open source components like : Centre\SIS, Moodle and openbiblio and more onto one OS and makes them easy to install and configure, thus creating a "vertical solution". I would like to see programming enhancements to these offerings which make them more compatible with "No Child Left Behind" and those similar standards\requirements across the globe as we move forward. I think that we could entice the programmers involved in the different OSS projects for schools to combine their talents here and make these programs and the EDU-CD a standard for world wide educational environments. Think about the promise of an Open Source project that helps educators evaluate the progress of students and the effectiveness of their curriculum as compared to achievements and curricula of other students and schools on an international scale. With Moodle as the core curricula management tool, courses\assignments are internationalized simply by sharing them as modules in the Moodle forum, enhanced locally and returned back to the community in the epitome of open source. I believe that great teaching exists all over the world but the ability of the best teachers to effect the largest group of students is stifled by the boundaries of the physical classroom. Greetings, My name is Jason Grizzle, and I'm an instructional technology specialist with Jackson County Schools in Georgia (USA). I'm excited about the educational focus for open suse. As a system, we're looking to migrate to SLED in (probably) 2-3 years for our Windows machines. My job function is tech. integration and teacher training, and I'm very interested in beta testing or developing documentation for you.
