For those of you who've not come across Debian before, we're a world-wide voluntary organisation (read, chaotic jumble of mailing lists) that puts together a Linux distribution (and soon a HURD distribution) and gives it away. Debian doesn't pay people to do this, and doesn't sell what it produces, and in most legal senses doesn't really exist (i.e. the machines in the mirror network mostly belong to people like me, rather than to Debian, and the bandwidth is donated rather than paid for). This probably gives a pretty good feel for what Debian is all about: http://www.uk.debian.org/social_contract which you will notice leads into the The Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG), which is where the Open Source Definition came from. My internet machine, that hosts the Debian UK mirror, may be of use to OSIE, since it has about 30GB of spare disk, and a 20Mbit/s connection at a well connected ISP. This machine could act as either a primary host or mirror site for the web site, and could do DNS secondarying etc. as well. Something I'd be interested in working on (although perhaps a SuSE list is not the right place to spend too much time discussing this ;-) would be producing Debian CD images, tuned to the needs of educational users. Debian has accumulated some funds in the UK, and have been looking for a worthwhile cause to spend them on (we never really need to pay for anything that actually makes Debian work, so don't have much use for money), so we could probably afford to have a few thousand CDs pressed, and send them out to schools that are interested. Default settings problems

I am having great difficulty finding an easy way to change defaults. Especially for GUI programs which either don't have an obvious global configuration or if they do it is undocumented. KDE: Someone mentioned the global configuration a while back, but I can't find the post. What I need to do is set up locale (to UK), screensaver and the proxy & plugin settings for konqurer centrally. Openoffice.org: How do I get this to default to British, rather than US settings. Even deleting the US dictionaries and ammending dictionary.lst dosn't do the trick. Gimp: insists on defaulting to US letter paper. Mozilla: I can't get /etc/mozilla/prefs.js to do anything useful at all. Need to be able to set the proxy, homepage and being able to configure IMAP here would be very useful. I also wonder whether it's wise to have all system files and software on the raid partition? Once the machine's set up, system folders don't change all that much. User data does, and that's what it's vital to cover. KDE troubles

Hi all: I have an annoyance that I hope someone can easily solve. I use kppp to dial out for my e-mail and it has worked well until I upgraded the desktop. Now, if I run YAST2 it changes the sui on pppd and I have to run konqueror in su mode to change it before use (sorry, more of a GUI user). I tried changing it with chmod but this didn't work. The other problem I have is that konqueror as su opens up on my desktop and then vanishes so I have to log out of me and in as root. Also, on the root desktop if I minimise programs they disappear from the task bar. I can see them with alt+tab but it would be nice to see them on the taskbar. Does any of this make sense or sound familiar. Any help greatly appreciated. Paul

TA FOR THE ADVICE. I HAVE READ THE HOW-TO BUT IT DOESN'T MENTION THE PROBLEM. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT NIS WOULD HAVE SOLVED THE UID PROBLEM. DOES THIS MEAN THAT I WILL HAVE TO CHECK EVERY USER OR CAN I PUT THEM INTO A GROUP AND GIVE THAT A UID. software raid 8.0

Hi I've just set up a server with 4 new 9Gb SCSI drives and using software raid to mirror them. Everythings working fine, the drives are all synced. This is my problem. While setting up the raids, it wouldn't let me raid the /boot parition. This how the paritions are set up at the moment. I've obviously got a partition spare (sdb2) the same size as sda2 with nothing on it. /dev/md0 / /dev/sda2 /boot /dev/md1 /home /dev/md2 /export Should I have partioned differently? Can I change it? What would happen if sda fails? Should I manually mirror /boot to the spare partition? I don't mind(!!) having to start from scratch if it'll give me more peace of mind. MS Excel to OpenOffice.org conversion

Hi Apologies for the cross-posting. A teacher at one of the schools here has developed some Excel spreadsheets for demonstrating various elements of maths. He's essentially programmed a whole interface using macros and conditional formatting to make a highly useable interactive whiteboard maths teaching solution. I'm desperately trying to persuade him to open source it, but... One of the hurdles is that he doesn't believe it can be made to work under OOo with the same look and feel as he's painstakingly developed. I'm certain it can but don't have the necessary skills to undertake the work. He's arguing that the cost of his solution would be far less than the cost of the MS licences and therefore it makes no odds if he sells it; therefore no OOo, no free solution. Poor argument, I know, but if we can prove OOo can do the work, I think he can be persuaded to GPL the remainder. He's offered one module for me to prove it can be done. Any takers? Quick question, does anyone use any Linux software to filter their email? We get quite a lot of email passed through, over 1000 a hour, and it would be nice to use something fairly simple to work between our SMTP feed and Exchange (5.5) Server, preferably (I know it will take a LOT of space) that can store every email passed through, for say a week? cron job with ftp

Hi folks, I've written a script to upload some static html pages to an ftp server. I've used .netrc for the connection settings. It all works well when I run the script. Now, I've put that script in /etc/cron.daily and on the RedHat system I've got, that should run at 4am. But it doesn't work. The logs show that it fails to login to the remote FTP system when the job is run by cron. To summarise... The script works if I now sit here and type: /etc/cron.daily/webupdate It doesn't work if I change the system time to 4am and watch it try! Fails to login. I've checked the permissions on the script in /etc/cron.daily are the same as the others in that directory. Any pointers please? Telnet

I have eventually managed to get the telnet demon to run on suse8.0 (I think possibly one of the updates did this - although I didn't notice at the time) However, as soon as I have entered the username and password it simply closes the connection (to a remote client). I reckon there is sufficient income from Teacher training and associated merchandising for us to operate this commercially but to make all the materials fee and put the certification revenues into free software. Unfortunately I have to do the day job too. Phil, why are they going down the GNVQ route? The government will be phasing out GNVQs for schools replacing it with VGCSE. If they simply want all kids certificated in ICT, get them to do theINGOTs. It will be much less expensive and much less hassle for teachers and lets face it how many kids got employed on the basis of a GNVQ Int in IT? Regards, -- Ian

[suse-linux-uk-schools] AutoYast missing software and the like Su SE 8.1

Good people, I need to produce an iso image of a small system which should fit on one disk Having built the system and copied the distro to a suitable place on the hard disk, I tried autoyast -> clone system this made a nice clone.xml which seems to correspond to what I need "create iso image" was then true to it's word and I burned this image Now when I try to install from this new cd all is fine until "Error while configuring software selections Please try again" The CD certainly has a pile of rpms on it but perhaps not the base ones Attempting a manual installation with same cd shows (after evaluating package selection) No base selection available 'error no proposal' So I had a look at creating a profile manually to create the .xml file As you will know there is a tree on the left with the usual + signs indicating subtrees there are no subtrees for the sections "software" and "misc" The manual clearly shows these as having subtrees Perhaps this is related to my initial problem. Dual network cards

Is this list archived somewhere? I can't see it on the www.suse.com site. Did I notice a reference to the use of dual network cards on this list within the last few days. Sticks in my mind that someone referred to that working OK on Suse pro 8.1. That's what I thought one of my colleagues was using (so I ignored the message), but it turns out he has gone to the Enterprise Server 8 so as to get support for all his Raid stuff, etc. Help - I suggested he buy an Intel Pro 100S dual port card in the belief that it would work, and now my name's mud. I (my school) had used TT and I thought it was rather unexceptional and I wrote a lot of material myself. My current school uses it but I don't bother as I do most of the material myself. It is relatively easy to scan documents and make short videos (I have not done any videos yet but have a camera - although I can't get it to work with 8.1) and put them onto a web server. It is also better to make a localised series of material as the Telford specific stuff does not always reach the students in the same way as the local shop etc. It also galls me to pay £3,000 a year for a few web pages that could be knocked up by 6th form students as part of their AQA Unit 11 work. The other problem with TT is that it is intended for A-C students and is therefore useless for Foundation students who really need web based material. TT have not addressed this issue as presumably there is no money/kudos in it? Ooo would be fine for GNVQ but with the old caveat that there is no Access like DB to use. I am going to try to get my students to sign up for UKLinux and play with phpMyAdmin. The course spec does not require them to use forms, although these are "pretty", so php should be fine. The other alternative that I can see, though not free, is to use Ability Database as that will run with Wine/CrossOver etc. It is fairly cheap and has the same Doze feel as Access. Call me silly, but howabout he gets together with a few other schools (and Ian!) to create an Star/OOo equivalent. If he adds up the costs of MS Windows, Office and Publisher plus the outrageous charge by Thomas Telford (that created by public money should remain public!), he would easily be justified in retaining a student for a year under best value. The MS solution to these courses is highly socially exclusive, and therefore the exact opposite of what schools should be using. The school I help out at is considering using the Thomas Telford online materials to run a gnvq course. It appears that this is very MS specific and requires MS office. This would kick a big hole in our current OOo/LTSP setup. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions I can take to the head? -- Phil Driscoll

IP's are DHCP, so that's kinda random. The name (netbios?) is unique though, IdentD service also running too, if that's any help. :S How can I block by pc name? Yes, I have some.... Squid works its filtering not only on ACL's but on IP/subnets too. Assuming that the IP addresses of your machines in the specific room have a commonality about them then it should be easy enough for you to block an entire room. Squid blocking per room?/Per machine (wildcard)?

Is there any easy way anyone can see of letting Squid block internet access to an entire room of kids? At the moment, the ACL's block some users and some websites, but sometimes, for obvious reasons a teacher wants us to block, say, Room 30 from having internet access. Each machine is Win2k, and is named '30-pcxx' where xx is a number to uniquely id the machine. I've written a vb program before that runs before IE, but it isn't very successful!! Any ideas?? Not exactly Linux but definitely open source... On our RM Connect 2.32 network I have been having increasing problems with IE5.001 which is now dpread over 4 packages at least. Realising (thanks Linux User mag) that Mozilla do a Windows version, I've downloaded and installed that. Very, very impressive is the least that can be said. Not as yet, but why wait? May be it could be tied into the LPI stuff. We're already a Cisco Acadmey (take newbies through to CCNA by stretching the content over 6 semesters), and there are (but we aren't (-: ) MS Academies in most cities (which presumably do a similar job of making the MCP accessible to the inexperienced - should make the course about 4 hours (-; ). It's an excellent way of introducing generic Linux skills to a wider audience, and help up the skill levels available for those schools/companies interested in taking the Linux route. BTW, the Cisco Academy makes us money through charging small fees for the course, but Cisco don't give us any money, just make the materials available online and a forum to ask questions in which is usuallly populated with one or two knowledgeable Cisco staff. While ur on the subject of samba, any ideas on howto get a digital camera accessed by a samba domain user? cos i only seem to be able to be shown any pictures from the camera, when im logged on as a local user. Also MSN Messenger wont run unless your domain account has been added as an adminstrator on that machine. We are actually going to continue using Windows clients (moving the entire school over to linux is an eventual goal but will not be happening for a few years yet). The solution getting them from a database is not possible as we do not keep a copy of users passwords. I'll bear in mind the idea of creating a database though and sticking them into an NT server and a linux server that way - could be useful in the future. No decisions have been made yet and I'm just looking into what is actually practical. From the look of that samba roadmap a great deal of the features there look useful to me - and looking at the alpha the group mapping feature looks particularly useful as presumably that fixes the problems I've had before where group policies don't work just by putting in a group name in poledit - you have to use default user and have multiple policy files and give each group a different netlogon dir (if people understand what i mean).
