[suse-linux-uk-schools] Help with PPP

Can anyone help a total beginner..please! I have installed 7.0 on my system, dual boot with Win98..no probs there, but had to attach external modem (Pace Linnet 34Plus) as my "winmodem" is no good for Linux - according to web based info. However, I cant get Linux to see the specific type of modem - it just sees an unknown device and uses it! When attempting to use kinternet to dial my ISP, it dials ok, connects briefly and then disconnects, telling me that "The ppp daemon has died: pppd options error (exit code = 2)" and the man pages tell me this is due to multiple conflicting options...what do I do!!! scsi discs

thanks to everyone who made suggestions about my scsi card. I gave up in the end (as did several others who were in the know). Now I have a working card and linux knows its there, how do I mount up the scsi peripherals so that my students can access them via SAMBA. None of the scsi peripherals are avaialbe at the moment through KDE, I have tried. Sorry to be so simlistic, we all have to start somewhere John Kinchin

I've just come across the above on the net at http://auc.sourceforge.net/ . It looks very interesting, as the notion of web based 'group ware' seems worthwhile. To quote from their home page: --- Authenticated User Community for Education is an intranet system designed for use in a K-12 setting but is also useful in many other settings. It offers the ability for users to have a uniform web-based interface to discussion forums, e-mail (similar to hotmail, etc.), file management, and a searchable user database. Also, "Interactive Classrooms" provide a means for students and teachers to have a web-based extension to their in-class interaction. The system runs from a C-based monolithic CGI script. MySQL is used for database storage. Also, the web-based mail client supports MIME parts/attachments, IMAP, mbox, and multiple mail folders. --- Does anyone have experience of using this or similar products? Coupled with an always-on static IP address, something like this seems to have a lot of potential. On the subject of which, how do Felsted and others maintain their own internet presence locally rather than using web hosting services? Which ISPs would provide this facilty? SQL and PHP

I have been looking at the possibility of using SQL and PHP on the network. However, I only know the following things about SQL: - It does something with databases - It looks difficult to learn. I would like to know about your experiences of SQL, especially the following: Which version is best - PostGreSQL, MySQL? How easy is it to use with PHP? Last night I attended a DfEE/NGfL meeting entitled "The Classroom of the Future" as a Governor of our local Primary School. This is one of a series of meeting. It was an interesting meeting but seemed mainly targeted at secondary schools. However, there were only four exhibitors; BECTA, BBC, BT and Microsoft. There was no evidence of Open Source even when I questioned the BECTa representative. Was SuSE invited to attend this? It Doesn't look like it from the list of exhibitors in the back of the glossy handout. Is it worth volunteering? I think there are more to come. Cheers Paul

Rumours of your demise are greatly exagerated?

Hi Roger (all): I saw a news blurb on the Internet (everything on there is true!) that SuSE US is down sizing and the MD says that SuSE is no more, expired and gone to meet it's maker etc. I hope this is just a blip as I am in with SuSE for the long haul. As regards the meeting, I will produce maps, directions and other documentation over this week and send them on to whoever requests them. People can e-mail me at school with fax numbers et al and I will send them forward. I concur with some of the other comments so far about broadening the scope of the meeting. I will try to invite my local LEA representative and I have some people from other feeder schools. I will try to get some representatives from business if I can but Salisbury is not really a high tech Mecca (as I have found out trying to get work experience for my year 12 ICT students). I think the focus should be on "open source". I don't have any beef against MS per say but do believe that education should have access to free tools for students to develop, not be tied to expensive, corporate dictated policies. I also like the idea (idealist I know) that the people that create license free software make it based on a sharing and pooling of ideas, not from some closed shop. Education should be "free" and children shpould be able to explore this medium in depth. My students can not do that with MS/Office. Look forward to hearing from you all. Open Source in Schools -- Meeting 12-03-2001 ============================================ A meeting has been arranged on Monday 12th March at: Westwood St Thomas School Westwood Road Salisbury Wilts SP2 9HS to discuss the use of Open Source software in schools. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Very many thanks to Paul Taylor of Westwood St Thomas for his offer of this venue. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Chris Dawkins of Felsted School has agreed to speak, as has Malcolm Herbert of Red Hat. It is hoped that other items of interest can be arranged. A proposal made by Michael Brown of Fen Systems for the formation of an Association for the promotion of Open Source software in education will be discussed. It is hoped that this can be combined with the recent discussion about a virtual schools' LUG and web site. Yesterday I set it up just b4 lunch, but with the allow/deny public_rooms before the nonedsites rules, and worked during lunch, nonedsites where okay, but during P4, the machines that didnt have access at lunch to any sites, now had access but no rules applied, so had access to all banned domains and nonedsites. The machines that had access at lunch where fine and still had rules applied. Disabling the 'windows' key

I'm doing the samba (ver. 2.0.5) at the moment and enjoying myself. I've set samba up as my NT login controller and used policy editor to disable access to windows unless properly logged in. I'm feeling good, I think I have secured access to the workstations. Within ten minutes of this new setup one of my more persistent Y6's have circumvented the whole setup by hitting the windows key (or CTRl-ESC) and running explorer from the task manager. Once the login window is dragged out of the way the children have unfettered access to the local harddrive. 1) How can I disable the windows key/CTRL-ESC shortcut? 2) Is there any way to limit access to the local harddrive even when someone is legitimately logged on? Running a Suse 6.4 server, on a 10-client win95 network, using samba for shares. Many thanks Darren Garside Freshford Primary School Bath

Virtual users in sendmail?

Is there any way to setup sendmail to receive email for virtual users. I.e. i dont have to create them a full account on the linux machine. I want to have a list of usernames and passwords which it reads and then using a pop3 server (qpopper?) they can connect and read them. I am migrating to linux on this server from windows - in windows i used mercury and it worked fine. Any ideas? You can disable the 'run' dialog from the 'start' button using a registry entry. And you can also edit the start menu programs to remove explorer. Squid and Netscape

This is another installment in the extensive series "Dave displays his ignorance". I can set up a box with Squid at home which other clients can access. I use wvdial to establish Internet access via a modem on the Linus box. However, what I really want to do is enable Squid at school but I don't understand how I tell Squid where to get it's Internet access. All other machines go through a gateway (a cisco router 172.19.50.1) and then to an LEA proxy 192.168.2.253:80. The login to the proxy is via Igear software. I've looked through squid.conf but can find nothing very relevant. As part of my playing around I thought that if I establish an Internet connection on the Linux machine by surfing with Netscape then Squid may get the necessary links established. However, my installation of Netscape (from SuSE 7.0) has no option to set a proxy address - it should be in Edit-Preferences-Advanced but it isn't. Dave Williams

Linking a mail server and squid to mysql

I want to setup a mail server and squid linked to mysql. Squid i have found a compilable external program to link it to mysql so that i have no problem with. But linking a mail server is my problem. I want to set it up so via a web interface (that i'm not bothered about at the moment) I can create users that run on both squid and mail - therefore they have an email address and access to the web (I want to restrict the access). Previously I have done this on windows using software called WinRoute but I am now moving to linux because of its increased stability. Manufacturers: I'd like to think of a growing market in schools for PCs pre-installed with a free Unix, but expect that most demand would be for dual boot machines - and MS will not allow Windows to be pre-installed alongside another OS. I want to use my linux box to look at the activity of a number of ports on a network switch. (I hope that I have the terminology correct). Every so often I take a look at the activity on the switch lights and record it on paper and then "guess" which ports have not had an activity on them for some time. I then pull the cables and patch into a port that some one wants me to make active. I sometimes get it wrong. In larger schools and organizations I know there is a way of getting port stistics available. Someone said that I can get this list from using snmp? Is this so? Is this yet another way to use this fantastic OS? Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated - even "RTFM" as long as you say which "M" ;-). Thanks John

Then you can mount this image as if it were a normal CD with: mount -t iso9660 -o loop cd_image_1.iso /fake_cdrom1 Just get samba to share this directory, and windows to connect to it. This will perform quite a bit better than a normal CD, it's MUCH faster and will be able to cope better with multi-users (i.e a classroom full of kids). I'm not sure how this effects the copyright on the disk matterial, I assume if you legally allowed to share a CD drive it is no different to sharing the image of the CD via a hard disk. Hi folks, If you use a MS network at school you will proably have little problem setting these machines up but if you use Netware and utilise the policies facilities, be aware that it will change the action of the laptop when NOT connected to the network. I run Linux on my own and it integrates well with the school and home networks. When I was doing consultancy, I never had to make big changes, usually only the IP address etc. Star Office or (with its Ameringlish dictionaries) Applix seem fine suites (or Corel but it costs a little more) or the freebie Wordperfect is excellent. In ten or fifteen years, expect many claims under health and safety for failing to meet the workstation requirements (screen size and view causing neck injuries, poor keyboard ergonomics causing RSI of fingers, wrists and elbows, etc.). Linux print server - how do i get Win 95 machines to see it?

On my our school RM Connect 2.4 network I have one machine connected to a laser printer. The machine is used solely for this purpose and runs Windows 95. I installed Linux on it and the printer worked fine, but whatever I did I could not get the other machines on the network to see it at all. The Samba configuration baffled me completely. Hi All, This may seem a little off-beam, but the list is largely people in the appropriate field ... We are thinking of embarking on a Laptops-for-All scheme within the school, and would like to provide both wholly-owned and lease-lend laptops. I would like to hear (OFFLIST is probably best) from anyone who has gone through the horrors of installing a laptop on every pupil in their school. I need to be able provide our Head with a decent set of pro's, con's and possibilities. I also need to be able to quote experiences to her. Once I have produced the documents (which will, naturally, be unbiassed,) I intend to make this available to others on the list. Another chance for me to display my ignorance :-) All that follows is based on SuSE 7.0. I am changing our ip address range from 172.19.50.x (255.255.255.0) to 172.16.y.x (255.255.252.0) - reason - more numbers. However, while moving over I need to let machines on both ranges communicate eg. clients printing to print servers etc. Is this possible? If I set up 2 interfaces on the server (derby) with ifconfig eth0:0 172.19.50.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 ifconfig eth0:1 172.16.0.2 netmask 255.255.252.0 and turn ip forwarding on with yast, should machines on the 2 ip ranges be able to communicate. eg. ping each other I've tried it and they don't. Am I trying something silly and if not what other steps do I need? Dave Williams

suse 7.0 firewall help

Hi I can't configure suse 7.0 to run a simple firewall. HELP! Can someone list what I have to do in English please to configure a firewall on a box with a ppp dialup and a nic for the internal network (eth0) I need masq. We are soon to get a 10Mb internet access so then it will be 2 nic's Is the setup a lot different from the above? At the moment when I say yes to ip_forward and/or start firewall in rc.config, I get lots of permission denied statements on boot. You cannot read passwords from an NT box. Something which a few hackers might like to contradict. i.e. If you have existing NT users and want Linux compatibility you will have to generate new passwords somehow - the question is how yo can control the process. However you can get user information, such as user names, full names: net use "Domain Users" /domain net use <username> /domain when run on an NT station will generate a list of users or all details on one user. (The /domain forces it to read details from the domain controller rather than the local station.) I'm sure there's a way to generate a list of details for all users in one go, in some sort of fixed width spaced or csv format - I just can't remember how right now! I have not tried the stuff which follows but I think it is possible: By a bit of scripting on the NT box and the Linux as well you can create a text list which can be used to generate Linux accounts. If you can write a script to generate a password as part of that, great. You have a text file which can be used to create Linux users and passwords. This looks like a perl sort of task. A bit of further script manipulation now needed to convert the Linux file into something containing lines of the form net use <username> <passwd> /domain /fullname:"<fullname>" This would change the NT password of an existing user. /add on the end would create a new user if need be. Your users now have linux and NT accounts with the same password. Tacky or what? I await comments telling me to bog off! There may be a simple way to do it which I have missed. Let's reverse the problem hovever. If a Linux box is the Primary Domain Controller of an NT network using Samba you can have NT logins which are user and password compatible with Linux, and which stay that way. Hello Christopher, I believe you can achieve windows based log onto unix type eviroment via the Samba stuff. This means that a unix (linux) machine could be both a NIS/YP and SMB server to provide user authentication (from the standard unix password systems). That same machine could also provide shared drives via Samba or NFS. I sort of got it working at home, but other 'professionals' probably had more luck. Simon W.

Squid Caches

Hi How can I find out if squid is using a file in the cache rather than just fetching the page everytime? Also, I was told you can setup squid, so that when the traffic of the net connection is low, that i can update its cache with new versions of the files if required. Does anyone know a way in which I can centrally store usernames and passwords across several machines. This must be a very common situation in a school or college environment? I have a very mixed environment with an Exchange mail server, Mac Manager ontop of AppleshareIP and some Redhat boxes running Apache. I know that many of these machines support LDAP - I've also heard of a PAM module for Apache.... Anyone had a good experience of tackling this kind of issue? cheers, Russell RWe(a)southbank.org

Proxy woes

Dear all: I had a working squid proxy a few weeks ago but now it is ceased to be. I have had some help from various quarters (thanks to SuSE) but still no joy. I appreciate it is hard to diagnose when not in front of the device but... I had my linux box on a fixed address x.x.x.1 and our router goes through x.x.x.3 to dialnet. I set it up in September in about 2 nanoseconds but now I can't get it to work at all. Justin at SuSE gave me a few top tips and I determined that I could traceroute www.yahoo.com (e.g) but when I try to ping it it dies. I was told that there is some sort of internal firewall which I have yet to discover. The problem is that since Linux went down someone has taken over my ip address and installed a windows bow which fired straight up with win proxy. I can not get squid to work for the life of me and yet internally it is fine. Anyone know some useful diagnostic line commands to see what is happening and get some idea of how to proceed? Paul
