One thing I meant to mention and kept forgetting: Anyone who teaches maths might be interested in the fantastically good quality worksheets etc. which can be done with TeX/LaTeX which are installed on every Linux system. Also just for creating high quality (much better than word processed) documents. Hi, I tried an external US robotics Sportster 56K V90 on serial port 1 - No problems - Dialed and connected first go. Of the internal modems... The ISA modems (PC56PVP) were found on the list at http://www.grapevine.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html and it tells me that these are win modems. I was unable to find the PCI Modem (PCI56PVP) on the list, although other parts of the document implied that PCI modems will not work. Both of these modem types use the PCtel Chip set. The documentation goes on to bolster my belief that external modems are the best bet. I have told Netscape that I am using a modem, but it is unable to see the net, do I need to set up a proxy server?

Many thanks for all of the replies. Not much time to play at the weekend either, I must be cured, no longer a silicon junkie. I tried another ISA and a PCI 56K without joy - I will try the 'modem site' today, One of the modems can be set to non-PNP but has no option for setting ports IRQs etc. I did however have success with an old internal 4800 modem which configured without any problems after I set it to port 1 and disabled serial port 1 in the BIOS. but none of my ISPs don't support such low speeds any more and I just timed out! :-) :-( Does wvdial only look at ports 1 and 2? As a matter of interest the 56K modems were all generic types and none of them mentioned the fact that they were win modems in the sparse literature. The difference is: I don't have any NT on the network!! Samba acts as the PDC. So our environments do not match after all. Hello all: I have managed to successfully install Samba and set up all parameters using the SWAT tool but can't seem to get the printer to work. I have the printer hooked up to my main machine in the classroom and there are 15 9x stations on the network that print to this device. I assume the print request goes through the NT server upstairs and then to my machine so don't know if the permissions are modified by this? I can look at the print queue and see the files waiting to go but it says that there is no server even though it lists my machine as the target one. I read in one of my collection of steadily growing Linux books that you need to have windows (HP in this case) .dlls and other driver files in the printer folder on the Linux end but is this really necessary? Once I can crack this I think I will be sailing. I'm sure it is quite simple but I am climbing the curve like many others. The room I am in is a headache as none of the 9x workstations print all of the time and most times the student has to restart the machine several times before they receive a message "do you want to print what is in the queue". Since there is no printing happening, most students keep hitting the button and later that day or even the next day it decides to print and I have loads of wasted sheets. One for the Gurus...well at least more of a GURU than myself... I have a lap top with SUSE 6.3 running everything...well almost.. I can telnet to it and start a X session from a PC using the usual export DISPLAY = w.x.y.z I have a trial copy of GNOME's Xserver for Acorn machines. This requires an XDM connection (or if it doesn't I don't know how to start it) Having set up everything I was told to by Gnome on the Acorn side I keep getting Authorisation refused and the Acorn Xserver stops before it starts. I can ping each from both by name and number. Is there anything I have to look at and enable on the Linux side? -- Alan Davies Head of Computing Birkenhead School

I understand that "winmodems" AND PCI modems have problems with Linux. I did visit a site that deals with this aspect of Linux. Unfortunately I don't remember it right now. Maybe when I get home I will find that one out and put it in a mail. Generally speaking any modem that allows COM and IRQ's to be set via jumpers should be OK. Something to do with amount of onboard modem hardware and it's capabilities. Good Luck anyways. And let us know of your findings. Raju

Adrian It would be worth checking to make sure that your modem isn't a Winmodem. A friend of mine had lots of problems with his modem and Linux until he discovered that he had a Winmodem and that it wasn't supported under Linux. I am trying to get my modem seen - internal 56K ISA type. Are the 4 'ports' that the modem can be assigned to in fact ports, or are they aliases? I'm sure that I saw somewhere in the manual a modem being aliased as 'tulip' When I try to auto detect the modem, LINUX only appears to look at serial ports 0 and 1 (internal cards tend to sit at 3 or 4) and then announces that no modem can be found, or that it may be in use elsewhere. I intend digging deeper over the weekend, but any ideas in the meantime please? NT Domain connections through Samba links

Useful to give access to information on selected machines on the other segment of our network, Admin -> Curriculum. This could also be useful for staff training of SIMS modules in one of our curriculum computer rooms. Hi, I would like to make an appeal on behalf of all of the Linux Newbies who are subscribed to the mailbase (myself included). If a question has been raised - please do not assume that Granny already sucks eggs. Perhaps two versions of the answer would be valid - the brief and technical version for the cognoscenti, and the long simplistic version for the newbies. I have been in the computer industry for over 20 years, and I have been using Linux for under 20 weeks. I need the simplistic version, and will probably continue to do so for some considerable time yet. To many of us who were raised on "the other" os's (RT8/10/11, CP-M/MP-M, DOS etc.) the un*x/linux family of os's are an alien tongue. So, please don't be shy - assume that your reply is for some poor newbie who'se stuck up the creek, sans paddle - in a sinking canoe. And if you _are_ cognoscenti or Linux Gurus, please don't be offended by the simplistic answers - some of us are visitors from another System. Finally, If you are a Newbie with a good idea or a hot tip, please post it - it may not be new to everyone (or even to anyone else), but the chances are that someone will benefit from it! Point well taken. But (there is always a but!) what I am doing does not cost the school a penny. So if they find the machines that I am setting up getting in their way, they can dump them and be no worse (or better) off. Having said that, it looks like the head teacher is negotiation some funds from the NGFL. aNThony, Mailing Lists: Usually the client that you use (I use microsoft outlook express) usually has a way of directing mail of this kind into folders created by the user. For example I have created a folder called "Mailing Lists". Within this folder are other folders, one of which is "Suse Linux for Schools". I have also created a message rule which searches for the string "suse-linux-uk-schools" in the subject and then moves the incoming mail to the above mentioned folder. I haven't checked but I suspect many of the the "web emails" also have similar facility. All this makes it easier for you to delete all the mail if you so wish ;-) Replies to the mailing list: Usually all you have to do is reply. The reply address is set to the mailing list address automatically. This is done by the owner of the mailing list (hello, Roger? :-) BackOffice: Are you asking if someone here has setup a newsgroup on the BackOffice server? ... I was not clear on what you wanted.. sorry. And yes. Thanks for the words of advice aNThony. I have the network setup presently to play NT to around 5 PCs. But that is because I could not find more patch cables. In another 2 weeks time I will be going with 15 PCs. The server also is connected to a freeserve account via dialup modem and Squid. I plan to have another PC setup with the intention of running the AUC (which I believe needs mySQL) Meanwhile there is a rumour that we may be getting some money. If that happens my first priority will be spending the money on trunking the entire school with Cat5s. Greetings, My name is Raju and I am a parent volunteer trying to start a network in the school which doesn't have one and does not have the heart to start one due to dire financial situation. I have acquired a few "donations" from the local companies and am going to try my best to create a ICT suite in the school. The primary school in question is Furze Platt (Pinkney's Green, Maidenhead). I recently bought SUSE 6.3 and am trying to load it on a P-100/16MB RAM/2 GB HDD (for now that is the best I can do..). I ran into a problem which installing with YAST2 (first CD). All I could see as the first screen was the top left quadrant of a screen. Is there some way I can make it show me the whole screen? In any case, I continued with YAST (second CD) and everything was fine until the loading of the packages aborted. When I re-started the machine the software offered to install the rest of the packages. At the end of this I noticed that it had several errors relating to it not having found some-symbolic-link-or-file-or-something. I continued anyways..... The server seems to work fine now. Except I can't seem to load the diald package via yast. Either that or there is something wrong with "locate". Running "locate diald" only seems to give me _one_ line "/usr/packages/...../diald". Surely something is wrong? I think something must be broken in the database that answers to the "locate" command. Any suggestions? There must be some way of updating it without having to re-load everything! Sorry to ramble on like this. Unfortunately, I am trying to learn this without any physical hand holding ;-). At least I am getting some "flying hours" racked up on Linux! Oh BTW, the ultimate idea is to run a network of around 35 PCs (W9x), 2 Laser Printers, a few color printers with Linux server(s) with SAMBA, Squid2. All this on any machine that I can get my hands on. Sometime in the near future I will also start fiddling with AUC. Anyone got any experience with it? Reading through a backlist of mails sent to me by Roger (Thank You), and there was one there asking to 'Hello' not 'Lurk' - so here we are. We being - Anthony Hogbin (Teacher ICT - using Linux 3/4 years); Clive More (Trust sidekick (technician) - using Linux 3/4 years). -of Cleeve Park School, SIDCUP, Kent We use it here for serving small clusters of machines with older PC's doing the donkey work, until we can get fibre down there, and also for personal projects (like a failover domain for pupil services (web/PDC) if the NT boxes go down).
