Would be nice to have around for all considering buying stuff. Single / dual / X-cpu systems Mainboard RAM Chipset All the info you'd like to add Plz let me/others know how you dealt with problems if you had any (And yes ... I'll probably buy a AMD64/Opteron myself in the near future) Johan

Been reasonably happy, though I can't get the Tyan System Management Daughter Cards to do anything useful under Linux. Also the Qlogic HBA seems to work under some kernels and not under others. Will probably be looking at a small cluster of duals or some quads soon. Mine is virtually the same as Dabe Murphy's Shuttle XPC SN85G4 (Small Form Factor) Athlon64 3200+ CPU nVidia nForce3 150 chipset (Flawless!) 250GB Seagate (I think) SATA HDD ATI Radeon 9600 (avoid ATI like the plague, it is load of garbage without the driver support) 2x512MB DDR400 RAM DVD+/-RW 5 in 1 card reader also standard, but a bit wobbly about recognising the card. Since 9.1 it has mounted manually reasonably reliably (but not 100%) Brother HL-1430 printer goes fine, and the USB does recognise this. It doesn't report running hot. I use SuSE 9.1 Professional. I started with 9.0 - had so much trouble with the SATA that I went and bought XP, and proceeded to have exactly the same problem. In the end I solved the SATA on 9.0 first, so XP has never been loaded and I've never missed it. There is No FDD on these machines. 9.1 has worked a treat and I love my little black beast except for the ATI card which will be replaced with a Radeon when sufficient cash and momentum develop. I use it for programming multiagent models using Eclipse (love it) and RePast, for writing my PhD using OpenOffice. Most of the time I use it for avoiding these two activities via Civilisation CTP and Creatures. Due to the PhD thing, it's pure standalone. No internet, no network connection at the moment, and no YOU. I really like using Linux and have had generally good experiences with SUSE. Sue Street

SuSE 9.1 Professional AMD Opteron 240 1.4GHz 64-bit Retail CPUs Tyan Tiger K8W S2875ANRF Dual Opteron Server Board PC2700 333MHz DDR ECC RAM - (4GB Total) Maxtor 6Y200M0 200GB 7200RPM 8MB SERIAL ATA HDs - (4) ATI Radeon 9200SE 64MB DDR 8x AGP w/ TV-Out Tagan TG480-U01 480w pwr supply. Topower TP134SAB Hot-swap SATA module. 3ware 9500S-8 Escalade SATA Controller. The only hassle I had was with the 3ware controller and the obvious problems suse has with its setup program (update disk portion) for loading modules on SMP systems at installation time. This is partly 3ware's fault because they could not get their module in the kernel source tree in time for the 9.1 release. The sata raid controller could not be used for a fresh install. I had to use an IDE disk to hold the OS then add the newly compiled module manually. The kernel-syms package had to be loaded for the 3ware module code to compile properly. The only thing I have left is to tear everything down and install clean to test if the 3ware module can handle a kernel update from YaST without breaking. Other than what's mentioned above I have had *no* problems but the machine is not in a production environment yet and isn't doing anything other than sitting there spinning its wheels. problem with 5 in 1 Cardbus in Compaq R3240US

Hi I have a Compaq R3240US laptop. I am running SuSe 9.1 64 bit on it. Most of the hardware are working fine but I am unable to access the 5 in 1 Card Reader (CardBus). I found that a driver named yanta is assigned to work with the Card bus ,but now I do not know how to access the Card reader. My guess is I have to mount it ,(like USA device or camera) , but how to do that. Please Help me TIA Anirban Biswas. -- If Bill Gates is the Devil then Linus Torvalds must be the Messiah.

Hi again. Thanks for your help. I tried using YOU to install the nvidia driver. Let me explain how it didn't work. My monitor has a resolution of 1400x1050, and this is how I like to work. But after I finish the YOU procedure for the instalation of the nvidia driver, the resolution was set to the lower value of 1024x768. Besides, the text console, even if it wasn't out of sync, was not satisfactory, it showed many regularly spaced white stripes. Wen I set the resolution up again to 1400x1050, I got again the syncing problems.
