Playing DVDs on AMD64 system

Has anyone managed to get any DVD playing software running properly under SuSE 9 for the AMD64? I've got an ASUS K8V Deluxe MB and an NVIDIA GF5200FX video card, for what that's worth. I've been trying, with little success, to compile a working version of the 'Ogle' DVD player, but am running into all sorts of dependency issues with RPMs, and missing library issues compiling from source. If someone else has gotten this working, I'd be interested in hearing exactly what RPMs/source files you used and what steps you followed. Hi, I've parsed the archives titles but have not found anybody speaking about MSI K8T Master 2 dual-opteron motherboard. Basically, I want to know if someone has tested this board with SuSE 9.1 or SuSE Server for AMD 64. Thanks for the information. Olivier.

One major problem is, the Suse 9.1 rescue mode is *missing the LVM drivers*. Now that my system is repaired, I just tried to boot in rescue mode and it doesn't work. It doesn't mount the LVM array, because it appears drm-mod is not present. If my diagnosis is correct, this is a serious oversight. Dvdauthor problems...

Has anyone else had success using the dvdauthor program (http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net) to create dvd menus? My efforts keep failing with the spumux program (part of dvdauthor) failing with: INFO: Locale=en_US.UTF-8 INFO: Converting filenames to UTF-8 ERR: Cannot convert UTF8 string 'buttonsone.png': Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character I've tried every variation of setting the Locale to UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1, etc but no luck... Using all the same software on a older AMD computer running a 32-bit version of linux, I have no problems... I don't know a lot about character encodings, so I'm a bit lost here and am hoping someone else with an AMD64 has gotten these programs working with SuSE linux. For what it's worth, I've tracked down the portion of the code that fails (and produces the above error) to be related to a call to the 'iconv' program. Any clues, hints, virtual kicks-to-the-head, etc would be appreciated.... Larry Prikockis

Application issues

I have been using SuSE 9.1 on a Dual Opteron system, and I have run into a few problems with some applications. I just want to see if these are issues experienced by others or if its something in my setup. GAIM : * cannot connect to yahoo OpenOffice : * Locks the system hard. Requires a reboot * This is not the version that SuSE ships, but one that i had downloaded and installed on an nfs share. I can try to install the SuSE supplied version on a local drive if that helps. Java Applications : * Lock the system hard, Requires a reboot * Using the latest sun JDK (1.4.2_04) and also the Blackdown 32 bit versions cause the same thing. It works fin for a while and then the system locks up and i have to press reset. * Applications tried : - eclipse M9 - oXygen XML Editor 4.0 * small java programs that i have written work fine, but then they are not long running. FVWM : * I was not able to move the windows of some java applications ( again eclipse) nor of OpenOffice. I tried the SuSE supplied version, the latest 2.5.10 version and finally got things back to normal with the 2.4.18 version. I have also installed the 32bit verson on my laptop and i haven't seen any of these problems. I know probably none of these are SuSE specific, but just want to see if other have encountered this and if they have solved the problem. My system specs : MSI K8T Master FAR mb 2 Opteron 240s 2G memory 1 SATA drive (system installed here) 1 IDE DVD-RW 2 IDE HD (work area) nVidia graphics card The system is not a dual boot. Also, the SATA drive shows up as /dev/hda. Should it be /dev/hda or /dev/sda? I haven't had any problems with the drive aside froma lot of annoying messages in the log file : hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } But i see these for all drive but the DVD-RW and from what i have read it appears i can ignore these. My SuSE Professional 9.1 AMD64 experience so far

Hi all, As promised, here is a summary of my experience so far with SuSE Professional 9.1 AMD64. Best regards ---ooo--- Installation. 1. Default installation died with a segfault after installing software for about 20 minutes. Tried again with "apm=off acpi=off" and installation then succeeded through to initial boot. Used "apm=off acpi=off" on initial boot. Connection to YOU succeeded. During remainder of installation the system abruptly rebooted. Starting YaST after reboot caused another abrupt reboot. Rebooted using "noapic agp=off acpi=off apm=off". Ran YaST in Curses mode, and selected YOU. Updated software and updated the kernel to latest 2.6.4. [Stability problems have so far disappeared with 2.6.5 kernel. No longer need "noapic agp=off acpi=off apm=off".] 2. Display blinking and shuddering in framebuffer mode during bootup. [This seems to have stopped after I updated the kernel to 2.6.5.] 3. Installing TrueType fonts apparently hangs. This initially failed. I have /home on a separate partition. Before installing SuSE 9.1, I renamed /home to /homer (just in case). During installation I used a different partition for /. After installation I updated fstab to mount /homer and check, then renamed /homer to /home in fstab and remounted. This had all worked when I reinstalled SuSE 9.0, but failed for SuSE 9.1. Why? SuSE 9.1 has renumbered the users. My userid had been numbered 500 under SuSE 9.0 but SuSE 9.1 used 1000. Consequently, when I switch back to the old /home partition it did not work, because it did not recognize user 500 as me. I tried fixing this by changing the number of my userid to 500. This almost worked, but my previous logins had left files and directories owned by user 1000 in various places, especially in /tmp. I had to delete these before kdm and KDE would work correctly. Now KDE 3.2.2 works well. ---ooo--- Fonts. Anti-aliasing seems rougher than it was with SuSE 9.0. This could be because I am not yet running the nVIDIA graphics driver. Maybe sub-pixel hinting does not work in XFree86 4.3.99? Testing the segfault problems with GluCat. GluCat still segfaulted with kernel 2.6.4-54.5. Updated to KOTD, which is >uname -a Linux linfinit 2.6.5-7.61cvs20040528150002-default #1 Fri May 28 19:04:18 UTC 2004 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux GluCat has so far not segfaulted with this kernel. ---ooo--- 32-bit software. Maple will not install. Matlab will not run. This is a showstopper, but I will try to fix it, if possible, rather than revert to SuSE 9.0. ---ooo--- Other oddities so far. Sometimes Konqueror response seems sluggish for no apparent reason, eg. CPU usage is low. ---ooo--- Hardware: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, on a Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP motherboard, which uses the NVIDIA nForce3 150, plus an MSI FX5700-TD AGP graphics card, which uses the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700.

After installing 9.1, can no longer install Maple 9.0.3

Hi all, I have now finally obtained and installed SUDE LINUX Profressional 9.1, and am now re-installing some 32-bit software. The Maple 9.0.3 installer linux32 ./LinuxUpgrade.bin gives the error message: Error occurred during initialization of VM Unable to load native library: /tmp/install.dir.10080/Linux/resource/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference I tried various combinations of export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1; linux32 ./LinuxUpgrade.bin export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.21; linux32 ./LinuxUpgrade.bin with no luck. Hi Richard, The system you are referring to is the 1u rackmount 325. The new system referenced by Ricardo is a new Dual Opteron desk-side unit called the Intellistation A Pro. This station can come with a choice of Nvidia cards(Quadro Pro 1100 or 3000), U320 SCSI, Firewire onboard, 1Gb Ethernet onboard, DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW. I custom built a dual 246 using Tyan S2885, which is a great workstation, very fast. I have 3 PCI-x SCSI adapters on it and all work great, though a little fussy about PCI scan order on boot. I now have 1.5TB on the system and I/O performance is exceptional as compared with the older Xeon I had. If you are looking for a workstation, either this board, or the IBM Intellstation A Pro are great workhorses. We had the same decision to make last November/December when buying our application server (Java web apps). We liked the IBM, but the kicker was its 1U rack case only had space for two disk drives. It was certainly more expensive, but not unreasonably so, given IBM's (usually) excellent support. You had to buy an external disk array to expand storage. The lack of drive slots caused us to go with a Tyan Thunder S2880 based system. Although we have built many ADM/Intel boxes, the Opteron/AMD64 is new enough that we decided to let Monarch Computing build it for us. Their assembly/burnin charge is absolutely a bargain - around US $65 if I remember correctly. Given the issues we had with RAID and the SCSI drives, we are very glad we did. We tried the more recent S2882 with buildin SCSI/RAID but it would not work with SLES 8. All in all, Monarch's support has been excellent. I will probably put together our next Opteron test server. However it will be pretty basic compared to our production servers. Still, if you can afford the IBM, I would go for it - you know the video and everything is integrated and works.
