I found the Opteron to be the best all around two-way and four-way database platform for Oracle. They have proven to be rock solid performers and very stable on SLES 8 I have two 4-way 844 and 846 Celestica Servers (From the company formerly known as Racksaver, AKA Verari) 8GB of RAM Two HP 6400 RAID Controllers HP Storageworks We are running the AMD64 version of 9i with great success as well as the 32-bit version on the 64bit version SLES8. I haven't had any issues with hardware configuration with these servers and Suse. Our DBA's and report writers are astounded by the performance vs. our old Sparc boxes. We also have several two-way 246's from Verari as well. Unfortunatly, they are running Windows and MSSQL. :( Our Win software developers love the Opterons performace. (I attempted to show them the light with Suse and Mono. NIC is built-in GB. Haven't tried the operations you speak of. I have a 7xxx series 3ware sata controller and it installed and ran primo so once the escalade series developers get caught up in the 64bit arena I am sure those will play nice too. We have three clusters, the first two purchased a year ago. The small one is 20 nodes: - MSI K8D Maaster MB - Dual Opteron 242 (1.6GHz) - 4 GB RAM - Two WDC 2500 - 1U rackmount chassis (Chenbro, I think) The large one is 152 nodes, same MB, CPUs, and disks, only 2GB RAM. - 1U Appro chassis The new one is 160 nodes, Opteron 250s, 4 GB RAM, and same disks, - Appro blade chassis. We also have a sprinkling of development nodes using the 244 CPUs, some of which are using Adaptec 39320 HBAs to connect to RAIDs for NFS service. (I would use Coda, but our Solaris clients do not have that.) These systems are used for processing tropospheric emissions data in an attempt to retrieve chemical consituents in the air. They are not used in the normal sense of "clusters"; we just run a lot of independent parallel jobs. eyc

If you're adventuous you can compile the kernel modules for this yourself and try if they work for you (set CONFIG_ATM to "m") Not all parts of ATM may be bad on 64bit. But we didn't have any way to test PPP over ATM, so we just disabled it. Please only attempt this when you already have basic knowledge on how to recompile a kernel. -Andi

Amd64 internet not connecting

I've install Suse 9.1 onto my machine but am having problems when I try to connect to the internet. I get the error message linux pppd[4602]: socket(AF_ATMPVC, SOCK_DGRAM, 0): Address family not supported by protocol linux pppd[4602]: Failed to open 0.38: Address family not supported by protocol Can anyone help please ?

Hi, I have the same stresses: In December I bought the AMD64 and SuSE 9.0 SuSE wouldn't install and it took three months of very poor support to discover that there was a problem. So I lashed out and bought SuSE 9.1 This version installs, but... I have been unable to connect to the internet ( had to buy another PC for that) And nobody seems to be able to advise me on how to configure my system so that I can code with X Window or Xt. It is nearly 11 months of hassle. Anybody recommend SuSE? Colin Carter
