Örn, Im not the original on this thread, But I too have been unable to get my Internet connection to work under SuSE 9.1 on my AMD 64 box. My first guess would be that the original poster has a winmodem and needs to install drivers specific to the winmodem. However, I do know that an issue does exist with SuSE 9.1 and perfectly good controller based modems. My modem is a pci modem from Actiontec. This is a controller based modem, not a winmodem This modem works fine under Gentoo , debian, and Win XP on the same machine for all uses. Please note that I said my internet connection does not work under SuSE. The actiontec pci modem is recognized and set up correctly under Yast. I can use the modem with minicom with no problems. However, the normal Yast set up connection and the Kinternet front end fail to establish a ppp connection with my isp. I had opened a ticket with SuSE when I first installed 9.1, but my support time has long since past. Both SuSE and I have failed to solve the problem directly. I play with things like the acpi setting and lcp-max configure settings every now and then, but I have not yet found the conflict. Everything works well in other distros, and I have configured a script to work from minicom to log me in to my isp and negotiate a connection using expect for when I use SuSE. I have tried an external modem, and it does not show the same errors, but I need my serial ports for other devices. Since I have a script working, I am not in desperate need of a solution. If I ever figure it out I will e-mail SuSE with my original help ticket number and let them know what I find. I suppose in the end my problem could have been memory or something, but I just didn't want to spend the time debugging it. My system wasn't functioning in 64-bit or 32-bit mode. Eventually I went back to the Intel and all is good. I'll wait a couple years to do the 64-bit upgrade. I never could find any pre-built rpm's for all the stuff needed, had to compile everything from source and had tons of problems getting all the right 'configure switches' to make it work. I went months after getting my AMD until I finally got it working, it was a very frustrating experience. Lots of googling, lots of posts to groups like this, and lots of trial and error. I agree with Einar, I too would recommend SuSE's 64-bit Linux. We have been running SLES-8 for some months now on a dual Opteron system with no problems what so ever. Having said that, I did have issues in the beginning with corrupted file systems. My issue turned out to be one of the most basic, my VAR sold me a hardware solution that was not SLES 8 compliant, my RAID array was SATA. SATA support, to my knowledge, didn't appear in SLES until 9. Since the VAR replaced all of the SATA with PATA it has run like a dream. I have a support contract with SuSE, which was used extensively in configuring the machine. The support personnel were excellent to work with, both in their attitude and the knowledge they provided. The responses to my questions were always prompt and provided me with the information that I needed to get through my issues. Because of these reasons I do continue to recommend SuSE's SLES for all of our Linux needs, including Oracle servers. screen out of sync

Hello! I have an Asus L5000 laptop with a nVidia GeForce FX graphics card and things are running reasonably well. However, wen I press [Ctrl][Alt][F1] to escape the X environment into a text-only interface, my screen gets out of sync! Does anybody know of a simple fix to this? I wonder what my problem is, then. I turned SATA off. Is there any particular setting you tweaked in the BIOS? Did you upgrade the BIOS? Did you do anything different? As another poster mentioned, the only issues I've had are compiling certain packages 64 bit. All the SuSE provided software on the DVD works fine out of the box. Getting DVD stuff to work 64 bit is a royal pain. Certain things flat out aren't available, like a 64 bit flash player. Other than the software issues, I've had no problem at all. hello- I have a lot of trouble setting up a nfs-client: I want to mount a filesystem on a SME-server with nfs. But whatever i do i get this messages ; mount: RPC: Program not registered I dont understand it our windows can easyly reach the filesystem on the server. When i try to use yast , it cannot find any nfs-server on the lan. More information on my dual-boot problem. I first installed the 64bit . Since I used the default settings it installed in the MBR. Next I installed the 32bit . This also went into the MBR. After this I could only see the 32 bit install. I used the install/repair to get the 64bit visable at boot. I edited menu.lst and added the 32bit install . image = /boot/vmlinuz ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: Linux32### label = Linux32 initrd = /boot/initrd optional root = /dev/hda7 vga = 0x317 append = "splash=silent console=tty0 desktop resume=/dev/hda5 showopts" When I try to boot this the log shows /dev/hda7 but acts as if it is still loading the 64bit. uname shows x86_64 and I get lots of load errors that go along with this. When you install the loader defaults to MBR. There are other choices /dev/hda* . There is no explanation of why or when to use these options. There are also additional selections on saving to MBR and also no real explanation of when to use them. Both installs are really there but I seem to be able to boot only one of them.

I did install it as standard x86 on my setup and it worked like a dream. It's just the 64-bit I'm having trouble with. I had a few hangups here, on my system ... first was due to the BIOS, which was solved when I upgraded. Had to do with DMA, which need to be or the system will be significantly slower. Second, I've had a few apparent freezes ... which are mostly the system just locking itself for a few seconds, or longer and than coming back to life. Otherwise, SuSE 9.1 has worked marvelously for me since it came out. My system is an MSI NEO, AMD64 3000+ with 512Mb memory. After reading a bit, I came across that a possible scenario for hangups is the power supply. If it's flaky, it can cause power drop to the cpu which will stop working properly ... something to look out for, if you built your system on an older box, with new Mobo + Cpu.
