Re: [suse-amd64] Giving up on 64-bit Linux for now

Örn, Im not the original on this thread, But I too have been unable to get my Internet connection to work under SuSE 9.1 on my AMD 64 box. My first guess would be that the original poster has a winmodem and needs to install drivers specific to the winmodem. However, I do know that an issue does exist with SuSE 9.1 and perfectly good controller based modems. My modem is a pci modem from Actiontec. This is a controller based modem, not a winmodem This modem works fine under Gentoo , debian, and Win XP on the same machine for all uses. Please note that I said my internet connection does not work under SuSE. The actiontec pci modem is recognized and set up correctly under Yast. I can use the modem with minicom with no problems. However, the normal Yast set up connection and the Kinternet front end fail to establish a ppp connection with my isp. I had opened a ticket with SuSE when I first installed 9.1, but my support time has long since past. Both SuSE and I have failed to solve the problem directly. I play with things like the acpi setting and lcp-max configure settings every now and then, but I have not yet found the conflict. Everything works well in other distros, and I have configured a script to work from minicom to log me in to my isp and negotiate a connection using expect for when I use SuSE. I have tried an external modem, and it does not show the same errors, but I need my serial ports for other devices. Since I have a script working, I am not in desperate need of a solution. If I ever figure it out I will e-mail SuSE with my original help ticket number and let them know what I find. Séan On Mon, 20 Sep 2004 17:44:47 +0200, Örn Hansen wrote:

Hi, I have been unable to connect to the internet ( had to buy another PC for that)
Duh? That doesn't sound right, somehow ... what is the nature of your internet connection, and your problem?

One problem there is that the smartmodem drivers cannot get compiled with 64 bit, they contain some 32 bit object code. And some HP / Compaq amd64 notebooks have such a smartmodem built in. However I use PCMCIA modems, which do not need special drivers, with success. Regards, Matt

DON'T GIVE UP ON 64BIT LINUX!!! SuSE wasn't right for me. Switch to Gentoo. I have been using Gentoo with no problems for quite some time now. My purchased DVD of SuSE is collecting dust on my bookshelf. http://www.gentoo.org And, if you get stuck, theres plenty of help on IRC irc.us.freenode.net #gentoo #gentoo-amd64 AND SUSE FOLKS, if this angers you, then remove me from your mailing lists. I have requested to be removed several times to no avail.

It does not anger me - but should I really unsubscribe you? Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE Linux AG, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I'm only ask me, why you didn't remove yourself? Is your mother in holiday? Try this: mailto:suse-amd64-unsubscribe-chron=seznam.cz@suse.com reply the answer and you#re gone. -- Ciao Marco, registered GNU/Linux-User 313353

Ok, have you tried upping up the pppd debug, and if so what does it say? Does it establish a connection and then hang up, or does it fail to establish the connection. If it does, what was the last handshake the two pppd's were trying to establish?
