[opensuse-artwork] State of 12.3 Branding - A Plea for 13.1

Hi All, As you can see in the published Release timeline for 12.3, the openSUSE Artwork Deadline was Thursday 24th Jan http://turing.suse.de/~coolo/opensuse_12.3/ As of 5PM UTC on Wed 30th Jan (ie almost a week later) the state of our team todo list (on wiki here: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_Todo) was as follows: Urgent Tasks: Grub2 - Work not started gfxboot - Work not started YaST - Work not started Removal of application branding - Work not started Plymouth - complete, only polishing required (tittiatcoke) KDM - complete (MM) ksplash - complete (MM) kdelibs - complete (sumski) SUSEgreeter - complete (sumski) Less Urgent: GDM - Done (ilmehtar) GNOME dynamic wallpaper - Done, polishing still required (ilmehtar) Grub, gfxboot and YaST are the first 3 things users to 12.3 will see. In order to avoid the horrifically embarrassing situation of these key parts of 12.3 being released with 12.2's branding still in place, I hurriedly through things together and got them submitted. I'm not happy with how they look, and I'm hoping that we can play on the sympathies of the release team to speedily accept any polishing from me and anyone else over the next few days so 12.3 is not a complete artistic trainwreck. This is my plea for 13.1 to the whole team. Please do not let this happen again. We have this list full of people who are apparently keen to contribute to the artwork and branding of openSUSE, but when the time comes, we never seem to get the goods. Unlike previous releases, I do not think this can be explained as 'we did not know what to do'. A great deal of effort has been put in to explain the current situation, the current requirements, and simple ToDo lists have been put together.. and yet still we find ourselves in this situation. I've heard the complaints that people like me 'monopolise' the process, but even when I step back, do my best to inform what needs to be done and leave it to others to do it, we find ourselves in this situation.. I feel that far too often, openSUSE is relying on hackers like myself, tigerfoot & tittiatcoke to pull things out of the bag at the last minute, and given these people are not artists (nor wish to be) I think we'd all accept than the end result isn't as artistic as we'd like, or as openSUSE deserves. I don't think anyone likes this current situation, so we need the Artwork team producing art that can be used in the functions of the distribution. SUSE may be hiring a Graphic Designer to work on openSUSE, but when they do, I want them to find a functioning artwork team for them to collaborate with, not just a bunch of hackers desperate for relief from doing something which comes unnaturally to them. [opensuse-artwork] Printing things for FOSDEM

Heya, Alberto (SUSE employee at the openSUSE team) has tested printing some of the poster proposals as well as the folding cube and tux that Carlos proposed. I then had a chat with Agustin about the budget possibilities. The results: * ChamaleonBust_white - PERFECT http://wstaw.org/m/2013/01/21/ChameleonBust_white.png Needs feedback - it's simple to print but I'm guessing nobody likes it much... Should we bother with this one? https://picasaweb.google.com/104830275042059445407/OpenSUSECube02 * cube - Colors are good, the size is really small on a4 Needs updating for oSC and (later) for openSUSE 12.3 ;-) http://paste.opensuse.org/60269859 * tux - small, colors ok. size needs to be a3 like cube. Needs a bit of updating: lighter image, smoother? We can print everything and we have budget for say 2x10 big and 2x20 small posters and a nice bunch of folding things (say 100 or so of each). What we need now is final versions of everything to be printed by SUNDAY, Jan 27 24:00. Carlos, if you can update the cube and tux things with an oSC design, maybe andi and/or others have ideas on how and what - then we can print those. I do need SVG versions in A3/A4 so we can generate the right PDF's in terms of size and CMYK etc requirements... Andi, Poster4 is perfect so we can print those. I saw some want it more greenish and all - you fight it out and send me a SVG on A3 format by the deadline and I'll get it printed ;-) Tell me if we should print the white one. For a postcard I think the 'summer is coming' from Carlos is incredibly cool: http://wstaw.org/m/2013/01/24/Summer-is-coming_05.jpg It's black and white, I'm sure we can print it. But it, too, needs svg... And postcard size. So my proposal is: * Andi finishes and sends the poster he designed to me * Carlos talks to others here and works with them to update the folding thingies with oSC artwork. Separate openSUSE 12.3 artwork versions and a new OBS one we keep for later :D * Carlos cleans up the summer-is-coming and gets me a SVG of that for postcards * I make sure it all gets printed * we have a big, virtual grouphug at FOSDEM about this :D What about it, can we make oSC promo kick ass at FOSDEM? /Jos

Jos, What about the recurrent problem that meetings and discussions are being carried out, often with decisions being made, without the participation of the actual contributors putting stuff in the distribution? This Saturday for example is terrible for me, given I'm tied up with other stuff - I don't expect the world to revolve around me, but I would think as one of those more knowledgeable about the Release process, it would have been nice if I could have had a say about the scheduling so I could contribute. Heya, I know you're all busily working - I've seen the threads on the 12.3 distro artwork and the 12.3 promo things like banners. I think it's important to have a clear idea about what needs to be done. That is especially important not only for the release of the distro, but also for the hackaton we have next month: to make sure we don't forget things and to make sure we don't spend time discussing instead of working there. On the distro side, Richard has posted a good start of a list. From the promo side, I'd be happy to help make a list of some things (but that would need help from other promo people and all of you - I don't know all the stuff we need). To kickstart things, I created this wiki page: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_Todo I tried to add some things on the promo side there as well as what Richard posted, corrections and additions are welcome as I didn't add the status to the things discussed here recently. If this is the wrong approach - please, just change or remove the wiki page. It's mostly that I made this page after seeing mails with "todo" as title and because I think it would be extremely helpful for the hackaton :D Might be a good idea to use a meeting or two to work on these lists... [opensuse-artwork] Meeting Scheduled

A meeting has been scheduled for Saturday 9pm (CET) in #opensuse-artwork @ freenode Due to the proximity of the release, only crucial issues and progress only, as to not derail release thus this meeting is for progress reports and to show what is happening and to ask for any assistance (so should be a short meeting) to organise efforts and know exactly what is going on and when should be finished for testing. Then it will be open floor for anyone to ask for clarification and discuss any issues on their minds related to release, however final decisions will be made on the ML. Now I must stress this meeting/gathering is going ahead no matter what and at this time, no changes will be made and any mails related to this one will be ignored. Any changes can be asked for at the meeting, I would like to ask all to please attend. That is very cool! The work done can be exported as well or items from other works can be imported in. I also like the function that contributors can be highlighted in different colors which makes it easy to see who wrote what. I still like the comments feature on Google Docs though which makes it nice to keep the page clean and allow others to come in and make comments on the various areas of document. I understand how some people don't like the idea of using Google Docs for whatever reason but, as far as I know, The Document Foundation has not produced a full web based version of their Libre suite. Sharing documents does not require any passwords or account set up. As the instructions state, the collaboration design was set up particularly with the kinds of work we do as well as students or global operations. People are scattered all over the place and rather than email documents around, we can follow a link to a document to work on it together from anywhere. [opensuse-artwork] Introduction

Hi again. As promised, here is a short intruduction: My name is Marcus Moeller, I was born 1976 in Germany and am a Free Software Contributor since the mid-90's. I've started using SUSE Linux in 1994 and contributed to the openSUSE project since the beginning. (I even contributed to SUSE before, in form of offering Xfce third-party packages ;)) In the past I have used Photoshop, but since they exist, I migrated to Gimp and Inkscape. I am still learning, of course. I have created most of the graphics that are used on the wiki, contributed to the Connect CSS and several other aspects of the infra. 11.3 was the first version where I contributed core distro design, continuing to 12.1, 12.2 and now 12.3. openSUSE is not the only free software project I am involved in. As Swiss Country Coordinator I was responsible for the FSFE for quite a while and am still activly contributing. I did distro design for other distributions like CentOS and am activly contributing to Fedora (but not in form of art), as I have to maintain Fedora and Red Hat infrastructure at my day job. This would mean, if you are new to opensuse-artwork, please describe your background, your skills, what you have done so far in form of art or theming/packaging. This would make it easier for us to welcome new contributors. And just to repeat, this list is not meant for everyone stating his/her personal taste or commenting on random threads. We have work that needs to be done and need YOUR help to do so. If it's okay for everyone, I would add these rules to the wiki. I would also make the start and write down a few notes about myself, even if I am a long term contributor. I just upgraded to Beta 1 and it looks nice. =) Let me dodge the desktop background discussion by assuming it stays as-is... in which case I have a suggestion for the matching Plymouth splash. It looks a bit odd that there is a big geeko (from the 12.2 splash) and now a small geeko on the vine - the small geeko doesn't feel right to me, he seems to distract from the big one. Maybe for the Plymouth theme, the small geeko could be removed from the vine. Then he'd show up only for the real background. (An alternative would be to remove the vine entirely - the splash would still look good.) Hi, all, I have two technical questions about GDM Greeter theming. I found GDM's really pool documented, the only tutorial I can use is from here: http://projects.gnome.org/gdm/docs/2.16/thememanual.html But it only tells you what the elements are and doesn't tell you how to position them. So after a few bloody trials, I made this: https://zh.opensuse.org/File:Greeter.png It explains how the positioning in GDM is like. There're still two question left: 1. what is a "flexi" mode? It sounds like "remote login things" to me. But what it is actually? I can't find anything useful on Google. 2. Can I design a "float" layout like CSS in GDM? Bruno once told me I have to specially care the userlist, because it might not be enabled. So I want to make a two column design, userlist is at the left side. and username/password is at the right side. If userlist is disabled, the username/password will automatically be centered.(one column) That is very common usage in HTML/CSS. but in GDM, I found even if the userlist is disable, GDM doesn't release the space taken. So anyone know how to do this? or how to better place userlist? Hi All, I was debating posting on the thread about regular meetings - Marcus and Bryen have successfully conveyed my feelings on the topic, but I do accept there is one thing that could be improved upon to help people contribute. So in the spirit of my other recent mailings, here is what I consider needs to be done before 12.3 is ready, with loose priorities to explain the importance of each task, and then a few other action items which I know the community has discussed. Some of these tasks may already be in progress by others, but regardless, if you feel you can do something, do it. If you do it best, it'll end up in the distribution, if you don't, you'll end up learning from the process, and that's even better! Enough talk, we've only got a few weeks before 12.3 needs to be out of the door and right now we are way behind. Where possible, I'll be including the links to the appropriate place for the work to be committed to. Good luck, and thank you! High Priority - The following tasks are essential and must be completed as soon as possible for 12.3 to be a successful release 1. Plymouth Branding - We've talked about ideas for this for 6 months, we no longer have time for further discussion, someone needs to put something together and get it into factory - and hopefully with enough time that we can perfect it afterwards https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/plymouth 1a. Do we still need splashed branded for people who might not be using plymouth? if so, this needs to be done too! https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/splashy 2. Grub2 branding - the rough edges in the Grub2 branding in 12.2 really earned the artwork team black marks in the eyes of many of our users, and with the exception of me, I don't think anyone on this list looked at the problem - and I was unable to resolve it without a fundamental rebranding which I considered too dramatic for a maintenance release. So lets avoid that and get Grub2 branded and in factory *now* so if similar problems appear again we can get them fixed before release this time https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/boot/grub2 3. KDM/simpledm (KDE login screen) - Given the question about which will be the default DM/login screen for KDE, we need to make sure both KDM and simpledm are branded properly. Needs to be updated https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/ksplash-qml 4. YaST branding - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/yast 5. SUSEgreeter - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated. (Might be derived from something else as I see it in my working folder but not in github) 6. xfce splash - Still using 12.2 design in factory. Needs to be updated, or treated the same way as the application splash screens below. https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/xfce 7. Application splash screens - gimp ,libreoffice, etc - the team decided that we'd no longer be branding these packages, but no one has done the following work required to make this a viable option 7a. Altering of the relevant package dependancies in OBS and/or the openSUSE default installation patterns in https://github.com/openSUSE/patterns to make sure the -opensuse branding packages are not installed for relevant applications 7b. If we're not going to keep -opensuse branding as an option then removal of the gimp parts of the opensuse-Branding package and the build process in https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and removal of the libreoffice-opensuse branding package from Factory 8. GNOME Wallpaper changing throughout the day - If we're going to use this nice GNOME feature, someone needs to make the variations for morning/night (or other time periods if they want to get really creative) and they need to be put in the appropriate place in https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3/gnome and the xml files edited as required. Alternatively 8a. Removal of the variable GNOME wallpaper from https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/blob/12.3/Makefile and appropriate changes made to the openSUSE-branding packages so GNOME has the same static default wallpaper as KDE Medium Priority - Less important, but still needs to be looked at 1. Improvements to the grow design https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3 2. Tweaking of everything accomplished already and everything above once it's done to make this version of openSUSE as pretty as possible https://github.com/openSUSE/branding/tree/12.3 3. The elements are all easy to move, which is of critical important when you think we currently support 4 different aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 16:10 and 5:4), all of which often require subtle differences in order to make a design 'look' right Simple cropping is NOT good enough in most cases, and we need to make sure we're doing our best to support EVERY resolution out there at every aspect ratio that makes sense - that's hard to do unless you're making Rasters at what I would consider to be 'stupid' resolutions (3000+ in each dimension) the ease of managing, modifying, and reusing the elements is also important when wanting to create marketing materials based on the distribution branding - yes, this is something we keep on saying we dont want to do any more, but in the absence of a version neutral marketing artwork, then we're still likely to keep on basing stuff on the Distribution version, and so this benefit of SVG's really comes into play It's also a simple case of flexibility - some applications require SVG, most support Raster, by creating the core artwork in SVG we can easily convert to Raster when needed, but use SVG when possible - this doesn't work the other way around, it's not viable to convert Raster art into proper vectors (and no, embedding raster in SVG's does not count) I hope that clears things up PS. that readme file I linked provides further info for your other question about Workflow -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner(a)opensuse.org

You are discussing replacements for Fifth Leg font and you wrote in discussion[1] that it has been already decided to replace it, can I ask as non-artwork guy, what is wrong with Fifth Leg? Apart from some people being bored with it... Maybe you can just point to the original discussion and decision about the change? Don't take me wrong, I'm really curious although I admit that I like Fifth Leg and I think that it is something that helps us differentiate... I've had private conversations at conferences with people like Andi to explain to them the situation and educate them, in the hope that I'd have less work to do and the community would be better for it Heck, I even stood back and withdrew myself from all -artwork affairs for a fair while, in the hope that my absence would give the room for those who feel as Andi do to step up and work to their own way and here we are, January with a To Do list a mile long If you want to discuss process & planning, I have no way of stopping you, but this thread, and the message I have been trying to convey in all of my recent posts to this mailing list is that we've had such discussions for months and they've got us no where Enough talk and pissing time up the wall. We don't have time to plan or produce pretty procedures for others to follow, we need to *produce*, or else openSUSE 12.3 will not be finished. If you want to contribute, pick something off that stupidly long to do list and get productive. I'm doing everything I can to help with that, such as pointing people in the direction of each individual part of GitHub and watching this list as closely as I can to provide any advice, while doing my best to tackle what I can from that list. Hi all. As the 12.3 release date gets closer, we should focus on preparing the artwork, now. From what I can see, we got proposals from Victor: http://paste.opensuse.org/44822206 and the one Ivan, Richard and I was working on: http://marcusmoeller.ch/share/oS/12_3/grow_05.png The latter has been prepared to work well with the produkt-based Plasma theme that is in testing in K:D:F and Factory right now. There are already a lot of submissions on the flickr page, but from what I can see, at least the non-photographic designs, does not fullfil our logo guidelines. The photos could of course be bundled to a supplementary wallpaper package. (who will do the work?) I would like to suggest to push the above two proposals to factory and continue working on it. We would also gain more feedback this way. Is that okay for you? [opensuse-artwork] Regular Meetings Proposal

Given recent discussions on the course and understanding that the artwork team should do/not do and the many suggestions from our members for extra communication between us, there has been ideas a proposals in the past for holding regular meetings in our team. I would like to do this because it helps very much, even if we don't have much to discuss, it helps in making sure that we are all on the same page and also provide help for others. Extra coordination can bring better results and keep our contributors on schedule for release artwork or marketing requests. Meetings are also a public event that people can attend on IRC. Work to be done after them would go as a summary email on the list and we could be more clear about our efforts. What do you think? every 1 week, every 2 weeks? monthly? Etc.
