[opensuse-artwork] SCaLE 11x Banner help?

Hey everyone, Those of us involved with working the openSUSE booth for SCaLE 11x 2013 had the great idea for a custom banner for the booth... one problem though... we don't have a design, and non of us are skilled in computer graphics. If there is anyone who could help us design a Southern California themed banner, that would be very helpful. Thanks, -- Drew Adams Member & Ambassador, openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Drew, SCaLE Design Mailing List are closed. In other words we can't even see their communication. To make banner design that can be produced in any size artwork guys have to make it as a vector graphic .svg file. Current logo is a small bitmap image: http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/sites/all/themes/custom/ui_toolkit/img/scale11... They don't scale. After some search I found that font is Kredit Back + some other rounded for small upper "a". Kredit Back comes with license that is not OSS, but also not very restrictive: http://typodermicfonts.com/pages/license It can be downloaded from some links offered on above site. There is a Troy, the SCaLE mascot. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/162474/SCALE10x-Website/troy.svg Is that still considered mascot, that is another question. I hope this will help those that will take on a task. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Rajko, Thank you for your help. I must apologize however, as I fear that in my attempt to keep my email brief i sacraficed a bit of clarity. You see, I do not want to make a SCaLE themed banner but rather an openSUSE banner that is Southern California themed... I don't really have too much in mind other than using some imagery that is commonly associated with Southern California (example: Geeko wearing flip flops sitting under a palm tree... perhaps modify this image with a palm tree replacing the sign, and a nice sunset over the ocean: http://en.opensuse.org/File:Future.png). One thing I would love to have on the banner is the words "openSUSE Project" as the main focus on the banner.... perhaps even include some logos from openQA, Connect, OBS and such... if it doesn't look over crowded by doing so. I really want it to feel like an openSUSE banner but showing people that the Southern California region of the community is active, growing, and proud! Buildasign.com offers a 3ft x 8ft custom banner for about $50. I hope that helps clarify what I am trying to do. -- Drew Adams Member & Ambassador, openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Drew, Good to see you continuing to put energy into the preparations for SCaLE. I'm sure it will remain awesome thanks to your participation and leadership. If I may make a suggestion, you will get a faster turnaround response to your design request if you give some specific ideas of your vision. "Southern California-themed" is still rather broad. For example, maybe you have a vision of Geeko sitting on a hammock between two palm trees, or a vision of Geeko roller-blading down Venice Beach. Or Geeko walking the red carpet in sunglasses at a Hollywood movie premiere, and the fans along the velvet rope are all hackergotchis from Planet openSUSE. The more you give a direction of the concept you want and what you want to evoke to booth visitors, the easier it will be for an artist to crank out what it is you want in a very short period of time. Also, don't know if I gave the link before, but we've been printing our banners in the U.S. at Banners On The Cheap. Quality is very good, good pricing and fast delivery. http://www.bannersonthecheap.com/ The banner you and I were using for the past year was a 4 foot tall x 8 foot wide banner. If I were to do it again, I would actually split the design into 2-3 banners and hang them all vertically like a mosaic next to each other. FYI: Banners are printed on vinyl with screen printing. That means you only need up to 100dpi quality images. And because of the screen printing, you can actually take a smaller sized image and stretch it into the upload box on the website and it will still look great. But if you want high-detail imagery, don't do it on vinyl banners. Just my two cents! Bryen, Thank you so much for your input on this... I don't think I even knew about bannersonthecheap.com. I do realize that in my attempt to keep my email brief it was not very clear in what I had in mind. Though, I must admit that anything that incorporates Geeko into a scene that uses commonly associated imagery from Southern California, would be great. (example: Geeko pressing his hands into cement with a crowd of flashing cameras around him... or any of the ideas that you tossed out). I think the one we go with may be dictated by what the person creating the image feels their skills will permit them to do best... perhaps I am wrong by that, but I am not a computer graphics person. Perhaps they are equally as easy or difficult to do? I really can't say. -- Drew Adams Member & Ambassador, openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

I think the Geeko pressing hands in cement is a very cool idea. It certainly lends to the "have a lot of fun" feeling that we try to project to the masses. However, I should point out, from a marketing perspective, you want to create something that a) draws people visually to the booth and b) evokes what it is you want the booth to accomplish. Only you and your organization team have that awareness, not the artist. You are the one who has an agenda and plans the materials. As for "up to the artist" that's true but only to an extent. It is still your booth and you have final say because it is part of the overall booth. Also, do not underestimate the artwork team, they are very versatile and able to take concept to delivery. It may not end up exactly like you asked for in the beginning, but the clearer your goals are in the beginning, the more representive the artist's work will be. For example, I asked for a web banner to promote the openSUSE Board elections. The concept I conveyed to the artist in the beginning remained intact, yet the final outcome of the artwork was different than what I was envisioning. And it was BETTER! while still adhering to the main concept request. In every case, the outcome of my requests have been successful when I actively engage in collaborating the artwork. When we don't collaborate, the work sucks. And by no means am I a graphic artist. The artwork team will welcome your collaboration even if you can't draw a straight line to save your life. :-) Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Hi Marcus, Yes, this is new. I just had this made so we can use it for the booth at SCaLE. I drew a crappy concept by hand and then sent it to a proper artist. He was able to turn my drawing into something that actually look good! I am very pleased with the way it turned out.
