[opensuse-artwork] Artwork for openSUSE 12.3

Hi all. As the 12.3 release date gets closer, we should focus on preparing the artwork, now. From what I can see, we got proposals from Victor: http://paste.opensuse.org/44822206 and the one Ivan, Richard and I was working on: http://marcusmoeller.ch/share/oS/12_3/grow_05.png The latter has been prepared to work well with the produkt-based Plasma theme that is in testing in K:D:F and Factory right now. There are already a lot of submissions on the flickr page, but from what I can see, at least the non-photographic designs, does not fullfil our logo guidelines. The photos could of course be bundled to a supplementary wallpaper package. (who will do the work?) I would like to suggest to push the above two proposals to factory and continue working on it. We would also gain more feedback this way. Is that okay for you? There are other wallpapers there that meet the criteria of our guidelines. There are submissions by it-s and tian2992 that seem to be potential candidates too. Can we consider those for a default as well and not just yours and Victor's? Since that makes the number of possible defaults higher, how should we choose the default one? Could you please point out those images? I cannot see anything besides photographical art from tian (which does now work well for default artwork) and no sumbissions from i-ts. As also discussed before. The 'guidelines' stated on the flickr page does only cover a small part. The logo guidelines have to be added and the need for svgs. As for the release artwork for 12.3, I like the Grow design. I would have preferred a shade of green or lime in the background rather than the grey but that's just mho. With regards to the manner in which all the artwork has been compiled and selected I think I will keep my personal opinion to myself but to say this: A plan was set in motion which received support and others followed yet in the end a decision was made by persons with "meritocratic" influences to override all other entries. In an earlier email the statement was made that open source is not a democracy where subjects are voted on but a meritocracy where those with the capability to do so can and will if they decide to do so. I believe it's a reality we all need to understand so we can maintain a comprehension and acceptability of the state of things as we continue to be productive throughout the development of each release. I myself looked back on the artwork that was submitted through the Flickr page and have to agree that while many of them are truly excellent submissions, the vast majority are not the type of design typically used for core design. This is not to say that we should maintain a "typical" design with each release either. There are a number of beautiful photographs that would make excellent core art for 8 months until the next release comes out. However, since there is not truly any one particular person or group with the responsibility to decide what makes it and what doesn't to be the core artwork for any given release it will always be the person with the highest level of merit in the meritocracy very similar to a hierarchy. Dear DuBois,

you should have learned from now, that you could just use the sources (which are available in git and from this list), modify them to your likes and send a proposal to this list. Paragraph like below will tell the same without questioning anyone's ability to learn, which is in all cultures one of top rated insults: "you can use the sources which are available in git and from this list, modify them to your liking and send a proposal to this list." -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, thanks for pointing that out and sorry for sounding somewhat harsh. If some of you are interested in good 'getting started guidelines' for Inkscape or even Packaging, I could post some links. Thank you for your response Marcus. I did not take it as harsh, but I understand how some may have. Attached is my "small" version with a subtlety of green to the background. On Tue, Jan 1, 2013 at 2:29 AM, Marcus Moeller <mail@marcusmoeller.ch> wrote:

Looks fine. Maybe we can create something like a mood-version depending on the time of the day for GNOME (not sure if KDE also supports it now). Then we could blend from black to green. Greets Marcus
