[opensuse-artwork] Suggestion for beautyful window decorations (Theme) for 10.3

hi all ! There are an excellent window decorations in existence - called "StyleXP CoughDrop" - which is a proprietary add-on for a proprietary operating system. Guess which one? :) :) I describe their work as BEAUTIFUL, STUNNING and FIRST-CLASS ! ! ! While we cannot copy their work directly, but we can make something similar, or at least enhance current SUSE 10.2 decorations where appropriate. I have uploaded 2 screen shots with "StyleXP CoughDrop" applied, with explanations on the screen shots themselves. It shows you different windows elements, such as: buttons, radio buttons, check boxes, progress bar, scroll bar, tool bar, etc... [opensuse-artwork] openSuSE distribution branding rules

Like mentioned earlier on this list, designing is not only done internaly anymore. Community members have in some part taken over tasks for designing and delivering the artwork for the opensuse distribution. Now I notice a problem for suse as one of the major respected Linux disrtibutions in the world. Designing for branding is (parly) done for the artistic looks making the branding a lesser concern. Regarding this, I like to point at the current branding for 10.3. For some unknown reason a designer liked to drop the offical chameleon branding in favor of his/her own design. But not only was a new chameleon introduced, it is also mixed with the official chameleon branding in the installation and booting processes and the new chameleon is used in different forms. (openSUSE bug 263881) We can discuss the artwork, but since this is about branding I feel strongly for discussing and setting rules about branding logos like the chameleon can be replaced. Not to mention how to save the current proposed branding for 10.3 to be more focused on the already solid and transparent branding for users / consumers. Imho branding is about how users / customers recognize, visually feel and value a distribution. Branding is not primary about producing beautifull artwork but placing a very solid brand experience. It is used to form the distribution experience for users / customers as a whole, lesser just subdistributions. I propose to set groundrules for openSUSE distribution branding, for now in respect to the already strongly founded branding logo's and styles used in 10.2, 10.1. With these groundrules set we then should have paved the path for artistic freedom and play without hurting the branding. Probably by use of also some rules how to propose and accept new branding logo's and styles. It would be nice to have this image (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/OpenSuSE+Splash?content=54311) as default for gnome splash screen. What do you think? Hi folks, I'd like to welcome everyone on the list and start an initial discussion to get the project move forward a bit. Historically the openSUSE look has been designed internally. I believe we aught to change that and make use of a broader community even in this area. I've been involved with GIMP and GNOME project initially. While being free software projects, we have developed the artwork in a fairly closed manner. We thought doing everything ourselves will give us better control of the consistency and avoid horrors of design by committee [1]. But the amount of work required to keep things consistent is way bigger than two blokes could handle. With the Tango project[2] we took a different approach, setting up some basic style guidelines and allow community members to focus on particular projects' needs. And I think this worked out much better. Yes, art direction is needed, but it would be nice to make use of the talent in the community. We make use of the hacking, translation or documentation skills of the community. Let's leverage the pixel pushin' power as well! Pixel Brainstorming ------------------- This is all food for discussion, but I'm proposing a three stage approach. We come up with some basic infrastructure to allow members of the openSUSE community submit ideas and mockups of how they would like the next release to look. I think a mediawiki is a good-enough solution for posting image mockups. We wouldn't necessarily limit the scope of this idea-brainstorm phase, just some core style guidelines I'm going to talk about later. People will go wild and post their ideas. The next stage would be to pick the best elements from these ideas and work out final designs. Most of this work would best be done with the resources available at Novell/SUSE. The last step would be implementation. Alternatively we narrow the scope of each new style change. Say the next version of openSUSE will include focus on machine virtualization, so we try to come up with adjectives that describe such functionality -- virtual, artificial, non-physical, emulated, maintainable... and then develop themes based around these adjectives. The next stage would remain the same as above, cherry-picking, polish and implement. Major vs Minor -------------- In the past, each version of openSUSE looked radically different from the previous one. While it does bring some excitement to the product, there really isn't any evolution and gradual polish involved. So my next proposal is to only do the radical changes for major version releases and do variations of the the theme for the minor version updates. I hope to illustrate that a little if time allows. Infrastructure ============== WIKI ---- The opensuse.org mediawiki is quite sufficient for managing artwork mockups, we just need to figure out some structure for this. SVN --- To better manage and share graphical assets we probably want to set up a public svn repository. While not a typical tool for an artist, SVN allows for relatively easy version control, deals with binary files well, and allows to check out the latest version through a web interface. The barrier for entry isn't impossible to overcome. In the past we've maintained branches for individual products/versions (SLED10, SUSE10.2, etc.) and put the common reusable assets in trunk (logos, palettes, templates, etc.). I belive that sort of structure would work for us as well, but on opensuse.org. Of course there are some challenges. We need to have some legal evaluation regarding the use of the logos. While I believe we should allow the use of the openSUSE and geeko logos, there are some strict guidelines regarding the use of Novell logos and trademarks[3]. This Mailing List ----------------- This ML is meant to be used for discussion around specific designs as well as general openSUSE artwork-related issues. It's not meant for upstream project artwork discussions even though openSUSE ships it. Action Items ============ * Write down basic style guidelines for openSUSE theming. (me) * Create a list of thing that need theming and some tips for each (based off the current styling status pages [4]. The list should be extended with widget and window manager themes) (me) * Set up svn repository at svn.opensuse.org/svn/opensuse-artwork/ (??) * Unify and structure the artwork related documents on the opensuse.org wiki. [opensuse-artwork] bootsplash for different vga-modes

Maybe this belongs in bugzilla. But since this list hasn't been announced yet I'm not completely sure what's on topic and what isn't ;-) I have a framebuffer problem when using the nvidia blob, which means I either have to change vga mode to lower colour depth+resolution which means I don't get a bootsplash or have the virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6) be useless. I have tried to change the colour depth for the provided bootsplash to 256 colours but I still can't get it to work. Probably something wrong with me since I'm a graphics no-good. I believe the problem is quite common, hence the existance of this wiki page: http://en.opensuse.org/NVidia_framebuffer_console_HOWTO So I wonder if we could provide official bootsplash themes that work with something like 800x600@256 colours (0x303). [opensuse-artwork] openSUSE wallpapers vote proposal

hi all ! It's too bad that openSUSE 10.2 shipped with poor wallpapers, and the default one was not beautyful. In the past, SUSE Linux 9.1 and 10.0 shipped with BEAUTYFUL wallpapers, installed by default ! This is important since this thing is the first one a user seems on his brand new desktop, and wallpaper is one of the criterions that make a man happy or unhappy about his new desktop, and I'm really unhappy due to the sorry state of SUSE wallpapers recently. So, to fix the sorry state of 10.2 wallpaper and make sure it doesn't happens again in 10.3, I propose: 1. automatically package and install, by default, top 10 highest-rated wallpapers from kde-look.org on each openSUSE release. 2. the default wallpaper, I think should be chosen democratically, by votes. 3. kde-look.org wallpapers can be SUSEfied, by adding a SUSE lizard at the top-right corner, like we did in 9.1 and 10.0 releases. 4. All previous successfull wallpapers should NOT get dropped, but be supplied with newer openSUSE releases, such as default 9.1 and 10.0 wallpapers. What do you think of it ? ..Of course we must filter some off-topic or offensive wallpapers, prior to voting. P.S.
