Hi folks, my wife helped me with the artistic part of my inkscape work for our entry in the openSUSE-12.1 Artwork competition: http://www.zq1.de/~bernhard/linux/opensuse/12.1/opensuse-12.1-draft9.svg.png (CC-SA licensed) The directory also contains earlier versions and svg source. I used the colors from http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Artwork_guidelines Butter and Lemon colors for the background gradient and Sky color for the Bezier curves with an added white band - all slightly transparent to better merge into the whole. Maybe the background could still be improved... [opensuse-artwork] how we do distro artwork

Hi, I am not an artist and do not contribute very much to artwork (except ideas with which I annoy Robert), but I like to propose something as I think we are in a difficult situation when it comes to artwork. What I see on the artwork ML shows me that we are not working after a plan or concept. Here and there people come up with backgrounds or splashs which is great and shows a direction, but honestly I think that is not enough. Obviously there is more to design on the distro than just the wallpapers, the login page or the splash screen. There is widget theming, fonts, application spash screens, the Yast installer and probably more. We need everything two times in a branded and debranded version to get our new trademark policy going. Thats a lot of work, but can of course be simplified, the least effort version is to have 'just' a wallpaper, which is going to be used as splash and login manager background. Given the timeframe we have for 12.1 thats probably the only solution. But after 12.1 we face the problem again. And to make it a success I'd like to propose to rather discuss about a concept of design than about examples of design. IMO an example of a concept could be like this (just as an example, not as concrete proposal for the distro): ==> Old Industrial Grounds ====================== The next openSUSE Distro will be in a design in the idea of old industrial grounds. On the ground you find big rusty iron parts, most of them are broken as nobody took care for years. You find big iron girders, some are bent, with wholes and damages. Big screws lie around, holding fragments together. Rarely there is a larger part giving an impression of power and work that was done with this engines back in its times. The main colors here are dark brown and dark gray tending to black. Some surfaces are glossy as they are wet. Some plants bring a glimpse of dark green. Details show a bit of brighter rusty brown to red. <== Something like that could be a starting point of discussion where all involved people could develop their imagination of the scene. After we agreed on this little "atmospheric story", the work starts to transfer it on actual design elements: Fonts, colors, images, icons, logos etc. Again, discussion, but along a commonly agreed idea. The question would not be "Is it a nice picture?" but "Is this picture representing the old industrial ground well?" - still enough room for personal like and dislike.... Again, I am not an artist, but I work in software for long and learned that a concrete common idea really helps if you develop something in a group. And often it can be developed in a different space than the end product will be, ie. a basic idea of a software is best sketched on a whiteboard... Maybe that can help us to get to a more conceptual working style in artwork? [opensuse-artwork] poster project again

Hi all!!! I've gotten the budget together to do the awesome poster/calendar project we did last year again. You know, the one with the calendar of FOSS events on one side and the Beer poster on the other side. For this year, we're gonna do it even bigger, in the international Linux Magazine and the USA Linux Pro Magazine! So we should of course have new artwork :D Final artwork is required on the first of Oct, just 4 weeks from now. All the rest would be pretty much the same as last year. we deliver the graphics for the front side, they design the calendar on the back. Specs for pir artwork are: Size: 400 mm * 574 mm, plus 3mm additional bleed on each side, Hi-res PDF, 4-colour, CMYK. Now we can get that two ways. First, I can get the SUSE marketing people to design something for us. Either Robert, if he has time, or someone in the corporate marketing. The other option is of course all of YOU. But we're all very busy with the openSUSE conference and the openSUSE 12.1 artwork. And if we make this, it has to be REALLY GOOD. Because there is the calendar on one side, we have to have a really cool poster to make people hang up the openSUSE side! The question thus is: can we come up with something good in 3-4 weeks, or should I start asking inside SUSE? Think about it carefully: of course you all CAN come up with something cool, BUT do we have time between working on the openSUSE conf and openSUSE 12.1 and all other things like the flyer etc? If we rush it, it might not be good - and then everyone will hang up the calendar side :( Let me know your thoughts. Jos

[opensuse-artwork] Marketing Hackfest Proposed Tasks

The time is growing near for our second-ever Marketing Hackfest on 15-16 September 2011 immediately following the openSUSE Conference. As a reminder to everyone, you do not have to be in Nuremberg in order to participate as we can do both in-person an and online. I have added two new sections to our hackfest page at http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:12.1_Marketing_Hackfest 1. Suggested Topics There is a list of suggested topics and tasks to focus on during the hackfest. This is not a complete absolute list but merely suggestions and we will all agree on the day of Hackfest which items to focus on. Please feel free to add more topics or adjust existing topics. I will be adding links to some resources over the next couple of days. 2.. Results In order to keep track of what we have accomplished, we have a results section now. If you have completed a task or needs continued work after the hackfest please make note in the Results section. Also, I want to mention that if any of you feel ambitious and want to get started (or even complete a task) now, feel free to do so! Hi folks, With the 12.1 hackfest coming up in just a few weeks, I think it would be nice if we could have some presentation slide templates created that everyone in the hackfest can use for developing their presentation tasks. I realize there isn't a final consensus for 12.1 artwork, but I do see reasonable similiarities that we could use them for 12.1 presentation artwork. Can someone create this and post it in our GIT so others can begin thieer own works? Thanks! [opensuse-artwork] openSUSE marketing hackfest

Hi all, Sorry about the complete lack of clarity and explanation on the marketing hackfest idea. Most of you knew we would do it - but what/how/when/where was unclear. Let me attempt to clarify: As you'll be at oSC anyway, adding a few hotel nights for a meeting is easy! We can get some work done, in preparation for the next openSUSE release for example; or on folders, flyers and other artwork; or on the ambassador program; and of course have some MORE fun... It will happen the two days after the conf, 15 and 16 of September. The meeting needs: hotel nights for all of the participants; a meeting room; and FUN! The fun comes by itself and the meeting room will be at the openSUSE office. The hotel nights work like this: I pay. As in, EVERY participant, if you had sponsorship for the conference or not, can send me the bill and I will reimburse 2 nights like we did for the conf sponsorship: up to the cheapest reasonable option which is about 45 euro a night, I believe. So you have to fill in a form, attach the receipts, SUSE will then pay the receipt value up to 90 euro. Let me know if you have any questions (or corrections)... Jos
