[opensuse-artwork] bootsplash for different vga-modes

Maybe this belongs in bugzilla. But since this list hasn't been announced yet I'm not completely sure what's on topic and what isn't ;-) I have a framebuffer problem when using the nvidia blob, which means I either have to change vga mode to lower colour depth+resolution which means I don't get a bootsplash or have the virtual consoles (Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6) be useless. I have tried to change the colour depth for the provided bootsplash to 256 colours but I still can't get it to work. Probably something wrong with me since I'm a graphics no-good. I believe the problem is quite common, hence the existance of this wiki page: http://en.opensuse.org/NVidia_framebuffer_console_HOWTO So I wonder if we could provide official bootsplash themes that work with something like 800x600@256 colours (0x303). Alongside the higher quality ones of course. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

Hi Martin, Just making sure I'm understanding your question - are you requesting another set of bootsplash themes that would work well on 8 bit displays to avoid color banding of our usually textured theme? To be honest I'd rather drop all the required resolutions than add yet another set of themes. Personally I'd like to avoid it. I'm fine in creating a more simplistic boot sequence instead, but a large community usually doesn't appreciate good clean design and prefers bling :/ And for opensuse we're largely dealing with home user enthusiasts, the exact kind of people who appreciate glossy finish, wild saturated colors etc... Does the current theme look really bad on 8bit? I need to try. cheers -- -[http://jimmac.musichall.cz]- -[even a stopped clock gives a right time twice a day]- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

The thing is that when I change vga-mode to 0x303 (800x600+256 colours) in menu.lst I don't get a boot splash at all. I assumed this was because our bootsplash requires a higher colour depth. But trying to make them 256 colours with convert didn't help. So maybe something else causes there to be no boot splash with poorer vga-modes.
