Hi, Is is multilanguage or just german or french ? I asked a clerk in a mall here and he said that the doc was in english and the OS french only :( So if I buy it here (switzerland), will it be only french or can I have a choice: french, german or english? Thanks!

Mysql 4.0.20 RPM (from mysql.com)

I am having problems installing the rpm for mysql 4.0.20 on my system (Suse 9.1 pro, AMD 64). 4.0.18, which is included in this distro, works, but has a bug with a particular command ("load data from master") which is apparently fixed in 4.0.20. I am able to recompile it from source, but if I install the RPM, the mysql daemon and client crash immediately after start (segfault). has anybody else run into this? This happens to me on two different systems. But Suse 9.1 64 bit, one is an AMD64 desktop and the other one is a dual opteron server. I sent this information to MSI and haven't heard anything back from them. I will wait and see if their next bios upgrade fixes the problem for me. But i did find a message on the mandrake boards that had the source code for a kernel module that fixed the problem as well. I compiled that and things have been steady for the past day. I have been able to use OpenOffice without the machine locking up, and everything else appears to be stable as well. I don't know why the new bios worked for some people and not me, but the kernel module is fine for now. Maybe in the future i'll upgrade my or cpus and that will alleviate my problems. SLES8/AMD64/Raid problems?

good day all ... has anyone had any problems updating SLES8 on amd64 to the current 2.4.x kernel? after clean install of SLES8 then a YOU update the system fails to boot with no root filesytem errors and then reiserfs errors. this is a megaraid raid0 system and reiserfs. i think perhaps a kernel module is not getting loaded correctly at boot time but i cannot get it worked out. any help appreciated. -- michael

Has there been a recent change in the accounts used to access updates at the Suse update site? I just tried to update my SLES 8 AMD64 system, and it is not accepting the user name and password that I have been using before. (Login failure from YOU.) Should I send email to support(a)suse.com about this? Also, someone mentioned that I can get updates without registering my software. Well, I've registered two packages already, but neither of them are working right now (same user name and password as above), so I'd like to find the fastest way to get my systems updated. thanks, eyc

I did not get a chance to try out the recomended solutions until this weekened, and none of them seem to work. I know that the lines added are loading, because the scroll wheel disapears from the mouse under proto=bare, but the mouse still does not function properly under the KVM. I also tried switching back and forth witht the ctrl+alt+(function key), as suggested and none seemed to work. Would this have anything to do with the fact that it is an optical mouse and not a trackball? I can provide my menu.lst, and name and models of the mouse and KVM if needed. Hoping someone may have a few more suggestions. Similalry to original questioner I depend on openafs and it's currently the only problem which prevents me from moving to Suse 9.1 on Opteron. Hello! I just downloaded and compiled this kernel. Unfortunately, I still run Mandrake 9.2, but problems are not Mandrake specific. 1. I can't run Oracle 9.2.0.4 for AMD64 with SGA larger that 1.7Gb with 2.6 kernel: [oracle@dm oracle]$ sqlplus SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production on Mon Jun 7 15:26:40 2004 Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation. via_sata & 9.1?

Howdy, I'm trying to convert a Windows user to Linux. He has the same exact system I do (essentially) and he likes the newfound speed, but I can't get 2.6.6 w/SATA working right. I have 9.0 AMD64 running 2.6.6 (hand made kernel w/via_sata working wel!), and he has 9.1 running 2.6.5-52-smp, with via_sata & other modules broken. So, what's the current status with SuSe 9.1 AMD64 for Dual Opterons on the MSI K8T800 Master2 FAR motherboard (via8237, I think). Dvdauthor problems...

Has anyone else had success using the dvdauthor program (http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net) to create dvd menus? My efforts keep failing with the spumux program (part of dvdauthor) failing with: INFO: Locale=en_US.UTF-8 INFO: Converting filenames to UTF-8 ERR: Cannot convert UTF8 string 'buttonsone.png': Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character I've tried every variation of setting the Locale to UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1, etc but no luck... Using all the same software on a older AMD computer running a 32-bit version of linux, I have no problems... I don't know a lot about character encodings, so I'm a bit lost here and am hoping someone else with an AMD64 has gotten these programs working with SuSE linux. For what it's worth, I've tracked down the portion of the code that fails (and produces the above error) to be related to a call to the 'iconv' program. Any clues, hints, virtual kicks-to-the-head, etc would be appreciated.... Larry Prikockis

FTP Clients

Ok, This is the year 2004, and I'd have expected FTP to get a bit better ... I'm sitting here, trying to upload with KBear (The supposedly feature rich graphical ftp client) and unfortunately the line broke, and that caused the great bear to hang. It's about a ton of files, that I need to upload and I can't restart the upload because KBear will break on the first folder/file that's already copied. Looks nice, but worthless as an ftp client. Let's try gftp, I have to change to a different local folder ... oobs! gftp crashed. Now, where's the good old lxftp client that *does* work? SuSE people, please test these tools before you limit us to few options. please.

NVIDIA Drivers with Custom SuSE kernels

Hello, I've been trying to build the NVIDIA driver for customized SuSE kernels for some time now with no luck. First off, this problem is replicatable on both x86_64 and i686 architectures, but I'm primarily concerned with the x86_64 machine as it is far superior ;). Using the default 54.5 SuSE kernel, I can use the nvidia installer available from: http://www.sh.nu/download/nvidia/linux-2.6/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-5332-pkg… via http://www.minion.de. And the driver will build without issue, allowing me to modprobe it, remove it, use it, poke it, whatever. I've tried playing with the installer a bit but still cannot get past the errors above. I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a solution or maybe I can even modify the nvidia.sh SuSE provides in /lib/modules/scripts to allow me to use a custom kernel. Any suggestions, much appreciated. How does LD_ASSUME_KERNEL work on SuSE Linux?

Hi all, Do Ulrich Drepper's notes on LD_ASSUME_KERNEL http://people.redhat.com/~drepper/assumekernel.html apply to SuSE Linux? If not, how does LD_ASSUME_KERNEL work? I've tried using readelf -n on various libraries and it always comes up empty. The command eu-readelf apparently does not exist. Also, is this thread still relevant: http://sources.redhat.com/ml/libc-hacker/2003-06/msg00032.html Does LD_ASSUME_KERNEL with 32-bit libraries work differently from LD_ASSUME_KERNEL with 64-bit libraries? Apache and PHP

Hi, Getting Apache to work with PHP seems almost impossible on a 64bit system if you are trying to do it by source. So I'm using the RPMs :) However I am getting this problem: PHP will not use its extensions anymore! After the initial install of SuSE 9.1 PHP was working well with its extensions, now I can't ever get sessions_start() to work without an error. The php.ini file has the extensions, the extensions are there. The only thing I did - I haven't touched php - was trying to get SSL to work with Apache 2 (I failed at this task, anyone have luck or clue how to do this?). How can I get PHP back to recongize its extensions? Thanks for your support, Yoed

Hi to al & esp to Andreas Jaeger I'm seeking for advise to upgrade my workstation to amd64 platform. OS: suse 9.1 main usage: (ejb/servlet swt gui java development ) typical session load: Eclipse-gtk, or Websphere Dev Studio + Jboss or WebSphere App Server or Tomcat + oracle & mysql dbs + vmware sometimes (with XP loaded ) Question: 1. what proc to choose ? 1 desktop Amd Athlon 64 3400 (2.2 GHz) or 2 x amd opteron 242 ( 1.6 Ghz) Are there java performance gains when using opterons which will justify +300$ price difference apart from a reason from sun that it will ship a jvm tuned specifically for amd64 opteron? 2. 1 or 2 Gig RAM Memory ? on my current ahtlon 1400 , 768 Meg Ram the WebSphere App Server takes almost 1.5 min to boot. Clicking on the top left corner of a window, selecting "To Desktop" and selecting a different desktop from the next menu has no effect. This worked on SuSE8.2/IA32.

SUSE freezes during large file transfer

Hello, I'm running Suse Linux 9.1 Professional. Everything runs fine without any problems until I try to copy a large amount of data (about 1 gig) either to or from the machine. It consistently freezes during this large data transfer, and I can no longer ping or get any response from the machine. Once I noticed a message on the console, at the time of the freeze: -- Message from syslogd@hostname at 2004-05-29........ Hostname kernel: invalid operand: 0000 [1] SMP -- Here are some stats on the machine: -Tyan motherboard -Dual Opteron -SCSI raid using megaraid driver -Broadcom nics using tg3 driver Can anyone help? thanks, Kevin

I've uploaded 2.6.5 AMD64 Linux kernel to ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/Kernel-AMD64/ The kernels contain a lot of fixes since 2.6.4, including even some backports from 2.6.6 and 2.6.6. Btw. the kernels should also work with the Nvidia driver. If you encounter problems with the kernel, please tell me directly. Application issues

I have been using SuSE 9.1 on a Dual Opteron system, and I have run into a few problems with some applications. I just want to see if these are issues experienced by others or if its something in my setup. GAIM : * cannot connect to yahoo OpenOffice : * Locks the system hard. Requires a reboot * This is not the version that SuSE ships, but one that i had downloaded and installed on an nfs share. I can try to install the SuSE supplied version on a local drive if that helps. Java Applications : * Lock the system hard, Requires a reboot * Using the latest sun JDK (1.4.2_04) and also the Blackdown 32 bit versions cause the same thing. It works fin for a while and then the system locks up and i have to press reset. * Applications tried : - eclipse M9 - oXygen XML Editor 4.0 * small java programs that i have written work fine, but then they are not long running. FVWM : * I was not able to move the windows of some java applications ( again eclipse) nor of OpenOffice. I tried the SuSE supplied version, the latest 2.5.10 version and finally got things back to normal with the 2.4.18 version. I have also installed the 32bit verson on my laptop and i haven't seen any of these problems. I know probably none of these are SuSE specific, but just want to see if other have encountered this and if they have solved the problem. My system specs : MSI K8T Master FAR mb 2 Opteron 240s 2G memory 1 SATA drive (system installed here) 1 IDE DVD-RW 2 IDE HD (work area) nVidia graphics card The system is not a dual boot. Also, the SATA drive shows up as /dev/hda. Should it be /dev/hda or /dev/sda? I haven't had any problems with the drive aside froma lot of annoying messages in the log file : hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } But i see these for all drive but the DVD-RW and from what i have read it appears i can ignore these.
