Hi, after finally getting my MSI K8T Neo VIA SATA controller to work somewhat by turning on udma2 support, I ran into some new problems e.g. when trying to install the w32codecs for xine and also get them to work with xine (either the suse x86_64 rpms or my custom built packages from cvs). But let me not bore you with these detail but ask some general questions for my understanding: 1.) As I understand 32bit programs can not dynamically link to 64bit .so libs. In no case. Can you confirm that? [I.e. my xine must be 32bit if I want to use the 32bit w32codecs] How can 64bit and 32bit program then interact at all? Only via sockets or rpc? 2.) Could my remaining problems with my Athlon64 K8T board be related to the bios not being well tested when running in 64bit mode (due to the lack of a 64bit windows)? In some cases Suse 9.1 AMD64 contains also 32bit versions of frequently used libraries. 3) How can I compile/rebuild these libs preferably from the suse sources to a 32bit package and get the installation location right (relocation). Using linux32 and rpmbuild or simply from 32bit suse 9.1 DVDs as binary rpms? 4) How do I relocate non-suse source rpms correctly so that when I compile to 64bit, they end up in the correct /usr/lib64 directories? And then when I start the app how does it know where to find the 64bit .so libs? 5) *-devel packages are noarch (i.e. they work for both 32 and 64 bit), correct? 6) Is there is method to change compiler flags (e.g. add -fPIC) when building a package without actually unpacking, changing the spec file, repacking and trying it again? Then finally just out of general interest, has anybody ever benchmarked the 32bit Suse Linux against its 64bit sister on the same Athlon64 machine? I searched on the web quite a bit but couldn't find any good explanations. Therefore Any hints or links would be greatly appreciated. best regards, Jan

PXE/TFTP'ing 9.1 on AMD64

Hello, I currently have SuSE 9.1 Pro PXE/TFTP booting/autoinstalling working great with our 32-bit machines. My problem is that I can't seem to get this to also work with our x86_64 machines. I don't know if there is a graceful way to separate 32 and 64-bit stuff in the /tftpboot directory, so what I initially tried to do was make an isolinux.cfg menu option which specified an alternate (64-bit) linux and initrd, but when it loads the 64-bit kernel and initrd, the machine immediately reboots. I tried to boot it off the 32-bit kernel/initrd just to do the install, but as soon as it loads the data into ramdisk, it goes to a blue yast screen with the message "An error occurred during installation!" (very helpful) Lastly, I backed up the /tftpboot directory and blew it away, making a brand new one from scratch with the 64-bit distribution, and it behaved exactly like it did when I specified the alternate linux and initrd (rebooted). Now this situation suggests that setting up 64bit network booting the same way as with the 32-bit stuff doesn't work with my 64-bit systems, and that there is something special I need to be doing for them. Is there some documentation specific to 64-bit network booting / autoinstalling? Does it in fact differ from the 32-bit procedure (aside from having an x86_64 kernel/initrd/distro/control-files)? Has anyone successfully PXE/DHCP/TFTP/autoinstalled an AMD64 machine? Perhaps it is just a compatibility problem with my hardware? The 64bit systems I'm installing are Opteron 146's on Asus SK8N motherboards (nForce chipset). Thanks in advance, -Charles Smith

susewatcher Show Messages Locks

SuseWatcher is showing a little piece of paper in the green circle, meqaning there are messages from program installs. When I click on "Show Messages" SuseWatcher locks up and I have to kill it. Everything else on it seems to work OK. I've tried removing and reinstalling it. Any ideas? Steve

Tips: Loki Game Installs

OK, I just finished installing Civilization:CTP, Railroad Tycoon II, and Sim City 3000 full versions. They all seem to at least run up OK. (Haven't had a chance to play with them, yet.) Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know a couple of tips that I used for installing these that may help others. 1. "linux32" is your friend. Each of the installs were done with the linux32 command. ie. "linux32 sh /media/cdrecorder/install.sh" 2. Sim City 3000 required the latest patch and a startup file with the following command in it: "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 /usr/local/games/SC3U/sc3u" That's it. Short and sweet. Now, off to play.... sched_setaffinity (always EFAULTs) on Suse 2.6.4/5

Hi folks, I'm working with some guys at PGI/AMD to get some sched_setaffinity support in some runtime systems. We're having great difficulty getting sched_setaffinity working. The code below was constructed via the code in linux/kernel/sched.c, contrary to the prototypes and the like. Surely we must be doing something rather stupid, because we keep getting -EFAULT. The only thing I can guess is that the sizeof(cpumask) is different in kernel than it is in user land. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Hi, I'm looking for a fully supported by SuSE 9.1 Athlon 64 (socket 754) motherboard, my latest http://hardwaredb.suse.de/ search provided only three "unknown status" results, the database is likely out of date. Thanks for any suggestion and/or experience report. I'd like to avoid binary only drivers (no tainted kernel thanks :) and if possible gigabit internet. Laurent

Hi Holger, We are not using the same processors, but have been seeing intermittent system hangs on our dual Opterons 244, and up to now, still being baffled by these problems. But in your case, it appears to be memory trouble, and you may like to strip down the memory to a single unit and try the memtest again. I sent a similar email on system hang problems sometime ago, and got quite a few responses. Apparently I am not alone with AMD Opteron processors. Someone (sorry I missed his name) pointed out the AMD Revision Guide http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/2575 9.pdf This mentions quite a few problems on the CPU that can result in system hangs. I don't know if these problems have been rectified and most of them are described to be "fix planned" in this June dated document. My supplier provided me a beta release of Tyan BIOS which I have started to roll out. But I take it that these only get round the problems on the Opteron processors by turning certain BIOS function flags off. I suppose proper fixes are needed on the CPUs themselves. Soundcards. Any Recomendations?

Hi There, I am in NZ and I can only really get 2 brands that are any good. Terratec and Creative. I would like a nice mid-high end sound card. And would like to know which of the terratec ranges and creative ranges work well with alsa and in particular suse 9.1. I.e I don't want to pay for a Terratec with a breakout box and the breakout box not be support, the same goes for creative. So can someone recomend particular products which are good. I know that Envy 24 chipset is well supported and i've looked through alsa soundcard matrix, but I would like some personal recomendations feedback.
