Charles Smith had a problem with PXE/TFTP booting/autoinstalling.
For Red Hat 32-bit and 64-bit both work, and aside from the last
step of "autoinstalling", the procedure for SUSE should be the same.
For Intel x86 and AMD x86_64, /tftpboot/pxelinux.0 works fine.
In pxelinux.cfg the files for 32-bit machines has the lines
default local
#default linux_install
prompt 1
timeout 100
display msgs/boot.msg
F1 msgs/boot.msg
F7 msgs/snake.msg
label linux_install
kernel vmlinuz
append ksdevice=eth0 initrd=initrd.img network ks=http://156.148.64.101/kickst
art/scivu6/ks.cfg lang= devfs=nomount ramdisk_size=8192
label local
localboot 0
where vmlinuz and initrd.img have been taken from the appropriate 32-bit
distribution whereas for 64-bit the names vmlinuz and initrd.img
are slightly different to refer to different files, the ones taken
from the 64-bit distribution. It works fine for both architectures.
As Charles Smith wrote, perhaps the installation procedure for 64-bit
is different from 32-bit for SUSE. From the description of the problem
it would seem that the last step starting YAST is the problem, that
the machine reboots rather than install.

I am looking desperatly for a driver for the AN983B
network adapter. Does anyone got it working? How?
I am using 9.0 pro version.
Thanks a lot

I'm thinking of replacing my PocketPC and have been looking at Palm OS units, as well as the Zaurus.
With my new found love of Linux, the embedded Linux/Java system in the Zaurus sounds interesting. Any
experiences with the Zaurus anyone can share? (especially in terms of compatibility with the SuSE
Linux desktop, but any other thoughts are appreciated as well)

Hello Angelo,
Download the latest BIOS from Tyan site (2885_202) and install it first,
before you do anything else. Otherwise there will be problems with SATA.
Install 9.1 and do an online upgrade and say 'yes' to nvidia driver, it
works fine.
By using only one memory dimm per cpu you will not get the benefit of 128
bit wide memory access. Maybe put the two 1 Gb dimms in slots 1 & 2 for
cpu #1 and get a couple more for cpu #2

Hi,
I use Suse 9.1 Pro for x86_64 with kernel-smp-2.6.5-7.75.x86_64 on a
dual AMD Opteron 248. The board is a Tyan K8S Pro (2882).
My problem is that I can't get my Intel Pro/1000 MT server PCI-X cards
to work. Whenever I do a "modprobe e1000" the systems freezes
completely with no error messages. I didn't succeed in compiling the
driver I downloaded directly from Intel.
Does someone know a workaround for this or has information that the
intel driver doesn't work on this architecture?
best regards, Stefan

I'll help fill in a little...
On board RAID is never hardware RAID IME, it's always pseudo-hardware.
The controller runs the individual SATA ports and deals with a little bit
of interconnecting logiccy stuff, but the CPU does all the grunt work of
writing to the drives, working out striping, working out parity (in the case
of RAID 5), etc, via the driver and controller.
The linux kernel supports the SATA ports, but not the SATA RAID itself, at
the moment... BUT...
If the manufacturers of that specific chipsset have a driver, it MAY be
possible to get it to work. But you'll probably need another machine with
SuSE 9.1 on it in order to compile the driver against the kernel in order to
load it at install time.
One on-board SATA that does work with linux is promise, but their drivers
may not compile against a 2.6 kernel... (I've never tried, but they're
written for 2.4, so it seems unlikely without modification)
If you DO have a promise, and the driver DID manage to compile, report back
and I'll talk you through an install...
:)
hello,
i tried to install suse 9.1 pro (official CDs/DVDs)
on a SunFire v20z (bi opteron), but there is no DVD drive,
not even an IDE connector, ...
and it seems that 64bit installation can only be done
with the DVD included.
i try to boot from 32bit CD and start a network install
from a FTP server with 64bit DVD contents : it returns
an error message after loading ramdisk. i don't have
this problem when i try to install the 32bit DVD contents
with the same procedure.
i can't find a 64 bit-specific boot disk except
the DVD itself.
any ideas ?
thanks, paul.
Hi there,
Just upgraded to the newly released kernel from suse:
vmlinuz-2.6.5-7.75-default
Seems that the Broadcom onboard gigabit lan. Does not work with the new
kernel (Works fine with either bcm5700 or tg3 kernel modules). I get:
Whenever trying to bring it up. I have also tried assigning static ip.
Does not work.
Jun 18 17:00:04 rincewind dhcpcd[3500]: dhcpStart: ioctl SIOCSIFFLAGS:

Any Suggestions?
Kind regards
Joel
I just built a new rig with 2 10,000rpm SATA hard
drives. I have them setup in RAID 0 in WinXP Pro. I am
totally new to any linux, but I thought I would give
SuSE a try since I like playing with new things and
its 64bit compatible. Anyways, I have yet to install
SuSE 9.1 cause when I start the installation one of
the first messages goes something like this:
This system has at least one hard disk w/ a RAID
configuration sold by the BIOS as RAID that is in fact
a software RAID.
(then the last part of the message states)
If you do an installation on these Disks your RAID
configuration and any Data on the RAID will be lost!
Now I was just wondering if this means it will erase
WinXP and my other files off my drives? Should I just
continue through the normal installation? I am
completely new but would like to experience the whole
linux world. I have AMD64 3200++ and SuSE Linux Pro
9.1. Please help me out. Thanks, tony.
