I deeply depend on afs/openafs. As there seem to be no way to use afs with a 2.6 kernel I would like to run a 2.4 kernel. Is there any way I can run a 2.4 Kernel with SuSE 9.1, be it rpm or selfmade, on my k8 cpu?
9.1 will not really work with a 2.4 kernel
Hi, could you please be more specific why 2.4 kernel cannot be used with Suse 9.1? Similalry to original questioner I depend on openafs and it's currently the only problem which prevents me from moving to Suse 9.1 on Opteron. I'm ready to get over the loss of hotplug, wireless, firewire etc. -- Mirek Ruda

Hi,

Kernel 2.6 has a number of enhancements, especially in the networking and hotplugging area that are incompatible with the way it was done in 2.4. Most of our scripts only handle the enhanced 2.6 mode - and where they handle 2.4, they have not been tested. Support for both kernels is rather difficult to achieve and test if you want to really use 2.6.
and it's currently the only problem which prevents me from moving to Suse 9.1 on Opteron. I'm ready to get over the loss of hotplug, wireless, firewire etc. --
9.1 works fine on Opteron. What exactly is your problem that you need a 2.4 kernel? Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SUSE Linux AG, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Stable openafs doesn't support 2.6 kernels :-( I'm going to test cvs head of openafs, but it may be easier for me to change several startup scripts to support 2.4 kernels (as I wrote, target machine has one network card, no hotplug, no wireless, ...). -- Mirek Ruda
