Update 8 to 9.1 via HTTP

Hi folks, He have a 2 way here without a DVD that we need to update to 9.1 as part of an eval for procurement. As a hack, I set up an webserver on the 4 way (9.1) to host the DVD as it's root. So, I told Yast that this was the installation source and disabled the other 2 CD's as installation sources (SUSE/UnitedLinux). So, then I did a system update. It was able to do a few packages and then failed on about 700 packages. Yast provided no clue why, but I'm sure it's a dependency issue. So my question is, how can I update this 8.0 box to 9.1 using a DVD in another systems drive? Thanks for any help. Phil

SuSE 9.1 and sil 3512 Raid (SATA-Newbie question) ...

Hello List, Has anybody got the sil 3512 SATA Raid Controller working under SuSE 9.1? I have to set up two identical machines, both athlon 64 Systems and I'm not quite sure if I understand the principle of Hardware SATA-Raid under SuSE. I configured the RAID (two Samsung SATA disks) with the RAID setup tool after Boot for either mirrored or striped mode, but when installing suse, it keeps telling me that these are two separate disks, which can be used freely no matter what is configured in the RAID Controller Setup. I guess I am lacking the right driver...? I found out that either "medley" and/or "ataraid" should be the modules needed for proper use. Is that right or which one is necessary for kernel 2.6.x? Are they provided with SuSe 9.1? Should i load them through a manual installation? Are there other HW RAID management tools with SuSE 9.1? Trying to get scsi working

My BusLogic card is detected, but I don't seem to be able to load the module. modprobe gives:- FATAL: Error inserting BusLogic (/lib/modules/2.6.4-54.5-smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/BusLogic.ko): No such device The file mentioned does exist at the given location, so why can't I load it? Thanks, -Richard

Packman DVD files

I hope this isn't to much of a repeat question. I couldn't find any previous posts.... I have SuSE 9.1 for amd-64. I have all the updates installed. I downloaded libxine1-1_rc4a-0.pm.0.i686.rpm from packman site. I had to do a rpm -Uvh --force install Now I get error while loading shared libraries: libxine.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory If I try to uninstall (rpm -e libxine1-1_rc4a-0.pm.0.i686.rpm) it tells me it is not installed. I see the libs in /usr/lib/ and it is looking in /usr/lib64. Is there an rpm for lib64? Is there a "howto" or good "howto" I am more than willing to RTFM if someone could throw it at me. How to change default number of open files on Suse Linux ?

I know I can use the ulimit command to change the number of files that I can have open, but is there a system configuration that I can set somewhere so that all users have a higher number of open files by default without having to do a ulimit command, or modifying everyones login files ? Sorry to double-dip here, but I figure either the amd64 or the oracle bunch would be likely to deal with this. We have two systems using QLogic QLA2200/66 Fiber Channel RAID controllers talking to same on a Dell Powervault RAID array. I'm hoping there's a better way than sticking the controllers into a PC running winblows so we can use the software that came with the controllers... We'd sure appreciate any pointers -- and thanks in advance for reading this... --bill

SuSE9.1 and dnetc

Dear list, I am running SuSE9.1/64bit for AMD64 on EPoX8KDA3+ with 3200+ cg-core. I have got several more AMD64 systems in my lab, but they are different in cpu core, chipset and SuSE version (9.0). The problem I see with the above isolated new system is that dnetc, beta for linux/amd64, cannot communicate with dnetc servers in the Internet; 32bit dnetc seems to run properly. Since all other amd64 based systems with SuSE9.0 run 64bit dnetc properly, I guess SuSE9.1 may cause some problems with respect to dnetc. I wonder if someone of you are running 64bit dnetc on SuSE9.1/amd64. I am happy, if I can collect information before getting in touch with distributed.net. Thanks for your attention. yoriaki fujimori

How about editing /etc/profile? wifi pcmcia card fails to be initialized

I have been attempting for the last week to get my wireless card working on my new 64bit laptop. I downloaded the 9.1 release when it was made available on June 4, 2004. The card is recognized correctly by "cardctl ident" but it fails to be initialized. I have attempted both the prism2_cs driver and the orinoco_cs driver. Reliability of SuSE AMD64?

Hello, I'm in the market for a new Java workstation, so I'm looking at bi-Xeons and bi-Opterons. Now here is the catch: I do not have lots of time to spend on coding, and even less time on tinkering my setup, so my workstation must _just_ work. That's why I'm running SuSE: it just work almost without any maintenane. Now, I've been reading this mailing-list for a while, and it seems that AMD64 users are having a rough ride. Kernel lockups, JVM segfaults... Are those common ? Or is it just the usual 'background noise' ? I'm pretty sure that Opterons are, long-term, a better platform than Xeons. But my question is: does it _just_ work _right_ now? If Suse 9.1 for AMD64 is still a tad bumpy, can I just install SuSE 9.1 for x32 and expect flawless operation (I don't know if that question really make sense, so please be kind) ? Then I could get an bi-Opteron, wait 6 month for SuSE 9.2 and then finally enjoy the expected 20 or 30% boost (yeah right) brought by the x86-64 architecture. Secondary question: I would love some benchmarks that focus on Java (compilation and execution), between Opterons and Xeons. It seems that most benchmarks out there focus on rendering 3D scenes and encoding MP3s. Thanks in advance for your answers. Best Regards, --

Here's an update of my update problem. I contacted support(a)suse.com, and was informed that some problems have been occurring with YOU. I was advised to try the updates again after they contacted me, and I did, and this time, it seemed to have worked. I did not have to change anything, so it looks like the fixes were done entirely on the portal server end. However, the tech support did have some procedures that I shoudl try in case it still did not work. I am glad I did not have to implement those. eyc

Yes, being a software developer, you either get a thick skin or die trying to fix up everything. Rare is a compliment. So, I've been running my dual Opteron for 6 months now, and the only hassle was SATA (or my nickname SATAN). Maybe I was lucky only being able to afford 4GB or memory at the time. I cannot thank the SUSE support folks enough (Andreas Jaeger was (un)lucky enough to get me). They know 100x more then any equivalent Windows support person. I dumped SATA in favor of my tried/tested/trusted SCSI (adaptec 29160) in the end, and have never looked back. Linux is a very different concept from Windows. I grew up with Unix in the late 1980's early 1990's and was forced to the dark side ;-) for commerical reasons. If you have only ever been a Windows only person, and are looking to Linux, be patient. You probably took 10+ years to know all the things you know now. A similar learning curve for anything new is the norm. As Andi said, you don't see too many folks reporting to the list when the system runs smoothly. So far we've had very good experience with dual Opterons that we bought from Penguin Computing. The first (dual 244) is maxed out at 16GB (8x2GB PC2100). Had SLES8 (pre-installed) on it for six months now. The only time we reboot was for kernel upgrade. The box gets heavily used as computational server for several people in the group. Having the 16GB on the 64-bit OS is like a dream... We were so happy with it that we got another two dual 248s a couple of months ago. Has anyone managed to get apt working on SUSE 9.1 x86_64? I see that they have repositories, but they don't have any 64 bit RPMs. (The 32 bit RPMs won't install because they are looking for files in the 32 lib directories)

SuSE 8.2 installed via NFS can't seem to access DVDROM

I've just got done with installing SuSE 8.2 from an NFS server. It's functioning perfectly except that I can't seem to use the DVDROM* (which has worked with Win2K & Redhat 9; SuSE 8.2 too was able to start installing from it but I aborted that install and switched to an NFS install). What can I do to make the DVDROM work and what can I do to make a CD/DVD icon to appear on the root window of my KDE desktop? * 1) # mount /media/cdrom /dev/cdrom: Input/output error mount: you must specify the filesystem type # fgrep cdrom /etc/fstab /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0 # 2) In YaST, when I go to "Change Source of Installation" and try to add DVD, it says: Unable to create installation source from URL 'dvd:///'.

I am not able to debug threaded programs as I expect. Couldn't get registers: No such process. If I run gdb with LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.21 things seem to work properly. Is this a known issue? -K
