Re: [suse-amd64] CPU runs only with 800 MHz
Hello, is the cpufreqd / powernow-k8 now ready to support the Newcastle (AX, CG-Stepping) CPU? Moritz -- "Sie haben neue Mails!" - Die GMX Toolbar informiert Sie beim Surfen! Jetzt aktivieren unter http://www.gmx.net/info
For completion: I have running a Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro Board with Athlon 64 3000+ Newcastle (AX, CG-Stepping) and the CPU runs always on full speed. I read this thread and found the info, that powernow-k8 does not yet support this CPU. Is this right? Moritz

I have an Asus with the same chipset and the same CPU and it runs at 800/2000 as expected. I had to enable "AMD Cool'N'Quiet" in the BIOS though. Michael

Then it isn't the same CPU. The CG-Stepping CPUs are running at 1GHz in low power state, not at 800MHz. Your CPU is a Clawhammer (AP) C0-Stepping, mine is a Newcastle (AX) with CG-Stepping
I had to enable "AMD Cool'N'Quiet" in the BIOS though.
This is not necessary for Gigabyte Boards, where C'n'Q is always enabled in the Bios. Moritz -- +++ Jetzt WLAN-Router fr alle DSL-Einsteiger und Wechsler +++ GMX DSL-Powertarife zudem 3 Monate gratis* http://www.gmx.net/dsl

Newcastle powernow should work with the latest 2.6.5 kernel from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/kernel-of-the-day/ Note however this is not a fully tested and supported kernel, use at your own risk. -Andi
Hello Andi,
Newcastle powernow should work with the latest 2.6.5 kernel from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/kernel-of-the-day/
Am I right, that I only need this RPM: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/kernel-of-the-day/x86_64/kernel-default-2.6.5-7.69cvs20040607145541.x86_64.rpm ? Moritz -- "Sie haben neue Mails!" - Die GMX Toolbar informiert Sie beim Surfen! Jetzt aktivieren unter http://www.gmx.net/info

I load this file onto my disk into /tmp. When I open this file with the Konqueror, the RPM-Viewer shows me the details and I can choose "Install with Yast". When I do this, Yast asks for the DVD and installs again the DVD Kernel 2.6.4 but not the new 2.6.5-7. How can I install the new kernel? Moritz

rpm -Uhv

I installed the new kernel successfully, but C'n'Q doesn't work. When I make modprobe powernow_k8 dmesg | grep powernow I get Powernow_k8: unsupported module, tainting kernel Powernow_k8: found 1 AMD Athlon 64 Processor (Version 1.00.09d) Powernow_k8: BIOS error: NUMPST must be 1 And when I say Cpufreqd I get Can't open /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_gouvernor File not found And cat throttling Reports Not supported What can I try now? Thanks for help, Moritz

Windows XP, Windows XP64 Bit run fine with C'n'Q, why not Linux? Is there no possibility to enable C'n'Q manually? Moritz

I downgraded from F7 to F6 bios of my Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro and now C'n'Q works fine under Suse 9.1 64Bit and under XP. The reason for the F7 Bios was, to enhance the C'n'Q support for some 64 Bit Oss. Thanks for Your help. I will send a message to Gigabyte to fix the F7 bios version. Moritz

You have a C0-Stepping version of the Athlon 64 3000+ that throttles down to 800MHz but with a higher core voltage. My CPU is a CG-stepping, that wasn't supported in the release version of the 2.6.4 kernel. And, the new F7 Bios has wrong entries in a value table. Now I downgraded to F6 version of the GA-K8VT800 Pro Bios. Moritz -- +++ Jetzt WLAN-Router fr alle DSL-Einsteiger und Wechsler +++ GMX DSL-Powertarife zudem 3 Monate gratis* http://www.gmx.net/dsl
Hello, Since over 7 years I'm testing Linux and Suse, and I would have been surprised, if the setup of the dial up connection would work without any trouble! I configure the dial up connection with Yast2, and my modem is recognized correctly (AT ISDN terminal adapter on serial port ttsy0, init string ATZ and ATB8 for PPP, connection speed fixed to 115200). Then I choose the MSN internet connection. But when I start Kinternet dial up, the modem is not initialized, no connection will be established. I try this now since hours, and I don't know, what else to do. With Windows, I never had this trouble, with Linux I have it each time I install it. Maybe this is the reason, people are frustrated about Linux. Moritz
