Hi folks, He have a 2 way here without a DVD that we need to update to 9.1 as part of an eval for procurement. As a hack, I set up an webserver on the 4 way (9.1) to host the DVD as it's root. So, I told Yast that this was the installation source and disabled the other 2 CD's as installation sources (SUSE/UnitedLinux). So, then I did a system update. It was able to do a few packages and then failed on about 700 packages. Yast provided no clue why, but I'm sure it's a dependency issue. So my question is, how can I update this 8.0 box to 9.1 using a DVD in another systems drive? Thanks for any help. Phil

See http://www.suse.de/~nashif/autoinstall/multiplesource.html on how to set up a suse network installation source. It is for SLES8-SP3, but applies near completely to 9.1 too. -Andi

are there any instructions there for a remote upgrade? i didnt check the whole documentation of autoinstall, but i found some apt related pages for suse linux remote upgrades http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/
Hi Andi, I'm a reasonably capable engineer, but this document confused me a bit...Can you clarify it a bit for me? I understand that the boot CD needs the /yast/order file in order to specify my http:// source which is the original 9.1 DVD. It looks like I don't need the /yast/instorder file since I only have one source. However, I do not have a boot CD for 9.1. How do I make one on which to put the /yast/order file? That part I couldn't find in the document. I do know how to make iso images and the like, so if you point me in the right direction, that would help. Thanks. The order files are loaded from the network source. Just use F3 -> http install and point it to the URL. To boot you can use the boot iso image from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/x86_64/9.1/boot/boot.iso -Andi
Hi Andi, This worked well, thanks for the tip on where to get that boot disk. One other thing, in rebuild of the latest 2.6.5 kernel on the SUSE website, despite setting the CFGNAME and CFGRELEASE in the .config via 'make config', the kernel is always built with 'default' as the tag line. Modules and installation work as expected, with the right 'CFG' variable. Grepping through the makefiles, I couldn't find the reference to 'default' except in arch/x86_64/defconfig. Any suggestions? as far as i know and have read all over the net is, that suse doestn support an upgrade scenario when you dont actually boot the box for real from the new media. there is no upgrade from within the old system. once you boot from the new media, it detects that an old suse x.yz system is installed on your hard disks, and will offer you an upgrade scenario. this is what i know so far. this seems to be true for suse retail boxes of non-business products (suse linux professional etc...) i dont know the exact details about the suse servers. i suppose upgrade is possible there though. but then again, i think i once found some websites talking about this very problem, and offering some hacks and apt/rpm packages and some little scripts and howtos on how to upgrade manually through an ssh account and transfering some files. but i dont know the exact details anymore and never tried it. again, it was not supported by suse and not really an easy or official way if i remember correctly. cheers, andy
Hi,

So, I told Yast that this was the installation source and disabled the other 2 CD's as installation sources (SUSE/UnitedLinux).
Suse update works better when booting from the new media. Since amd64 is only on DVD I suggest you get the boot.iso from a local ftp mirror of suse for 9.1 x86_64 That one should be able to update using your local http repository and not stop. BB, Arjen
