good day all ... we have one of these systems from penguin computing. it has 8GB ram and a full complement of U320 scsi disks. i am having stability problems with every OS i've put on: SLES8/SP9.0 and SP9.1. the system seems to install correctly but always seems to fail on reboot the first time in a rather inconsistant state. has anyone been able to get this hardware config running under suse? the hdama bios is at 1.84 and the megaraid bios is G112 and the server bios is 3.6 i think. i could really use a sanity check on this one, thanks! -- michael

Hi, I have two of these motherboards, one with 8GB ram and an Adaptec ASC-29320 and one with 4GB ram and 3ware Escalade 7508 IDE-raid. Both running with SLES 8, both stable. I have noticed on the one with 8GB ram that it's _very_ picky about the quality of ram. IIRC there has been 64bit issues with the LSI controller, have you checked for an updated driver version? hmmm ..... no, not done that. the installer worked fine, which maybe mislead me, will do this too -- michael
Having similar issues here, and just got off the phone with PC support. My issue appears to be related to the SCSI subsystem. On boot, some drives are not recognized at all, or are regonized as the wrong type. On occasion, the system boots and hangs early on boot. About 1 out of 10 times it boots fine and runs stable (haven't run it for more then a couple days so far, but thats due to me rebooting it intentionally to work out the boot problems). My system is the Altus 3200, same motherboard as yours, 16 GByte of RAM, LSI SCSI card (not RAID), 7 143GByte drives. Couple things I tried: - unplug / insert all drives (some had come lose during shipping) - plug SCSI card into different PCI slots - reseat all the SCSI connectors. It also takes VERY long (10-30 min) to scan all the SCSI drives on some occasion. Usually, they are recognized as the wrong type in this case. One suggestion from Penguin was to disable "auto detection" in the SCSI card's BIOS. But I don't think there is an 'auto detection' setting. The drives are all marked as 320/80 speed ,16 bit. Hi Johannes! good suggestions, it looked like the system had some rough handling during shipment, i will reseat everything and think i will reinitialize the raid array as well. thanks! michael On Thu, 17 Jun 2004, Johannes B. Ullrich wrote:
