Guys, I am keen to write a how to but need a bit of help getting started. Can anyone help me out with the following questions: - What are some easy tools to write it in - What format does it need to be in - How do I get the style right - How do I get it reviewed - How do I submit it to the opensuse site There is some good info on the opensuse site but I cant get the answers to all of these questions. Hi! For the translation of the opensuse manuals, there is any .po repository or the process is download the source, translate the .xml files (using xml2po) convert to .xml again (po2xml), create a build service account and package the opensuse manuals in your language to distribute it? If this is the process, is that hard to do something like KDE does? Hi all First: I haven't received a message from this list since Mar 2008 - is this just a fault in my configuration or is this list really so quiet? But my initial reason for "pinging" here is the great success in the openSUSE Education team: we're using your "Lessons for lizzards" book as base for our openSUSE Education handout [1]. Thanks for your great work in this area of "pre-configuring" a useful book format in xml! Currently I'm working to get the openSUSE-Education book build within the build process of a RPM, so packaging pre-build pdf's and html (as currently done in LfL) should not be necessary any more. Thanks to Thomas who's helping me much in this area. The openSUSE-Education handout currently contains some package descriptions for gcompris, italc, LTSP and Tuxpaint. Perhaps these descriptions can also be used in the Lessons for Lizzards book? Other question: I like to integrate some of the current LfL articles (for example: the KDE-kiosk one) in the openSUSE-Education handout - is this ok for you? I've been trying to build the book as described in the LfL Quick Start guide, but keep getting stopped by an error: "unable to open image 'images/print/kde-kiosk_add_profile.png': No such file or directory." This is my first post to the list. I'm interested in writing for or otherwise contributing to the SUSE documentation team. I'm a librarian, a SUSE user (since 2004), have some training in Linux/Unix systems administration, and I'm familiar with SGML and DocBook. I'm not a developer, but I'd like to contribute to Documentation any way I can; indexing, writing, proofing, mark-up, whatever the need is at the moment. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Hi, there is now a bugfix release available on my openSUSE Build Server repository: Changelog: - Corrected Requires keywords and added version numbers for openSUSE Build Server in SPEC file - Corrected behavior of checking xml-commons-resolver (actually it is provided by two packages: xerces-j2 and xml-commons-resolver) Also a bug with JAVACMD in suse-fop, found by Marcus Schäfer - Fixed xsl:preserve-space for titles (xslt/fo/docbook.xsl) - Fixed index title in xslt/fo/index.xsl - Support for optipng (reduces size of PNG graphics) - Corrected FOP font issue (Thanks to Nikolay Derkach, see thread [1]). The only new feature is the "optipng shrinking process" from Berthold. It was necessary to reduce the size of our PDF and this can be done easily by optimizing the size of your PNG graphics. It is not required by the build process, so if you do not have optipng and exiftools installed, it will not touch your PNG files. Please update the susedoc RPM with your favorite installation tool (YaST, zypper, smart, ...). In case you use YaST and haven't added the respective repository, read [2] for more information. If you want to download the RPM package manually, find it under [3]. Choose your distribution and select "noarch". Look for susedoc-4.2_*.noarch.rpm. However, you have to resolve the RPM dependencies manually. Hi, the last update took me longer than expected. Here is a new version of our XML build environment susedoc. These are the changes of the latest release: XSLT Stylesheets: * Rewrote some parts of desktop/docbook.xsl for generating .desktop files (generally, interesting for packagers only) * Language corrections from Patrick Tinley and Nikolay Derkach (Russian) * Applied smaller font size for legal text for stylesheets in directories "fo" and "flyer" See /usr/share/susedoc/xslt/ChangeLog for detailed information Makefile Mechanic: * Integrated dia and added conversion dia -> svg. Hi there! Pretty much time passed since my previous post (probably half a year). Since that time may things have changed. Much fun with building the whole infrastructure of our portal http://svn.team.org.ru:8000/trac (trac itself, SVN, daily pdf autobuild and such), hacking novdoc and XEP, initial transition - all this fun had turned into everyday routine of translating string by string day by day. Nevertheless, we proudly announce that translation of 10.2 documentation is finished! Our documentation includes the following guides (here are the links for daily builds): openSUSE Start-Up: http://svn.team.org.ru:8000/trac/browser/pdf/ru-daily/opensuse-kdequick-dai… KDE Quick Start: http://svn.team.org.ru:8000/trac/browser/pdf/ru-daily/opensuse-kdequick-dai… GNOME Quick Start: http://svn.team.org.ru:8000/trac/browser/pdf/ru-daily/opensuse-gnomequick-d… Current state of the 10.2 cycle is RC (means that still there are some defects or typos there). Localized screenshots are done only for kde-quick. Most likely we shall not announce widely our 10.2 translations as we want to go further and 10.3 will be released soon. Packages for openSUSE in the Build Service and HTML builds are in my agenda. We want to participate in 10.3 translations. And I have several questions: I've noticed that opensuse-manual has been recently updated to the new (10.3) version. Though further investigation revealed that it's just partly updated (gnome-quick hasn't been updated at all, kde-quick and startup have old 10.2 screenshots). So, I wonder when the documentation team will finish their work, when will stabilisation occur? I ask because we want to update our translations in time for 10.3, hopefully there will be not much work. Again wrt. to the above issues I ask if SVN for this documentation is planned in the nearest future? I know there are also German translations for opensuse-manual. Hence you probably know how translation is organized there? I mean how do they update translations from one version to the next? Simply making diffs and merging or? Please explain us as we want this process to run as smoothly as possible. Finally, one more question (most likely to coolo or AJ): is it possible to include our translation into the distribution? Because I am soon leaving the company (on friendly terms), I am no longer maintainer of the style project. I do not know any details of the future of this project at the present time. I hope management will provide details once it has had the opportunity to consider the options and make plans. Maintaining the style guide is a big responsibility, so finding a replacement may take some time and they may need to consider other alternatives. hi all ! As the beta area nears, with Beta 1 I won't add any new material to the LfL anymore, until SUSE 11.x cycle starts. Current status: LfL has many incomplete articles, and I would like to discuss about the possibility of "disabling" them - that is the source code will remain as-is, but those articles should become invisible from the main "index" page. Sorry for cut in here... but I would like to clarify that in most languages the translation for the term 'repository' within the context of software has approved translation since a long time... this term is not new to the industry nor exclusive to opensuse... so we should maintain what the industry is using in each language. A repository in the computing environment is understood as a storage house for data.... and some languages will have a direct translation, like for e.g. Spanish where the translation is 'repositorio' and other languages may have a different.. but I am sure all languages will have one as this term is an old concept already. That said, I do understand JDD's comment, that sometimes this term used in other context mean exactly what he is referring to... but in this case, translators needs to confirm what is the most widely approved translation for it in their locales. So, please, do not leave in English unnecessarily. Hi, I have decided to learn more about openSUSE including compiling from source, which files to edit to change certain settings and configurations etc. Would the Lfl be the right place to start? I have downloaded the lessons4lizards-fop.pdf file and wonder if this is the right file and if there is a mailing list that could inform me of updates or a new file that has been uploaded? [opensuse-doc] How to name that thing? Repository/installation source/Catalog...

The discussions on the various mailing lists on how to name "that thing" have culminated in a face to face discussion in Prague yesterday where the systems management stakeholder took the input from the community and the usages in current openSUSE and Novell products in consideration. The goal was to have one technical term that we can use use in a consistent way in future new openSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise release - in software, documents, wiki etc. The decision was to use "repository". Other names considered where "installation source" and "catalog". So, yes we now have a management decision ;-) to name it "repository". I'm asking now the developers and documentation guys to change their texts and use it in new texts. On the other hand I ask everybody to give them some time and not file bug reports against documentation and software that uses the old names in openSUSE 10.3. Let's make it perfect for the release after - unless the teams can easily do this and tell us "file bugs" ;-) Regards, Andreas P.S. [opensuse-doc] Drupal?

I've been poking around in Wikis, looking for a way to simplify doc collaboration... Wikis always seem to fall short (as we've discussed here)... lacking structure and so on. I started looking into Drupal this morning as a possible alternative to Wikis. At first glance, it would appear to have some of the functionality missing in Wikis, while still maintaining a relatively low entry barrier for contributors. Has anyone here tried out or invesitgated Drupal for documentation?
