Playing DVDs on AMD64 system

Has anyone managed to get any DVD playing software running properly under SuSE 9 for the AMD64? I've got an ASUS K8V Deluxe MB and an NVIDIA GF5200FX video card, for what that's worth. I've been trying, with little success, to compile a working version of the 'Ogle' DVD player, but am running into all sorts of dependency issues with RPMs, and missing library issues compiling from source. If someone else has gotten this working, I'd be interested in hearing exactly what RPMs/source files you used and what steps you followed. Sound problems after last kernel update

Hello list! After the update to kernel 2.6.5-7.111 (SuSE 9.1 Professional) I have problems with my sound hardware. After a reboot the soundcard is not accessible. When I remove the soundcard in YaST and readd it it works like before. There is no error in dmesg or /var/log/messages. apache / php sessions.

On my production boxes I am still running apache 1.3 / php and postgresql with no problems. I decided to start working with my amd-64 and have had grief. Using SuSE 9.1 it only has apache 2 on the dvd. (To put apache 1.3 on the box I reckon I would have to compile). Ok, I had a brief fling with 2 some time ago so it should be no problem. Get apache going and then the pages which used to work fine I now see the following: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: session_start() in /usr/share/php/includes/config.osca.inc on line 2 Fire up phpinfo and I don't even see sessions enabled anywhere. Did I miss something or were sessions disabled in what suse shipped? And if disabled, how can I enable (bet its recompile) --- Dr. Roy F. NIS Client OK?

I'm having trouble configuring my amd64 boxes as NIS Clients. The ypbind daemon can't connect to the server. x86 boxes on the same network can. All are running SuSE 9.1, in appropriate x86 and amd64 versions of course. I'm baffled. I've tried running ypbind -debug, but all it says is repeated "yp ping" of the NIS servers, which seemingly don't respond. As I said, only my amd64 boxes have this problem. Are there any known issues with NIS and amd64? I've tried following various troubleshooting guides I found on the 'net, but I'm no NIS expert and I might of course have overlooked something obvious. new install on AMD64 x86 with "slight" X-windows problem

Ok, so I finally got all the bits and pieces I wanted for my 64 bit box together and have run into a slight problem. My 19" Monitor is capable of displaying 1280x1024, but only @ 75Hz. Yast seemed to detect the correct frequency range while I was installing, but when X/KDE started up my monitor reported that they sync rate was out of range. I switched to a terminal and logged in then ran YAST in text mode, but seem to be unable to change the refresh rates reported that are probed. How can I change the default refresh rate that X/KDE uses? I amsume that there is a config file I can edit while logged into a terminal, but after (a very short) google attempt I could not locate an answer. thanks Lance

What is an equiv. nVidia card for the ATI 9000?

well, after seeing several posts to the effect that ATI doesn't have 64 bit drivers while nvidia does, it seems it is time to switch alliances ;) I currently have an ATI 9000 ["powered by" rather than "built by"], and I'm wondering what the closest rough equivalent is in the nvidia line -- an unusually helpful Fry's guy tells me it would be about the same as a 5500 series card [seems he plays games too... :) ] Depending on brand, the cost seems to range from $90 to $150. They had one [returned] 5700 "LE" board for about $10 more, and then everything jumps to the 6800 series at $300 or $400 [with the higher price going for twice the memory at 1ghz memory speed vs. 700mhz] Since I've just upgraded to a 64 bit system, I'm a little hesitant to dump another $400 into this [kind of makes the overall cost of my upgrade sound less fantastic, since this will push it into the $1600+ range] I'd really like to stick with ATI, but if the drivers aren't there, well, it gets to be time to move on... :(

xpdf update fails on some files

I did a YOU update on my SuSE 9.1 x86_64 box, which included the latest xpdf. xpdf hangs up on some files with the message (twice) Missing charset in String to FontSet conversion Files produced by pdflatex are usually the problem. The failure also occurs on 32-bit SuSE. I've had to reload the xpdf from the original CD. The xpdf-config rpm is also installed. Does it also need to be updated? If so, where? Thank you. Joe Comfort

Why don't they mention the Opteron?

Hello everyone, It seemed odd to me that while checking SuSE's site, they don't mention the Opteron as a supported processor for SuSE 9.2 Prof. Besides mentioning I386, they mention Athlon and EMT64, but not the Opteron... Hi, 1) i have this motherboard MSI K8N Neo-54G (nforce3), and under suse 9.1 via yast, if i select the module hardware info my wi-fi card is beiing recognized as RaLink RT2500 802.11 Cardbus Reference Card. But when i go to the network devices -->network card it doesn't appear there. What can i do? 2) I installed the drivers from nvidia and the procedre went well. But i can;t really use ute onboard lan? I changed the modprobe.conf by putiing the line alias eth1 nvnet, but what can i do then? (i allready have another network card which yast recognized it and name it eth0)

Quake 3 Install Problem

I've been attempting to install quake3 on my amd64 box but receive the follow error message when I run the install script: "This installation doesn't support glibc-2.1 on Linux / x86_64 (tried to run setup) Please contact Id software technical support at bugs(a)idsoftware.com, or ttimo(a)idsoftware.com The setup program seems to have failed on x86_64/glibc-2.1" Has anyone else run into this problem and know of a workaround? SuSEfirewall2で気になったこと

今井です。 9.1のSuSEfirewall2(/etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2)をごそごそいじってて気づいたんですが....。 FW_SERVICES_EXT_RPC(ポート番号が一意じゃないんでrpcinfoコマンド発行して通すポート番号を決定するタイプ)でNIS関係を通す様に設定したのはいいんですが、Linux起動時にネットワーク起動する前にSuSEfirewall2_init あたりの処理(実際は/sbin/SuSEfirewall2コマンド内部ですね)でどうもrpcinfo コマンド発行しちゃってるらしくポートマッパーと接続できないなんていうメッセージを出してくれてます。ポートマッパー起動前なのでそういうエラーが出るのも当り前ではありますが。あと、Squid使ってるんでFW_SERVICE_SQUID="yes"にしとくと SuSEfilrewall2_init、SuSEfirewall2_setup辺りで「Squid起動してません」というメッセージ出てきてるんですけどこれもちょっと間抜けと言えば間抜けですね。 FW_SERVICES_EXT_RPCがらみで同じ9.1のNISサーバーとなってるマシンでも SuSEfirewall2動かしてる場合、NISサーバーでもypbind動かしてないとクライアントからの接続を拒否しちゃってる様な気が.....。(当然と言えば当然ですが....) /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2あれこれいじれるんだけどyastで対応しきれてないのが少し悲しいですね。9.2でも消化不良になってそうだし.....。 -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 今井優 mail: maimai(a)coral.ocn.ne.jp web: http://www10.ocn.ne.jp/~masimai/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The USB stick is a 10/100 network card (wired). That is what I was wondering wether or not the boot CD would have drivers for to be able to do a network install from the laptop's NFS... NVIDIA GL drivers 32/64 libraries

Hi all - I'm slowly getting my new AMD system together. Most everything is going smoothly. I installed the NVIDIA drivers using YaST, and didn't appear to have any problems. However, trying to run some of my old GL games (quake3, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2003) it appears none of them work. Looking into it a bit, it looks like the NVIDIA drivers only install into /usr/lib64, and the drivers in /usr/lib are the Mesa software drivers. I downloaded and unpacked the NVIDIA driver software, and in the download there is a /usr/lib32 directory with 32-bit 6111 drivers. Unfortunately, when I try to get the GL games to run using those drivers, they segfault shortly after trying to initialize the GL viewport. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello I've spent two days wrestling, googling and asking but cannot get the onboard Gigabit LAN (3Com 3C940) to work on this board. Can anyone lend me a hand? I've had to put a cheap PCI card to get out to the world. I know that the onboard sound is a lost cause (?) but it would be sad to lose two PCI slots. I've been to syskonnect's site and tried the sk98lin module but that did not seem to do anything (apparently the driver is supposed to work with the 3Com chipset; maybe I'm way off). I would like to build a couple more of these boxes for my friends and family... TIA&Cheers

Hi, I've tried getting the latest Kernel patch through YOU for the last few days and every time I get an error that the RPM has an invalid signature! I looked at the Yast Log and pulled out and ran the following command: rpm --checksig /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/x86_64/update/9.1/rpm/x86_64/kernel-default-2.6.5-7.111.x86_64.rpm this gave me: /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/x86_64/update/9.1/rpm/x86_64/kernel-default-2.6.5-7.111.x86_64.rpm: sha1 MD5 GPG NOT OK uname -a gives me: Linux espresso 2.6.5-7.108-default #1 Wed Aug 25 13:34:40 UTC 2004 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux So the question is how do I get it back to being OK? can I just delete kernel-default-2.6.5-7.111.x86_64.rpm and try again? We're unable to successfully compile Apache (2.0.52) with SUSE 9.1 (2.6.4-52-default) 64bit . We have no problems with the 32bit version of SUSE 9.1 and Apache 2.0.52.. A fresh install of 9.1 started us out. Apache 2.0.52 was downloaded, gunzipped, untarred and configure was run. It fails at the make. grub-install under SuSE 9.0 rescue mode

Hello, I'm installing GRUB into MBR after some unsuccessful (for MBR part) HDD cloning. Now I have (in the server) 1 HDD w/all filesystems ready, and want to install GRUB into MBR. grub-install is in separate /usr HDD partition. I loaded in rescue mode from SuSE 9.0 for x86-64 distribution media. I mounted root-FS under /mnt mounting point; mkdir /usr2 and mount "usr" pаrtition (/dev/hda5) w/grub-install under /usr2 mount point. /usr2/sbin/grub-install contains references to /usr/blah/..., so I changed grub-install script w/replacing of all of the /usr occurences to /usr2. But now ./grub-install --root-directory=/mnt --debug /dev/hda finished w/errors like /usr2/sbin/grub --batch --device-map=/mnt/boot/grub/device.map no such file or directory Sorry, where am I wrong - and what should I correct ? I love SuSE!!!!!!! anyway, I always copy the installation media to my harddrive and change source so I never have to supply media when adding packages to my install. Is there a way to easily gut the 32-bit code out of the installation media to reduce the footprint on my drive? B-)

My original installation (around January 04) had the same trouble with the gbit NIC, so I put the plain vanilla Linksys in. A month ago I suffered a hard drive failure and had to re-install. I initially had the network cable connected to the Linksys - Suse installed and went through the online update cycle. At some point I noticed that both NICs were registered and active so I switched to the mobo g-bit NIC and have been using it ever since. I don't have a clue as to what update caused it to start working but I won't argue with success! I use it for a game server - the Linksys is set to a static local IP for when the box is here for repairs, the g-bit is set to the static global IP for when it is at its co-location site. I also have a plain K8v running Suse 9.1 at home and the g-bit card was detected and functional from the start with it. Also, when I first got the system, I also had trouble with the sound - someone else here on this list suggested going into the audio control panel and making ALL the settings 100% - this worked & I had sound after that. Right now it makes no difference since my box is on-site & only has power and network cords connected to it! Hi -- I just upgraded my asus sk8v to four GB of RAM (dual-boot with Windows and Suse 9.1 worked fine with two GB of RAM). Windows boots and shows two GB of RAM. However 9.1 (AMD 64) hangs from both the installation CD and the hard disk. I may have misconfigured the hardware but I thought it was strange that Windows would boot and 9.1 wouldn't. Thought I'd drop a note to let fellow laptop users know that it was very easy to install and configure the synaptics driver from http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/touchpad/index.html for the Alps touchpad on that laptop. All you have to do is follow the INSTALL doc and use the configuration from the README.alps and VIOLA! horizontal scrolling works! Yipeeee! B-)

xfs + lvm + suse9.1 problem

I have been trying to get some 3TB raids online by merging the two sub-2TB luns into a 3TB LV using LVM in Suse 9.1. Problem is, when I go to format the logical volume in xfs it hangs, then upon subsequent reboot the machine hangs at nfsboot (sm_notify). If I use Reiser or JFS this does not happen. Also, how do I boot the machine around this nfsboot hangup? Failsafe does not work. Thanks, Joe

Hello, I just got a Dell precision 470 with a Nvidia FX 3400 and I installed the 64bit version of Suse 9.1 on it. The installation was successful and Suse is running fine. However, it could not recognise my graphics card and installed a VESA driver instead. I then downloaded the Nvidia driver amd64 and installed it without error message. If I now run sax2 in "init 3" without parameter I have the chance to chose the graphics card but my 3400 is not in the list. I am new to the list and sorry if these questions are allreaedy answered. 1.I am trying to comile Mplayer 1pre5. My configure script is /configure --with-x11libdir=/usr/X11R6/lib64 --libdir=/usr/lib64 --prefix=/usr --disable-fbdev --enable-gui --enable-menu But is there anyway to compile mplayer using also win32-support? When i enable this option the compile crashes when using wine, since ( i think ) it doesn't support 64 bit. 2.I compiled succesufully xine-lib (with a lot of problems since some libraries like theora, libvorbis since the compilation stops so i had to disable them). But when i try to compile gxine it says cannot find -lXtst and stops. Whats wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Help Request- converting Raid root drives for 2.6.8+ boot

Hi all, Since 2.6.8.1 + kernels, the kernel is unable to find my raid arrays. I have searched and found that riadstart is deprecated and broken. (raidstart is what suse uses by default), I have since installed upto date mdadm tools, and tried setting up a /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf with my raid drives, and also reruning mkinitrd for my new kernels with root specified. But the kernel still refuses to boot my root partition. I boot off a non raided partition sda1 and also have swap on a non raided partition sdb1. laptop console video problem

Well, I got the HP zv5000 and LOVE IT! I was able to get SuSE 9.1 on it without too much trouble. Got the nvidia driver working and the widescreen (1280x800) resolution running. I know the boadcom wireless isn't going to work until 9.2 (hint hint hint). I am only having one problem and have one request The problem I'm having is that once X has loaded, I cannot ever get back to a console, virtual or otherwise. I mean I can get to it, I just can't see it. The screen is messed up. Is there a way to fix this? I seem to remember some trouble I had way back when with SuSE 6 something and nvidia where I had to disable the graphical boot screens to stop the issues. Any ideas? The request would be that I remember seeing somewhere that someone was able to enable the touchpad scrolling feature with an aps kernel patch. Anyone heard of this or know where I might find more information? Thanks in advance B-)

Thanks to the folks at 3ware we now have a released 64bit driver for their 9000 series SATA controllers...Kudos goes out to 3ware! If any of the information I provide below is inaccurate based upon your experience please reply and post your correction(s). There are a few gotchas that admins (that are not Linux masters) may want to be aware of before pulling down the latest kernel update using YOU. (This may only apply for a short period as I do not know if 3ware plans to get their code into SuSE's kernel tree before the next kernel update so it will then be a supported module.) For those that install directly to the SATA RAID array, if you do not follow the steps below your system will not find the raid array after you reboot to activate the kernel update resulting in a kernel panic and your OS not loading. (NOTE: If the kernel update breaks compatibility this method may not work and therefore you are screwed!) For those that installed to a IDE disk you will need to do as you did initially or follow the steps below if you don't want to recompile a new module. 1) After y.o.u. completes the updates DO NOT reboot. 2) copy the 3w-9xxx.ko from /lib/modules/<old version>/kernel/driver/scsi and /lib/modules/<old-version-override>/ to /lib/modules/<new version>/kernel/driver/scsi and /lib/modules/<new-version-override>/ 3) add line for 3w-9xxx dependencies in the new modules.dep (copying the old mod-dep line and modifying it worked nicely). 4) ensure that 3w-9xxx is still in the INITRD_MODULES parameter in /etc/sysconfig/kernel. 5) run mkinitrd You can then reboot and the driver will load at boot thereby allowing you to use your OS that is installed directly to the raid array. Since I don't know if 3ware plans to get their source into SuSE supported modules list I would have to say installing directly to the raid array would be risky for a production server. Since I experienced weird behavior for a directory mounted raid array (kernel reporting segmentation faults for moves and copies of files to the raid array but not from it) I am not sure if installing to a IDE disk is such a good idea either. According to a fellow from 3ware support, 3ware's code will be part of the 2.6.8 kernel source tree so if SuSE 9.2 is going to use that kernel version of later then ya gots no worries about any of the stuff I babbled on about here.

Hello, Does anybody know whether SuSE 9.1 for AMD64 will support hardware RAID 5 with the Adaptec 2410SA (Serial ATA) adapter? I'm configuring a Tyan motherboard (Thunder K8W S2885) with dual boot between SuSE 9.1 and Win XP (unfortunately). While Linux will support software RAID, Windows will not. First, what kind of capacity are you talking about? With the new crop of high capacity IDE drives, you can get very high storage density for pretty low price, so you may be able to get what you need with fewer drives. But if you realy need 20 drives, you may not have a simple solution. Most 3.5" drives will generally require about 15 watts each to operate. So for 20 of them, you will need a power supply to be able to sustain 300W output, so a 450W power supply will be a minimum recommended size just for them. I don't know if anyone makes a computer enclosure that can hold that many drives, so it means installing them in an external chassis of some sort. Then there is the problem of connecting them to the IDE interfaces on your computer; I don't think IDE cables, even the fancy round ones, can be more than a couple feet long, and most of them are for connections within the same cabinet. This means you need some form of controller to convert the protocol into something that can be driven over a meter outside of the enclosures, like SCSI or FCAL. So this implies some kind of RAID controller for the drives and a SCSI or FCAL HBA. There are a number of sources for low-cost RAID systems using IDE drives and SCSI or FCAL host interfaces. This is a rack-mount system, but the desk-top model is the same unit with rubber feet and no rack mount slides. eyc

I hope someone can help me. I am running SUSE 9.1 on my emachines m6805 in 64-bit mode. I recently used YOU to update the kernel from the kernel shipped with 9.1 up to 2.6.5-7.108. After this upgrade and re-booting, my laptop does not appear to be initializing the ethernet adapter properly. I have been using DHCP to configure the IP parms. Prior to the update, this worked just fine. After the update, DHCP times out and does not set the ip information correctly. I thought I saw something on this list previously, but cannot find it now. Any ideas/help? Pete

As I plan to make a nice "little" numbercruncher of a AMD 64 bit system My head just hit the wall. I would like the system to be able to take around 10 to 20 harddrives. This will be needed because of the amount of testdata and for temporary backups. Now this will need to have some power to make that possible. I would like to avoid a RACK system as they are quite expensive (yes money does matter to some extent ;-) ). OK I'm not a wizard in power supplies so I need some help on this (very badly) Have any of you out there seen something like this available in europe (OK or elsewhere) and do you have any idea how much such a cute thing would cost: If there's alternatives to this solution I'm all ears/yours. 3ware was unable to get their 9500S SATA RAID Controller module source in the 2.6 kernel x86_64 tree in time. As a result I have a unsupported external module compiled from their sources using the kernel-syms to thwart kernel version dependence. I placed the module in the /lib/modules/<kernel version>-override directory since I cannot have a kernel update render my RAID array inaccessible. I could not find any detailed information relating to the use of this directory but I would hope someone here could inform me of the implications of doing so. Essentially this will be a production database server (very soon) and I need to be able to keep the system up to date using Y.O.U., will I have to bypass the kernel updates and do them manually in conjunction with the raid module rebuild? System = Dual AMD Opteron 64, 4GB RAM running SuSE 9.1 installed from distro disk. Thanks all for any help you may provide.

I have a Tyan S2885 with the sil3114 onboard raid controller. I have it working under Suse 9.0. My question is will it work under 9.1? Tyan's website has a driver for up to Suse 9.0, and Silicon Image's website only has drivers up to Suse 8.2! Thanks, Joe

would like to replace a 4 year old Sony VAIO with a an AMD64 laptop. What experience is there ? What works? I looked at the AcerFerrari 3400 which looks good, except for the broadcom networking (both the 10/100/1000 RJ45 and the wireless are broadcom ) which I hear doesn't work well with OpenBSD. hello, just installed suse 9.1 pro and while the test sound during install worked i don't hear anything now except the odd awful sound for an error message. followed the instructions for this problem at support db steps 1 and 2, answer yes, and skip to step 13 but at step 14 i don't get the expected message, kamix simply restarts with no sound. thanks

Hello, i am new to this list and look for some help regarding the sendmsg system call. I like to find out why the the sendmsg system call works for AppleTalk DDP sockets on Suse 9.1/ia32 and fails on a 64 bit Suse 9.1 OS using the 32 bit existing binary. I have tried to investigate where the 32bit API parameters gets converted into 64 bit. I believe there could be a binary API bug. Is the directory "linux/arch/x86_64/ia32" at good place to look? It looks like the kernel will do booth system calls 32 bit and 64 bit. Has somebody an idea where the 32 syscall parameters are getting converted into 64 bit for the sendmsg system call? I checked already the size of the struct sockaddr_at, it is identical on 32 and 64 bit systems (16 bytes). At the end I have included a pre-processed code sequence where the sendmsg fails with Invalid argument error code. Mellanox Infiniband on SuSE 9.0 - xp0 module, etc

Dear colleagues ! I've some problem w/Mellanox IB software installation (in particular, the absence of xp0 kernel module). I've installed Infiniband HCA (PCI-X Infinihost MT23108 low profile) to upgarde my interconnect on Tyan S2880 under SuSE Linux 9.0 (2.4.21-243). It's official software platform supported by whole Mellanox IBHPC-0.5.0 software collection. 1)After minor source modification (in mosal.c) the installation (INSTALL script) was finished successfully. But after reboot I see that a) mst tools started successfully b) and I see then following boot messages: Setting up network interfaces : eth0 eth1 - both done ib0: modprobe: modprobe: can't locate module xp0 and ib0 interface is down (it's not connected through IB cable really). But I may do ib0 up manually; in particular, /etc/init.d/network start put ib0 in "up" state. I didn't find xb0.o in /lib/modules, and in any Mellanox software rpm's also ! What should I do now - and what/where is xp0 module ?? 2) I configured IPoIB at the installation. (To try IBsNice) I issued vapi start after boot, and see the message Loading mod_ib_mgt FAILED ("manual" modprobe mod_ib_mgt leads to init_module: device or reesource busy) If I run IBsNice, then I receive the same message about mod_ib_mgt but IBsNice create virtual eth2 , and ping to the IP of eth2 works normally. I'll be very appreciate if somebody clarify me this situation w/mod_ib_mgt ! 3) TO BE MORE CORRECT: pls take into account, that my host w/installed software& Mellanox hardware *isn't connected* currently with IB switch (i.e. is "standalone" server !) Experience with Acer Aspire 1501LCe

About a month ago during starup, the CDRW/DVD just put out gibberish instead of the model name etc., this was before it even got to booting up, so yesterday I called Acer Support in the UK with a view of sending it back to have it put right. Luckily as I was talking to Support, I noticed it was OK again. When asked what my operating system was I said it was Linux, no Windows! I was asked to hang on and when he came back he told me his manager said that Linux writes to the BIOS, which may have caused a corruption and that he couldn't help me. He said he had RedHat and Mandrake installed on a few machines there, but he'd never experienced the problem. Seeing as I'm usually polite and tolerant to begin with, I didn't tell him his manager was talking out of a strange piece of his anatomy. The fact that all seemed OK and I was able again to boot knoppix and access the unit, we ended the conversation. Now, Acer supplies laptops with Linux loaded, but XP Home Ed. on this one lasted as long as it took to boot once, then it was gone, so their reaction was a little strange, though somewhat expected. We are still seeing this sort of sick reaction to Linux from the manufacturers. Sometimes you need to get ratty, "Look pal, I'm quite capable of supporting Linux myself, if I needed Linux support, you'd be the last person on earth I'd ask." My friend Pete also had the folks at blueyonder.co.uk tell him that the customer's cablemodem problem was down to Linux even after he was told that the same problem was there using W2K, then he put the phone down on him. The customer called them back and gave them a rocket, they sent someone out to fix the cablemodem and gave him a free link upgrade to 1M. The guy they sent out was not Linux savvy, but he said he could test the modem out using Linux, which he did and passed on a useful tip, so we now know to point a browser at 192.168.100.1 and admin the cablemodem ourselves. May be we need to go on the offensive straight away, letting them know we don't want to hear "We don't support LINE-UX" when we have a genuine hardware problem. Hi, Recently Intel released 64-bit compatible compiler 8.1 which supports both Intel 64-bit x86 and AMD x86-64 chips. I wonder who has actually tried this new version of compiler on and AMD x86-64 system? I downloaded the non-commercial version of the compiler and installed on my Opteron system, however, only the 32-bit version can be installed. Hi, I have a filesystem driver using the map_user_kiobuf error = map_user_kiobuf(WRITE, user_mem, (unsigned long)buf, length_to_be_written); On this new kernel all 'dd' with bs>16k hangs the process and 'top' indicates it's spinning. cheetah:/home# dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=16834 count=10 <---hangs--> I see that this function has changed a bit in 2.4.21-241 and i am wondering if the new changes are causing this. The thread is looping in map_user_kiobuf and it can not be killed. Compiling Perl Modules (Frequencies.pm) and IVTV

I have a WinTV PVR 250 that I am trying to get working. After several false starts I was able to compile IVTV. I then tried to run the included utility to set the channel (ptune.pl) and came up with a message that I was missing the Frequencies.pm module, so I located the file it was included in - Video-Capture-V4l-0.224, unpacked it and attempted to compile it. The command I used was perl Makefile.pl This seemed to work fine, but when I try to run make, I get the following output (below). The relevant bit seemed to be about 6 rows from the bottom - a message that I should recompile with -fPIC I tried running perl Makefile.pl -fPIC make and got the same error. So what should I try next? Is there another way to set the channel on the card. I've tried xawtv (which crashes) and Kwintv (which realizes that there's a video card available, but doesn't recognize any input). I have a running vcr attached to the card (the card was intended for transferring old video tapes to dvds). Small RPM gotcha

Only a minor point, and I think I can wiggle my way around it, but as it might break scripts for others, I thought I should report it. The following is abstracted from a script by Detlef Steuer (Bcc'ed so that he doesn't get every followup...) to compute a list of required packages for a binary. Doesn't quite work on AMD64 as you will see: pd@linux:~/> ldd /usr/lib/R/modules/R_X11.so | grep jpeg libjpeg.so.62 => /usr/lib64/libjpeg.so.62 (0x0000002a95ace000) pd@linux:~/> rpm -q --whatprovides libjpeg.so.62 libjpeg-32bit-9.1-200404070910 I.e. 32 bit compatibility packages are found and not the correct 64 bit ones. One workaround seems to be based on pd@linux:~/> rpm -q --whatprovides 'libjpeg.so.62()(64bit)' libjpeg-6.2.0-320 which is a bit of a pain because the script is really like rpm -q --whatprovides `ldd ... | gawk '{print $1}' |....` and you have to deal with the fact that some elements come out with explicit paths, and RPM doesn't cope; only the latter of the following two will work: rpm -q --whatprovides '/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2()(64bit)' rpm -q --whatprovides 'ld-linux-x86-64.so.2()(64bit)' Another, simpler, workaround is to use the RHS of the "=>" in the ldd output (gawk '{print $3}'). Hi everybody! I am planing to buy a new desktop which will most probably be an amd64 system (e.g. www.deutschlandpc.de) I am listening to the list since quite a time to get an impression what the status of the 64bit Suse is for a "normal" user. Questions: 1. Most systems I saw do have an ATI graphic driver, which are not supported in 64 bit, right? What does that mean? No X? 2. I have a AVM Fritz! DSL card, is this one supported in 9.2? 3. Would it be better for a desktop to install the 32 bit version, because hw support is more complete? Thanx Raimund

X shut down compulsorily

I have a problem recently. It is forcing suddenly to terminate, while using X. Although I was looking to a problem solution sake at log file in order, I did not know after all where a cause was. The following is a part of XFree86.0.log when X falls. Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting This phenomenon was generated no less than 3 times within the past two weeks. It did not generate before. This has been a very serious problem, in order to end suddenly during work by X. I am using SUSE 9.1 Pro on Opteron 246 * 2. Aren't there those who know this cause? Hello Anirban I suggest you to buy a DSL modem for ethernet port. This is the best and easiest way for Linux system. A DSL modem on USB port implies a driver. I am using a Bewan ethernet modem with my Asus L5D laptop on which there are Suse 9.0 AMD64, SuSE 9.1 AMD64 and Win XP. A DSL ethernet modem should have an IP address by default, and even a small http server which allows to configure the modem from Mozilla or other (see the doc of the modem). If it is the case, notice the fixed IP address or modify it (for example : 192.168.1.1). Configure with Yast the ethernet card : attribute an IP address such as 192.168.1.2 if modem has 192.168.1.1, an mask address (255.255.255.0) , the gateway address is the IP address of the modem. Then go to the DSL modem configuration and put all the required data given by your access supplier. You manage your connection with kinternet. The used protocol should be PPPOe. Between laptop and ethernet modem you must have an ethernet crossed cable. About boot of XP : I use the bootloader of XP. I can select one of the three OS. I use lilo for Linux. Hi I got a DSL Connection from Bell South ( Bell South provided the DSL mode). I am using SuSe 9.1 on my Compaq 3240US laptop. I ran yast it do not detected the modem proeprly only some POPE compatibel device. Now how to setup DSL connect on my laptop. Hi I have a compaq 3240US laptop.I am running SuSe 9.1 64 bit on it. I am palning to get DSL connection so what modem should I buy so that I work. I am little bit disaapointed with my laptop since , modem , cardreader & the WiFi is not working. So at least DSL should work for me since then I can upgrade my system & hope that some of the device will work. Also I am having probel to dual boot XP. Generally in my desktop box I chain load XP even when it is on hda2. But in my laptop it is in hda1 but still can not chain load XP. GRUB loader will not start after bios upgrade

Hello, I upgraded my Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro board to F10 bios. But with the F10 bios the GRUB Linux boot loader will not start. The GRUB version is 0.94. GRUB only loads a consol with GRUB> where I can type some commands. I would like to use the F10 bios because of C'n'Q is automaticaly enabled e.g. when I'm in bios the CPU vcore is only 1.1V. Hi I have tried to compile krusader 1.4 file manager in SuSE 9.1 from source. but i always get the follwing message: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.1 (20021021)) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation! For more details about this problem, look at the end of config.log. Make sure that you have compiled Qt with thread support! However the QT library is installed .. I also followed the INSTALL documentation and i have the following echo $QTDIR /usr/lib/qt3 echo $KDEDIR /opt and i configure with the following command /configure --with-qt-dir=/usr/lib/qt3 --with-qt-includes=/usr/lib/qt3/include --with-qt-libs=/usr/lib/qt3/lib Any Ideas???? cannot open shared object file

I'm trying to get a 32bit application running (multi-gnome-terminal) using a generic binary tarball (I can't get it to build from source on my machine). However, I'm having problems with the shared libraries. The program installs fine, but when I run it I get:- multi-gnome-terminal: error while loading shared libraries: libglade-gnome.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've tried putting links to /opt/gnome/lib/libglade-gnome.so.0 in various places, but to no avail - I guess I don't really know what I'm doing :) I'd be grateful for some pointers. With SuSE 9.1 on an AMD64-3200 I've been trying to get some programs to run/install as su and I consistantly am encountering the following. Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: Invalid XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 key (failed key comparison) Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0 yes I have been doing the xhost localhost command as a standard user. I had one bank (of three) of RAM configured as a hot-spare. I tried reconfiguring in the BIOS to just use all the available RAM, and now the smp kernel recognizes more There is about 225MiB missing now, vs. 512MiB missing as before, which I guess is justifiable per attached email that Kevin sent me. I wonder why more RAM is lost when less is available? -- Cameron

Hello About your first question : I wrote a previous mail about 64 bits laptop. It is in this mailing list of October. If you want to use a 64 bits linux such as Suse 9.1, you should verify if the video part of the laptop is supported by 64 bits drivers. The main video cards for laptop with Athlon64 are based on ATI or nVidia chipsets. ATI does not supply a 64 bits drivers. Only nVidia supplies such a driver. My ASUS L5D series laptop is built with a nVidia gForce 5650 video and a nVidia gForce 3 150Go chipset for Athlon64. The Acer Aspire 1511 (or 151x) is based on the same chipset, the video is a gForce 5700. The previous one, the 1501 used an ATI video card and a VIA chipset. These two laptop are available in France. Hello all I could read on the Novell website some news about the next SuSE 9.2 (perso or pro). The address (french pages) : http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/overview.html It should be available on next november. The kernel is a 2.6.8 made in Suse of course ! (2.6.8.1 exactly ?). If you have a look in the previous mails (previous months) about PCMCIA and AMD64 laptops, you will see that there is a problem with PC cards (modem for example) and kernel 2.6.5 (SuSE 9.1). My question is for the SuSE developpers : can you tell if this problem is solved ? I could read in some previous mails that it should be solved in the kernel 2.6.8.0. I downloaded the standard kernel sources but I never compiled it : I prefer to use a SuSE kernel with a SuSe distrib :-) (I did not take the time to do it in fact). thans for your answers Pascal

update CD for SuSE 9.1 ?

Folks: Is there an update CD for 9.1? One of my systems (Tyan S2880 based dual 246) is freezing hard when yast fires up. To even get yast to fire up, I have to force a manual install, as the install process locks up on floppy.1: get nvram_ (or at least, that is the last thing on the console). By going the manual route, at least I can get yast going, before it locks. I have tried the safe and noacpi methods. I have tried direct DVD installs and network installs. No luck. 9.0 was also hard to get onto the machine, as a direct DVD install did not work, but a manual->nfs install did. If there is no 9.1 update CD (for AMD64), how soon will 9.2 be available to install? Hello List, I have been running Oracle 9i on a dual-Opteron system running the following kernel: Linux cumae 2.4.21-226-smp #1 SMP Tue Jun 15 09:04:44 UTC 2004 x86_64 unknown and I've been getting a lot of these messages in /var/log/messages: Oct 10 10:40:09 cumae modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-65 Oct 10 10:40:52 cumae last message repeated 30 times ... Does anyone know what this might be? Does this have something to do with major IDs of device special files? Checking /dev, I see files with major number of 65 are SCSI disk devices. I am running an Escalade 7508 PATA RAID card, which presents its drives to the OS as SCSI devices. BUt I have not had any problems with it. Any information will be appreciated. eyc

Help with HP Prolant DL145 Opteron Server install.

Grabbed a copy of Suse 9.1 64 bit version from my favorite mirror and got set up for an http install. The boot.iso works just fine, but when you get into the install process where it's detecting the hardware and loading modules it wants to load an mptscsih module for the LSI pci-x scsi card that's in the server. If I let it try to load it it just sits there and basically locks up (except for the spinning clock busy pointer). If I don't let it try to load this module, it can't find the drives. If I change the module name it wants to load to mptbase, it still can't find the drives. Same thing happens with the 32 bit version of Suse 9.1, incidentally. Hi All! I just have a quick question. After fixing the bug in SuSE 9.1 with sound (has something to do with Kmix and KDEMultimediasomethingorother), I have managed to get sound working. Unfortunately I have to shift the speaker connection from the green connector that Windows uses for sound, to a connector two places up the card (may be blue). Does anyone know what I can do to make SuSE use the green connector on the SBLive! card? I'm not a big fan of plugging and unplugging live devices at the back of the PC :-) My system is AMD 64 2800+ with SBLive sound card, running SuSE 9.1 Pro 64 Bit (and XP on another drive). 9.1 random lockup

Over the past couple weeks I've been noticing my system locking up more and more. I could be in the middle of something and BAM! everything freezes. Sorry, I forgot to ask if the second problem, about USB memory stick, is solved too. The problem is the same on an AMD64 laptop (Athlon64) or an AMD64 desktop (Opteron) with SuSE 9.1 and kernel 2.6.5 : it is not possible to read an USB 2.0 memory stick (an HyperDrive in this case). No problem with an USB 1.1 one. This problem does not exist with SuSE 9.0 AMD64 (kernel 2.4.21) on these same PCs. is there a significant progress for reading USB 2.0 memory sticks. Regards Pascal

Hi- I have a HP zv5000z which works well for my needs using both Linux SUSE 9.0 9.1 amd64 and XP Pro with cygwin. Graphics are well Bupported on 9.1 with Nvida drivers (I haven't tried sound). There is a forum on the zv5000v at http://www.notebookreview.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=713 I have maxed out memory at 2GB. Some complaints: The power supply is too heavy- The SF card reader has stopped working but I can't part with unit long enough to get it fixed. The screen (1680x1050) is nice for office but makes unit too big to conveniently use in coach on airplane. The unit draws too much power using my dc/ac converter and the HP brick power supply to use on airplane. The 80 GB disk (4200 rpm) is a performance dog. If a smaller and lighter (<2.5 kg) amd64 unit comes out I would probably replace this unit. However Sun is supposedly coming out with an operton notebook and I would suffer the size and weight for 4gb of memory. Hello Len, My experience with an AMD64 laptop began on last July. In France, the choice of AMD64 laptop is not very large : Acer Aspire 15xx, Asus L5D series, Targa Visionnary (only one time in LIDL shops). I bought the Asus L5D : Athlon64 3000+ 1Mo L2, 512 Mo DDR (3200 or 2700, I don't remember), HD 60 Go, video card nVidia gForce 5650 64 Mo, screen SXGA (1400x1050) (very beautiful colors !), chipset nVidia nForce3 Go150, wifi Broadcom, ethernet 10/100/1000, DVD reader/recorder -R/RW, 2 PCMCIA slots, //, serial, 4 usb 2.0, VGA output, SVideo output, ieee1394. A card 3n1 reader. IrDA. Battery : 2 hours. A very good laptop to my mind. On it : WinXP Pro (sorry), SuSE 9.0 AMD64 and SuSE 9.1 AMD64 with all updates by SuSE. Between the two SuSE AMD64, the 9.0 is better : the kernel 2.4.21 is "old", the 2.6.5 is too much young. With nVidia chipset and video card, no problem with drivers : they are available on the website of nVidia, for Linux X86_64, and they work fine (up to now; you need only the video driver in fact) : they are not "beta". This is not the case for ATI : the video driver 64 bits is not available at this moment So do choose an AMD64 laptop with nVidia chipsets ! Which does not work : PC card, wifi, card 3n1 reader. For wifi : no driver 64 bits (by Broadcom or by other people of open source; for 32 bits linux : the windows driver can be use). For PCMCIA : there is a bug in the kernels 2.4.21 and 2.6.5; the problem should be solved with kernel 2.6.8 of the next SuSE 9.2. For card 3n1 reader : in the future .... About USB 2.0 memory stick : it does not work the SuSE 9.1 (the stick : HyperDrive 256 Mo USB 2.0), no problem with SuSE 9.0. I use an ADSL modem on ethernet port : OK. DVD or CD burning : OK with K3B.. Video : OK. Sound : OK (without nVidia driver). Not yet tested : IrDA, //, serial, ieee1394, S-Video output, VGA output but all should work. Ah, about the internal modem : this is a new Conexant chip. The driver 64 bits is not avaible, only a 32 bits one on the Linuxant website. Ext3 file system capacity limitation

I am trying to set up a large Ext3 file system on a dual opteron box with Suse 9.1 x86-64 Professional. I use the yast2 - system - partitioner to do that. >From the Partitioner display, I have a 4.0 TB storage. But after formatting it as an Ext3 file system, it is shown as a 1.6TB to the df command. If I format it as a ReiserFS, df shows correctly as a 4.0TB file system. Why ext3 shows 1.6TB and not 4.0TB? Thank you. Ok, here goes. I downloaded the 1.1 client/server release for Linux and installed it. I've got an NVidia card, GeForce 4 ti4200 and I had installed the latest NVidia drivers, from NVidia. These drivers are now patched and up to date, and it's possible to run a 32bit game binary, as well as a 64bit binary, without a problem. Doom3 looked good, but first in I didn't have any sound. So, I exited the game and went googling, and I discovered that my on-board sound (Realtek ALC655, using via82xx kernel module) had had this problem for some. It's related to that Quake3, and Doom3 requiring OSS emulation, and mmap ability to the soundcard. After still some more googling around, I discovered that all I had to do, to get my soundcard working with Doom3 was to add the following in my ~/.asoundrc pcm.via82xx { type hw card 0 mmap_emulation true } After which, I was able to start playing the game. It appears my system is a bit loaded, or bloated don't know which, so I had to exit KDE and use blackbox (or some other light window manager) to play the game effectively. This mileage my vary for others, depending on their CPU/GPU. My CPU is a 3000+, and my video card good ... but the newer ones are better. But in another window manager, the game looks and feels good. Mike, I loaded SuSE 9.1 PRO on non-RAID SATA drives straight off of the DVD. No fuss, no muss. It was a beautiful thing. Ok I solved the problem. I didn't use the alsa output device for mplayer and because I'm using a SB Audigy 2 NX usb soundcard, I have to use alsa for correct sound. Alsa maps my 44100 Hz sample rate to 48000 Hz. If the oss device is used, there's no mapping and a terrible distorted sound (44100Hz at 48000). I added ao=alsa in my mplayer config Now I have got a new problem, but this has nothing to do with SuSE or AMD Thanks for the help Andy

Hi Andi, Where do you check to get that reiserfs info? Why does it read the bitmap? We also tried ext3, but the file system (2-4TB) is too large for ext3 and it won't build. I did mention about jfs in my first posting, the transfer rate between two jfs file systems is very poor. Reiserfs appears to be the only viable option, but it takes about 10 minutes to reboot. Long start up time on Reiserfs

We have recently acquired a few dual opteron boxes with a fair bit of SATA storage (2 to 4 TB per RAID using 3Ware 9500S-8 or -12 controllers). One immediate unusual "feature" we have found is the slow start up time on the ReiserFS file system at boot up. It typically takes about 3 minutes per file system regardless whether the file system is newly formed, or have a fair bit of usage, at a clean shutdown and reboot or a complete power cycle. If we then changed the file system to JFS, then this slow start up issue goes away. Another trouble however arises with JFS is that disk to disk copy can rapidly drops from 40MB/s to 2 MB/s in about 5 minutes, even with nothing else running on the system. Can anyone shed some light to these issues? The boxes are running Suse 9.1 x86-64 Professional.

error while installing SLES 8 on 4-way Opteron

Hi, All, I am trying to install SLES 8 on a 4-way Opteron platform. The installation fails at the very beginning, just after it boots, finds some devices and has to show me the installation menu. Instead, the installation displays the error message: "An error occurred during the installation". If I switch between screens, I can find another error messages, such as: "non-volatile memory driver v1.1" and "error -3 while decompressing". On a 2-way Opteron system it installs fine. ripping problem with cdparanoia

I ran into a strange problem this weekend. I was trying to rip a couple of CDs with my amd64 suse 9.1. professional system for the first time. I used grip with cdparanoia set as the ripping program. cdparanoia spends its time ripping, then leaves a file that seems to be the correct length for the songs it's ripping, but when I play the files (the wav files from cdparanoia), the first 3 or so seconds have music, then dead silence for the remainder of the rip which would be the length of the original song. To be sure, I tried some rips that I'd done previously using either cdparanoia under RH 9, or on windows with I forget what, and they play fine, so it isn't the playing - it's the ripping. I've ripped scores of cds with cdparanoia in the past, even though it might have been an older version. Anybody had success ripping with cdparanoia? If not, what are you using successfully? Any ideas why this would be a problem? Regards, Bill

booting woes

Hi, I'm having trouble booting my SuSE professional 9.0 following installation. I've tried installing using the no-ACPI and safe-mode options but neither appear to help. My PC always freezes at approximately the same point while booting (once it made it all the way to the login screen but froze there). Unfortunately, verbose mode doesn't give me many clues except that it's soon after the setfreqd procedure/command when the problem arises. Possibly, I need to look into installing some drivers at installation but I'm wondering whether I might have a problem because my hard disk is greater than 137Gb. Hello there, I installed MPlayer 1.0pre5 from source and everything seemed to work. But when I try to play mpeg videos the sound sounds like played under water and distorted. I thought that this is a MPlayer problem but i read in the MPlayer list, that this might be a gcc problem in combination with mp3lib. There are a few solutions mentioned: The first was to use libmad instead of mp3lib. I tried it with mplayer -ac mad xyz.mpg but the sound is still distorted. After that I tried to recompile MPlayer with the following additional entry in the config.mak EXTRA_INC = -fno-strict-aliasing But nothing changed. So before I have to go the hard way and recompile my gcc (what I would like to avoid), does anyone know another solution? Thanks a lot Andy

Problem compiling vmware driver

largest mem available to a 64 bit binary, and how I can reduce buffer cache usage?

Hi folks: I have an application I am running which wants to use as much memory as possible. I have a quad 848 with 32 GB ram onn it. It has been running for a while with an RSS of 15GB, and a total memory size of 19GB. This leaves well over 11 GB for the cache and the os. Sure enouch, using the atop tool, and the vmstat tool, I see cache at 15068336k, free mem at 10432k, and it is swaped out to the maximum extent possible. From what I see, it needs about another 4 GB to do the operation entirely in RAM. I m having severe difficulty believing that keeping buffer cache so high, and swapping out pages is in any way helpful to this process. I did set user limits to unlimited where possible, adjusted the kernel.sh{max,all} to enable 20 GB of shared memory. What else can I do? I would like to be able to use 3/4 of the ram of the machine for applications, and not have 4 GB of swapped pages when I have 15 GB of disk cache. I understand the need for disk cache, but paging to disk, and filling up swap space in this particular scenario makes no sense whatsoever. I see this on SuSE 9.0 2.4.21-215-smp, as well as the RHEL kernels on the machine. This is a compute node for a cluster. Thanks. Kees, It really depends what you want scenario you would like to benchmark. If you are looking at processor instruction attributes, there are benchmarks like linpack or SPEC which are a good reference for those in the scientific computing community. Others that want to look at total system performance look to TPC (Transaction Processing Council), www.tpc.org, to look at a bounded, real-world TP environment. This benchmark is far larger than you would probably consider but all the rules, documentation, procedure and audit requirements were necessary to removing the marketing hype from what is a quantitative exercise. If you look at TPC though, you can see they created a few variations to show different common workloads: TPC-C is the OLTP workload TPC-H is an ad-hoc query workload TPC-R is a Report generation workload TPC-W web based transaction workload. Remember that the folks who design these systems/processors/compilers have also had their eyes open to what benchmarks are out these and I remember in days of Digital's 64 bit Alpha chip, system cache size was would make x benchmark work best. You only have to take a look at the present Itanium 2 MP processor line with 3, 4, or 6MB L3 cache variants. Manufacturer compilers use to recognize code for standard benchmarks and inline hand optimized routines to speed their platform over another. That is why GNU is a great equalizer. Lastly, consider most people will by AMD or Intel based system, not processor. Operations that read and update utilize paths in and out of the processor that are tens, hundreds and evens thousands of times slower when doing an I/O. Some benchmarks can exploit HyperTransport's duplex advantage, while others minimize the advantages of NUMA versus non-NUMA architectures. Some specific benchmarks can look at cache hotspots in a multiprocessor environment and cache coherency issues (which limits the ability to scale in a linear fashion). These benchmarks will become much more interesting with the release of AMD and Intel multi-core chips. The only benchmarks that matters to you are your own. Aside fron that, my benchmarks between 32 and 64 bit systems have shown that I get the best results on each system using code built for those specific architectures. I have 32 bit apps that were simply dragged and dropped into the 64 bit systems with some performance improvements. But the big improvements came when we recompiled our apps using new versions of GCC that supported the 64 bit architecture of the Opterons. For our numerically intensive applications, we saw over 70% improvements over 32 bit systems running at the same clock speed. But there was another cost that affected the throughput. The 64 bit compiled apps would use up more memory, so the memory that was just adequate to support the 32 bit apps would not be enough for 64 bit apps, and the subsequent swapping would make the apps run very slowly, as expected. I think that if you can rebuild your mysql binaries from source on the 64 bit system using the latest GCC compilers, you can gain huge increases in performance as well. eyc
