ASUS K8V Deluxe Motherboard LAN problems (SuSE 9.1 + AMD64 3000+)
Hello I've spent two days wrestling, googling and asking but cannot get the onboard Gigabit LAN (3Com 3C940) to work on this board. Can anyone lend me a hand? I've had to put a cheap PCI card to get out to the world. I know that the onboard sound is a lost cause (?) but it would be sad to lose two PCI slots. I've been to syskonnect's site and tried the sk98lin module but that did not seem to do anything (apparently the driver is supposed to work with the 3Com chipset; maybe I'm way off). I would like to build a couple more of these boxes for my friends and family... TIA&Cheers
Hello,
I know that the onboard sound is a lost cause (?) but it would be sad to lose two PCI slots.
Isn't the onboard sound a realtek chip? My Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro works very well with Linux 64. The onboard sound RealTek 658 is recognized as well as the RealTek Gigabit LAN chip. And I'm very surprised that the Tekram 395U SCSI-Adapter works and the Acer Scanner 620ST is working with Gimp.
I would like to build a couple more of these boxes for my friends and family...
Maybe You should change the platform to the Gigabyte K8VT800 Pro, that is better supported by Linux than the Asus stuff. Moritz -- Geschenkt: 3 Monate GMX ProMail + 3 Ausgaben der TV Movie mit DVD ++++ Jetzt anmelden und testen http://www.gmx.net/de/go/mail ++++

I'm running the same motherboard, using both the onboard sound and networking without any problems.. (Suse 9.1 AMD64) Everything was detected during install I have attached the output of my /proc/modules for you.. see if that helps.. Feel free to email me if you need a hand.. <snip> This is what I got: more /proc/modules | grep sk = sk98lin 177124 0 - Live 0xffffffffa01e3000 YaST cannot do anything with it. How much fiddling with the BIOS did you go through? I just enabled the onboard LAN and that was it. So you had absolutely no problems during install? What BIOS is on the board? Is it really the 3Com chip or the Marvell? I'm going to power down and take a closer look at the BIOS. Cheers

I am an ass!!!!!!!!! The onboard LAN was disabled! I can't believe it! 20+ years doing this and I must have pressed ESC instead of F10 when I was thinking of saving and exiting the BIOS menu! What a dumkopf fool idiot. So sorry to have wasted bandwith on this... and thanks for attempting to rescue me from myself. Cheers

Did you try to load the included sk98lin driver by hand? modprobe sk98lin You can check in the kernel log if the driver detected the card. -Andi

Yes I did. /proc/modprobe | grep sk98 = sk98lin 177124 0 - Live 0xffffffffa01e3000 lsmod | grep sk98 = sk98lin 177124 0 Can't get YaST see it. I enabled the onboard LAN in the BIOS as well. uname -a = Linux lbox 2.6.5-7.111-default #1 Wed Oct 13 15:45:13 UTC 2004 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I've seen that the SuSE site lists this board as "partially supported". However linuxtested.com said it works as long as you get the driver elsewhere.

mine detected as an asus yukon and detected automatically. maybe try that config instead of what it is detecting as yours?
