compiling kdevelop 3.0

I've been having problems getting kdevelop 3.0 to compile under suse 9.0 amd64. The first error I got was: grep: /usr/lib/libart_lgpl_2.la: No such file or directory /usr/bin/sed: can't read /usr/lib/libart_lgpl_2.la: No such file or directory libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libart_lgpl_2.la' is not a valid libtool archive make[3]: *** [libkdevelopqextmdi.la] Error 1 This looked strange because I thought it should be looking in /usr/lib64 not /usr/lib. Is /usr/lib/libart_lgpl_2.la simply missing or should it really be looking for the 64bit version. The file libart_lgpl_2.la is present but its in /usr/lib64. No power off after shutdown

Hello List, After consulting this list I finally build my SuSE AMD64 system (Workstation), and it works really very nice. After the build I performed an install out of the box with linux raid 0 and standard packages, no parameters and all hardware worked without a glitch. All the 64bit and 32bit software I tried worked good. Really a good job SuSE! One detail I have to fix: The machine will not power off after shutdown; it only halts. Then the powerswitch doesn't react either. I have to hold it for 4 seconds to force it to power off. Maybe an APM setting somewhere? Maybe it is not possible with smp instalations? Maybe I'm in the wrong list to ask? Maybe I just have to leave my machine on :-) Does somebody know how I can do this? Thanks. DW-28E on AMD64 box

Dear listers, I am trying to install a slim DVD/CDROM drive to an AMD64 based linux box running SuSE9.0Pro. MB is AOpen MK89-L, and its bios is nforce3 150. (1) When the box is switched on, the bios seems to detect the drive as a DVD/CDROM drive correctly. (2) When I tried to boot from the side 1 of SuSE9.0 DVD, however, the kernel cannot see the DVD drive, so that in the first stage of installation, the process stopps. (3) I found out that DW-28E is recognised by kernel as cdrecorder; /dev/cdrecorder is a symbolic link to /dev/hdc. By browsing many web sites, I learnt that this DW-28E is widely usued on notebook computers, and that with 32bit OS it seems to work fine for DVD playback. I have not yet check this with a 32bit box, though. I do not know if my problem is specific to 64bit, either. My questions are: (1) Is someone of you using this with amd64? (2) Is there any quick tricks to use DW-28E as a DVD drive? Thank you for your attention. yoriaki fujimori

Happy Chrisrmas & Still trying to get the KT8 Bits working

Happy Christmas and thanks for the help so far! I'm trying to get a standard pre-built 2.6 Kernel rpm from Kraxel's directory to make all my HW on the KT8 Neo to work all at once. I'm probably being really stupid but get warnings that it cannot determine the dependencies of ataraid, pdcraid and ata_via during the rpm installation? When I try and modprobe the ata_via module it can't be found (which as far as I can see is right?) Also I have to load the 8139too by hand which again used to work under 2.4.21 during the boot up process. What am I doing wrong? OGLE on AMD64 ?

I have a new AMD 64 system: ATI RADEON 9600 XT card + MSI K8T NEO board, AMD64 3200+ cpu + a dvd player LG 4040B. I am running SUSE AMD64 9.0. When I couldn't find a prebuilt RPM, I downloaded src rpms and : a52dec-0.7.4-fr3.src.rpm libdvdcss-1.2.8-1.fr.src.rpm libmad-0.15.0b-3.fr.src.rpm all built fine and installed in 64 bit mode as x86_64. All other libraries came with SUSE AMD64 and were installed. but ogle-0.9.2-ogle1alsa.src.rpm cannot compile because it wants specific architectures, none of which is x86_64. Can this be built on the AMD64 architectcture? I can try a 32 bit installation, but I prefer to move to 64 bit only, where practical. Thanks.

Modem drivers

I am using SuSE 9.0 but it didn't pick up my modems on both the laptop and desktop. I've searched the many Linux modems sites but couldn't find drivers for the following chipsets: - Intel 82801 CA/CAM'97 Modem Controller (on a Sony VAIO PCG-V505BL) - Broadcom Corp BCM v.90 56k modem (on a Gateway, possibly a "Palmer" modem custom-made for Gateway) If anyone has had experience with either of these, or know of a driver that might work, please let me know. Tyan Tomcat S2850

I plan to set up a (rather low cost) fileserver that is able saturate a gigabit ethernet link. I have in mind a single Opteron 240 on a Tyan Tomcat S2850 (G2NR) with two disks on the (P)ATA channels. I hope someone likes to share his experience before I order it. I'm not sure if the Tomcat is perfectly suited for my demands, because the two integrated gigabit ethernet NICs are 32bit/33MHz PCI devices and the board has no PCI-X slot. The bandwidth of GbE and PCI are roughly the same. So if I use only one NIC and have no other device on the bus, then that would be sufficient (I hope). So the main question I'm asking is whether the two (P-)ATA channels are accessed via the PCI bus. If this were the case, then the NIC had to share half of the bus with the disks. Looking at the block diagram of the board, it seems that the ATA channels are connected directly to the IO-Hub and not using the PCI-bus - is this true? (A lspci -vv of a Tomcat S2850 would be nice!) Are there any other potential bottlenecks? What file transfer performance can I expect from this board? I'm aware that it isn't that easy to gain maximum throughput with GbE - I was hoping to get top file transfers speeds in the range of 50-80 MB/s, but I'm not sure if this is realistic. How much power does the Tomcat need (equipped with a 240 or 140)? It is important for me that the whole system takes less than 100 Watt idle. Are there compatibility problems or instabilities with Linux? I think that SATA isn't supported yet, but this would be no problem - I could wait for that a year or two. The most important things are the NICs and the PATA channels. Thanks, Thomas.

New siimage patches in lates 2.6.0-mm1 patch

I was just looking at the LinuxToday headlines and I see Andrew Morton has posted a mm1 patch to 2.6.0 In that patch are three new patches listed which seem to relate to the Silicon Omage SATA controller. ide-siimage-seagate.patch ide-siimage-stack-fix.patch ide-siimage-sil3114.patch My problem is I still cannot get a 2.6.X kernel to work with any install media. Still looking for suggestions on my initrd problems with 2.6.X I have not tried this latest mm1 patch yet so hopefully I will get a chance in the next few days. -- Steven A. DuChene

mplayer does not work on 9.0pro

Dear list, By chance I tried to compile MPlayer-1.0pre3 on an AMD64 based box running SuSE 9.0 (Pro, commercial one). I noticed a funny behaviour of mplayer on the desktop, that three or four small windows are opened at the top of the desktop without colours; sound seems to be fair. I picked up MPlayer-0.9 or something like that from SuSE8.2beta9 together with libdvdread etc. But, the symthom is the same. Is this a known problem? Where should I look for causes of this problem? Booting from SATA Drives - Forced Module Load on boot

Hallo, I have an Shuttle SN85G4 AMD64 with SIL3512 Sata Raid ship. One Drive is connectet (No Raid). On Sil Support Site (ww.cmd.com) i found Linux Driver for Suse 8.2 (32 bit) (64 Bit only aviable as beta for 3114 Chip). I burned this on CD and installed Suse 8.2 by pressing F3 (insert Driverdisk/floppy)on boot. Copyed sii6512.o to modules directory and added to Grub goes well. But first reboot says me, that the module is compiled for other kernel. The difficult is, the module is compiled for 2.2.4.18-GB and the installed kernel is 2.2.4.18-4GB-athlon. I have found the -f option for insmod, but how can i give this option on bootime or in Grub, so it loads the module on boot (if the option works). Looks like exactly the same config as I had. The wierd thing was that 8.2 Beta for Suse had support from Silicon Image for the Sata drives. I did experience wierd pauses when writing large files to disk. Most of these disappeared when I ran Raid (striped). I emailed Silicon Image and they pretty well ignored any request for a ETA on drivers. I'd say (IMHO) that whey are waiting for the 2.6 kernel to have support. I also had some problems under Windows XP 64 bit for AMD, where I'd get pauses on the system for up to 1 minute and then the computer continued as if nothing happened. I have to say the 3/6 months is my opionion/guestimate. I could be proven wrong (happens quite offen ;-). All I can say at the moment is I feel for you. I gave up yesterday and purchased 2 SCSI disks. (you can see all of my horrors in previous messages) It is probably 3/6 months too early for Sata(n) and linux. One of the posters, Frank did get his Sata disks running, but I have Seagate drives and he did not. There where a number of patches in Bart's siimage.c for seagates. Tyan 2885 and 2.6.0-test11-mm1 "no init found" on boot.iso

I am attempting to modify the SuSE9-AMD64 boot.iso so I can attempt to install SuSE9-X86_64 to a Tyan 2885 system with two SATA drives hung off of the Silicon Image 3114 controller. The system has 2Gb of memory (two 512Kb sticks stuck in each processor memory bank). I have the controller configured in IDE mode in the BIOS and I was able to build a 2.6 kernel (2.6.0-test11-mm1) that has the siimage driver in it that seems to recognize the drives during boot up. The SATA drives show up as hde and hdg. The CD/DVD drive hung off of the built in AMD8111 IDE controller shows up as hda. I have been unable to get this kernel placed on an altered SuSE9 boot.iso install image without causing various boot problems. I have built the kernel with all of the appropriate drivers built into the kernel image so I shouldn't require any modules. Since I did not include Minix fs support I altered the initrd file to be gzipped ext2 instead of Minix. (created a ext2 fs on a file and then tar'ed all the stuff over from the uncompressed and loopback mounted Minix initrd file). Since I have what I hope to be a 2.6 kernel that should not require any modules I removed all of the SuSE9-X86_64 2.4 kernel module files from the initrd file that was on the original boot.iso I have quite a bit of Linux experience (since 1993) and I am running other 2.6.0-test kernel on my other x386 system but this is the first Opteron system I have goofed with. During kernel bootup it does say RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) read only Freeing unused kernel memory: 168k freed Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to the kerme. Yep, you guys are 100% correct. I took a 29160 out of a server and 9.0 booted ok. Do you think they will notice the tape drive is now a book end ? ;-) I'll hook the tape up on the spare channel of another SCSI card in the server and hope that it will not interfere with the other devices. This Sony AIT SDX-400C does not like being on the same SCSI chain as any other device. When the SCSI bios loaded, either the AIT was in visible or all other devices where. I'm hoping that being on Channel B, this problem will not arise. 8.2 Beta

Andreas, Was the 8.2 Beta a full 64 bit OS? I've just had a thought that if it was, I probably can do 80% of my work on 8.2, so long as g++ gcc produce 64 bit code. I am a little gun shy about getting an Adaptec 29320 or 39320 lest it does not work. If you have any way of finding out, I'd be very appreciative. Regards Alan Have a Merry XMAS

Sounds good. Am I right in assumming you are not running Suse 9.0 ? The problem with SATA for me started when I installed 9.0. Hi there, Thanks for that, I have a look in a few minutes in the BIOS. Silicon image did release drivers for 8.0/8.2beta of Suse but not 9.0. I have tried installing the 2.6.0 Linux kernel, but get a hang on boot. I'm not sure what SLSE8 is. Another poster, Frank, did manage to get SATA running on a 2885, but he was running different SATA drives from me (I have Seagate). In the 2.6 kernel, there is work happening, but not soon enough for me. I'm going to put everything on SCSI (except /boot which will need to be on a IDE disk). Andreas Jaeger spent a fair bit of time with me trying to get the Silicon Image Sata(n) controller to work, but in the end, he recommended using IDE :-( which I aggreed with after waisting a week on it. Hi Jyh-Shyong Ho, Your a genius ! you picked it in 1. After I updated the BIOS, it must have lost all the settings :-( A question for the mailing list. If on the Tyan 2885, you have "Serial ATA Option ROM" is set to [RAID], but you dont create a RAID set, could this explain some of the performance problems I faced. Because I treated each disk as a separate volume, both Linux 8.2 Beta and WIndows XP 64 bit both had horrible delays in writing to the disk. Should have the BIOS be set to IDE in this case ? More woes with Sata(n) on Tyan K2885 motherboard

It just gets worse and worse. Unless I'm going crazy, at some point during boot, when the Silicon Image Bios loads for the Tyan K2885, it used to display a message for which keystrokes/function keys to press to configure the raid settings etc etc. Now, this does not display and I've tried every combination I can think off. Can anyone remember the keys? All I did was use the Tyan update bios listed elsewhere on this mailing list. Since then the message has gone. I even down graded the BIOS back to the release version and the message is still absent. What is worse is now my installation of Windows 64 bit edition does not boot. When the Sil bios loads, it lists the 2 drives, but does not seem to then list the logical drives (I used striped RAID across the 2 seagate 80gig drives) Arrrgggghhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The weird thing is that when grub stage 2 starts, at that point, menu.lst has been read from /boot/grub, and once I select my 2.6 kernel, there is plenty of disk activity as though a boot is in progress, its just the screen goes blank. Tried pinging the computer from another box, but it is obvious the computer has not booted to a login stage. Anyway, time to have a XMAS beer, and attack this a bit later on. Thanks everyone for your help with my attempts to get the SATA drives working. Got the kernel all compiled, all modules built and installed, added an entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst, rebooted and the computer half booted then hung. Oh well, this was the last roll of the dice to get sata(n) drives working. Buying SCSI today. I'll wait until SUSE release the 2.6 kernel. A while back, someone said there was a version of the memtest program that'd been ported to AMD64... I don't suppose anyone has a link to this do they? So I can FINALLY see if it's linux itself that's having trouble, or the motherboard, with this RAM? Thanks.

Also I haven't tried putting in 2 more Dimms because of cost and I hear that it wouldn't make much of a difference if at all and it might be slower even. Anyone else out there running this config. I've seen some people getting like over 4.0G per second between two processors but with high end and expensive opterons on the MSI and HDAMB type boards. Also I just saw a review of the quads that get 9G per second total its not 16G but still 9Gig isn't too shabby! I used a common windows benchmark program called Sisoft Sandra: Memory Bandwidth which also has other systems data listed for comparison (it uses a proprietary bandwidth algo because, I used it because alot of hardware review sites list it). I also ran Byte Unix Benchmark and it scored a 156 which is about an xp 1700 score wise. Thanks for the info on the bios that supports pc3200. Although it definitely seems faster than anything I've used before, this is my first dual processor box and I'm just thrilled at the Opterons although now I'd be tempted to have just gotten the Athlon 64 3200+ or the clawhammer 3000+ those systems fly I hear but Suse runs great I was suprised how easy it was after I installed the new BIOS, *huge* thanks to Andreas Jaeger and Suse for that 9.0 64bit edition now I guess I'll try to instal 2.6.0 again to see if the nic will work I don't really need 2.6.0 but it was so easy to install it from rpm I had to try it, oh maybe thats why I didn't compile it specifically for my hardware. >From: Mark Horton <mark(a)nostromo.net> >I was curious about your memory bandwidth tests. Can anyone say if this BIOS would resolve the problem I'm having? (although, it's "more than 2 gig" in my case) Or perhaps would the new 2.6.0 be more forgiving of whatever's causing it? We're VERY wary of trying to flash the bios. We tried it last week with the 1.01 first release BIOS and ended up with a dead motherboard.

SATA on MSI KT8 Neo Mobo

Does anyone have any experience of getting SATA drives to work on a MSI KT8 Mobo? I've just finished installing Suse9.0 Pro AMD64 onto a PATA drive and all went well other than I would like to use a 2x SATA 160 Segate as a raid on either the VIA8237 or the Promise 20378 that are on this board. Only problem is that nothing from either of the SATA chipsets shows up during the boot. I've been looking for the location of the 2.6 kernel on the DVDs but (probably because I'm being stupid) am unable to find it, Any help much appreciated! Best regards and thanks Gareth Rees

Hi, I just installed SuSE 9.0 on a dual Opteron file server. It has a 4 TB SATA raid attached by Fibre through a Qlogic 2312 HBA. I had issues with the hardware RAID set up (not related to SuSE), originally intending to have a single 3.5TB device (RAID5), but ended up with 2 logical raid devices, which appear to SuSE as /dev/sda (2TB) and /dev/sdb (1.5TB). It takes 20 hours for the RAID to build so I don't want to change that now. So, in order to combine the space (and allow for future expansion) I set up LVM. I created a volume group that includes both physical volumes, then attempt to create logical volumes. Actually, when creating the volume group there is already a warning that the logical volume size is limited to 2 TB. I have read conflicting information about this. In some places, it says that this is due to the maximum block device size in 2.4 kernels is 2TB, in some places, I read that there is a 2TB limit imposed by 32 bit hardware (but hey, this is 64 bit hardware!). Isn't LVM supposed to get around block device limits? Also, I am using JFS for the file system, so that should not be limiting. When creating the volume group I used 256 MB physical extents (the default is 32) , so that should allow larger logical volumes. So, I create 2 logical volumes, lvol1 (2TB) and lvol2 (1.5TB), and create a JFS file system on each. In both cases, mkfs.jfs reports the file system created sucessfully. Now, I can mount lvol1, but when I try to mount lvol2, it says "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock, or too many mounted filesystems" Well, the mount parameters are the same for both logical volumes (different mount points), and they are both freshly created filesystems, so the only possibility seems is that there are too many mounted filesystems. But, the only other file system that is mounted is the IDE boot disk, which contains the OS, /home, etc. all in a single partition, plus /dev/shm. Is there a kernel parameter I can tweak to allow me to mount more drive space? 2TB is nothing any more (haha). Any help will be apreciated. John Craig

Adaptec 29320 & 39320 Support

Hi, Looking on Suse's hardware support list, the 29320 & 39320 scsi controllers are not listed. The 29160 is but the 39160 is listed as problematic. Has anyone had experience with these? On adaptec's web site, there appears to be source code for non-HostRAID. The file is aic79xx-2.0.2-source.tar.gz (as well as aic79xx-1.1.0-source.tar.gz). I have a tyan K2885 motherboard which has SATA, but given support for SATA in an offical release is who knows when, I do not want to get caught again with any other non supported devices. Alan

Strange system process takeover

Hello, I have a Suse Linux 9.0 64 bit Linux installation running on an AMD Athlon 64 3200 processor. I find when I first start a cpu intensive run of one of our software tools, it starts off with over 90 percent of the cpu. However after a few minutes its fraction of the CPU drains away to under 20%. The cpu meter in the task bar shows the user cpu time in blue drain away as the system cpu time in red takes over (see attached jpg image). The GUI reponsiveness of other programs is severly degraded as the system cpu takes over. I have tried 2 software tools now from two separate companies, and both show the same problem. Both are compiled to run on on Linux using a 32 bit Intel cpus. Both tools do relatively small amounts of disk io, and both fit within the available RAM. I also tried compiling this program for the Athlon 64 and running it. int main () { while (1); } This does not show the same problem, and retains over 90% of the cpu continuously. Has anyone else seen anything like this? KPM doesnt show where the extra cpu time is going. I have no idea what to try next. Jeremy.

Megaraid Elite 1600 on a dual Opteron

Hello List, Recently I mailed about some problems installing SuSE 9.0 AMD-64 on a opteron system, i debugged a bit further and came to some things i couldn't understand. I'm using a raid-1 on 2x36G disks with the elite megaraid-1600, the install goes fine, but booting with the smp kernel was a nogo. I could boot with the failsafe option, so i tried to look for the append option that caused the system to boot. It was the append = 'maxcpus=0', which disables smp. It looks like I can't boot with SMP enabled while using the Megaraid. Off course i didnt know for sure if it was the megaraid, so I took out the card and used the onboard controller. this went fine, I could install and boot the system without any problems so I blamed the megaraid drivers ;) Is there any known problem with the Megaraid drivers and amd-64 SMP? or should I forget to use this card in an opteron system? I could try the card in 2 or 3 other opteron systems i have currently here, but i'm afraid it would give the same results. -kees

Eclipse error

Hello, I'm getting the error below when I try to start Eclipse 3.0. Eclipse is a java app that uses native libraries such as GTK for window rendering. The file its looking for is definitely there, so I'm guessing this error is caused because it cant load the 64bit library. Is there a way to tell this particular app to use the 32bit GTK libs? This is on suse 9.0 AMD. At last look (just checked again now), Tyan only had 8.2 Beta drives for Suse. These will not (for me) work with 9.0. What page are you looking at. Should also note that in a support email to me, Suse does not 'support' dual processor kernel. But Andreas Jaeger of Suse (on this mailing list), has built a SMP kernal and it works a treat. I should add I do not work for AMD / SUSE / TYAN. The best option for the K2885 is put in cheap IDE disks and when SATA drivers are ready, maybe upgrade then. In theory it would be possible to change the configuration of the memory controller early in bootup to more conservative values, but that is getting very hardware specific and will depend a lot on the board (= requires knowledge that the kernel doesn't have). You can try if a BIOS update helps. A safe route is to stick only to DIMMs that are approved by the vendor. lm-sensors fix for Tyan K8W

I sent to a message to the lm_sensors folks but in the meantime this should help anyone who is having trouble getting lm_sensors to work on the Tyan K8W. Emil -------------------------------------------------------------------------- lm_sensors was not working on this motherboard. It uses an AMD8111 chipset which provides both smbus 1.0 and 2.0 controllers. The 2.0 controller module (i2c-amd8111) would load but the 1.0 controller which is compatible with the i2c-amd756 controller would not. According to the Tyan documents the sensor chip is an ADT7463 connected to the 1.0 controller. After poking around through the AMD docs I found the problem. The PCI device ID was not present in the pci_device_id structure. I did change the boot procedure manually by editing the dependend scripts how hwscan, xdm and new boot.idedma, by me named as idedma. Here I did insert the new sysconfig variable. Installation problems with Suse 9.0 64 bit

Hi Guys, I have a Biostar ideq 200p computer containing an Athlon 64 3200+ CPU, Nvidia Nforce3 chipset and a Nvidia Geforce 4 440 mx graphics card. Booting from the DVD and selecting "Installation" causes the machine to hang after the message "starting hardware detection" Picking "Safe Settings" has the same result Using text mode instead causes it to lock up at "searching for Adding a floppy disk gets past this problem, and I can choose language etc. 5 OKs later the machine again locks up, this time saying starting yast... I have tried turning off all the on-board peripherals appart from the usb controller that I need for my mouse. It hasn't made any difference. I also tried the switch hdc=cdrom suggested in the manual, since my CDROM is a master on the second ide interface, and there is only 1 hard disk on the primary ide channel. I got the nforce rpm for SuSE 9.0 from the nvidia website and ran it, but I can't tell if anything actually happened. There was no success message and I don't notice anything different. Kind of frustrating .. I know sometimes the philosophy in Linux is that if you don't get an error message that everything must have gone ok, but I find in practice it's more like a gamble. I rebooted the machine and still didn't notice anything different, no network card detected. Mark

SuSE 9.0 AMD64 - Hardware detection issues with Shuttle SN85G4?

While working through the SuSE 9.0 AMD64 installation on my Shuttle SN85G4, I noticed the following oddities: No network card was detected 3D Acceleration was unavailable TV Card was not detected Once SuSE was fully installed, I went into YAST2 network devices. Still no network device detected. On the graphics side, I have an ATI AIW 9600, so 3D acceleration and "TV Card" I would think would both be found. I was going to see what the Linux drivers do on NVIDIA's website for the nforce chipset, but since the network card wasn't detected I couldn't go .. ;) I'll use another machine to burn a CD with those drivers and see what happens. Newbie questions about SuSE for AMD64 ..

Is there a document that explains the various nuances of how software is (or should be) optimized for AMD64 when using SuSE? For example .. I'm now installing SuSE for AMD64 on my machine, but have all the software packages themselves been compiled for AMD64, or are they still 32bit? And I know compiled isn't necessarily optimized, so are any of the software packages further optimized for AMD64? And finally, what about drivers? In theory, to have a more optimized system, would you need a full set of 64bit optimized hardware drivers? I'm the first one in our office to buy a 64bit machine, so I have no experience with anything but 32bit systems. (Well, Atari Jaguar .. but .. ;) ) Mark

I looked last night on Shuttle's website and I did not see a more recent BIOS (in fact, only one update since first release) but I will look harder today. A couple more questions .. 1.) Now that I have SuSE installing with idle=poll as a boot option, will that carry over to some persistent system setting, or is that only going to be in effect for the installation session? If it will change something permanently, is there a way for me to "fix" my system once a BIOS update is available? 2.) I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure what idle=poll means. I'm curious, what is actually broken in the BIOS to make this necessary? And finally, thanks for the help. I've tried lots of distributions and had previously settled on Red Hat. I had been buying the RHN support until I got the notice it was being cancelled. It looks like I'll be moving our office over to SuSE! Mark

SuSE 9.0 Pro + Tyan S2885 + Nvidia FX5200 + Nvidia 1.0.4499 drivers problems

Hi, I was reading the SuSE-AMD64 archives for November and noticed that at least one person reported success getting an Nvidia GeForce card to work with the Tyan S2885 board and Nvidia's drivers under Suse 9.0. I've been having some trouble with a GeForce FX5200 on the same board with Suse 9.0 Pro and Nvidia's 1.0.4499 drivers, and I was wondering if perhaps there was some step I'd missed in the configuration. I'd would really appreciate it if anyone could offer some insight into the problem. To summarize the steps I took: (1) Installed Suse 9.0 Professional. (2) Downloaded Andreas Jager's -139 (tried -143 as well) kernel source. (3) Recompiled the -139 kernel with agpgart as a module rather than built-in. (4) Dowloaded the Nvidia x86_64 1.0.4499 kernel and GL tarballs. (5) Unpacked the kernel and GL tarballs, and patched the kernel with the Suse Nvidia patch (-mno-red-zone, etc.) (6) Compiled/installed Nvidia kernel module(s), then GL module(s) (7) Edited XF86Config file to load "nvidia" driver rather than "nv", (same as "switch2nvidia") and commented out DRI bits. With the various settings of "NvAGP" I get: NvAGP Results ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0 1 GL app -> slow (PCI), but still ~ 2500 fps with glxgears >1 GL app -> very slow, but varying. Usually seems to freeze up within a couple of seconds, then come out of the freeze after a while. After coming out of the freeze, the GL apps run slowly, and periodically slow down to almost a standstill for a second or two. 1 X fails to load, garbage on the screen, have to reboot. 2 pretty much the same as with "NvAGP" "0" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I can provide relevant sections of the XFree86.0.log and XF86Config files if they would be helpful. I don't see any obvious problems in the log file, unfortunately. Supposedly, AGP 8X gets set, Direct Rendering is enabled, and the graphics mode is successfully initialized, even with "NvAGP" "1". This is obviously not borne out by what's on the screen. Again, any suggestions as to the nature of the problem would be appreciated. Hello all, I got my boxed set of SUSE LINUX 9.0 for AMD64 this last week and was really excited to get it installed. I've now tried the standard installation and installation with ACPI disabled, and in both cases SuSE appears to hang at hardware detection! I have a Shuttle SN85G4 (http://www.shuttle.com/hq/product/barebone/specs_b.asp?B_id=25) with an ATI Radeon AIW 9600 Pro. Any ideas? Thanks! Mark

SLES 8 Kernel - NUMA vs SMP

Greetings: SLES 8 for AMD64 2.4.21-143 Two Celestica A8440 Quartet servers (Four 844 Opterons, 8GB RAM) I am running Oracle 9.2.0.x and attempting to run a very large materialized view refresh. (high disk/memory i/o and cpu intensive) The SMP Kernel seems to be infinitely more stable than the NUMA under high load. Its been my experience that the NUMA kernel will crash about once a day on my development server. The SMP Kernel runs rock solid. The NUMA Kernel seems to be faster under most conditions. When is the NUMA Kernel going to be ready for prime time? (Or do I have to wait for a UnitedLinux 2.6.x kernel?) Thanks Joe Bedard

Ok, Just reinstalled everything. Started the kernel config program, set on SMP support, it then says make symblinks dep I assume this is from /usr/src/linux. I have done that without any errors. Other note I have on the web talk about running make bzImage make modules make modules_install then some cp commands. Is this right? I really don't want to have to reinstall again. With all the hassles, I installed over 20 times in the space of a week. Regards Alan

Hi Andreas, There could be a number of things wrong. Because of the Silicon Image RAID problem, I had to install the 8.2 Beta, then Upgrade to 9.0. At the moment, I am running on an old SCSI controller and have the power turned off on the SATA drives. I was just about to do a clean install from the DVD onto the SCSI disk to see what happens. I cannot do this on the SATA as the 8.2 drivers for the RAID are not recognised by 9.0. 9.0 Install Problems

Hi, Received my 9.0 release copy last friday. This is a bit of a diary for others, and a few questions. 2 AMD Opteron 242 Processors Tyan Thunder K8W S2885 motherboard 4 1GB Corsair PC2700 RAMM ECC REGISTERED (2 sticks per processor) 2 Segate 80GB SATA HDD 7200rpm. My first problem was 9.0 would not recognise the Silicon Image RAID controller. Eventually got around this by always booting from the 8.2 Beta CD, with the 8.2 RAID controller driver in the floppy. Messy, but until sil release 9.0 drivers, that will have to do. Secondly, running the Silicon Image RAID with no raid set seems to cause Linux and Windows XP 64 Bit to stall for to 2 minutes at a time. Now Suse 9.0 does not come out of the BOX with SMP. I installed the SMP rpm, eventually found the KDE tool to config the kernel and turn on SMP. SuSE 9.0 Professional install

Hello list, I recently purchased SuSE Professional 9.0 the DVD version. Unfortunatly I have some Opteron servers without a DVD drive so I copied the contents of the dvd to my laptop, set up an ftp server and monday i'm going to try to install it over the network. But I still need a bootable CD, is it possible to use the boot.iso from ftp.suse.com or do I need a seperate bootcd for the AMD64 version, and if so, how do I make it / where to download it? [SUSE 9.0] Kernel panic when loading dpt_i2o driver

Till this day I'm still unable to get any AMD/64 kernel to load the dpt_i2o RAID driver. Looking at the messages, I see that it recognized the adaptor, it started listing the SCSI devices I have, then came a kernel panic. It happened on the 2.4.21-143 on the 8.2 server and also on the new 9.0 release. Before I start troubleshooting, I just wanted to ask if anyone have gotten the driver working? Here's what I'm running on my system: Tyan S2882UGNR motherboard w/Adaptec 79xx SCSI Adaptec 2015S zero channel RAID adaptor None of the current AMD/64 distros would recognize the SCSI device during install, while any i586 distros runs fine. Thanks for all input on compatible hardware for a SuSE 9.0 AMD64 out-of-the-box workstation instalation. I now purchased a Tyan Tiger K8W (s2875) with 2 x Opteron 244, 2 x 1GB Kingston reg. memory and an ASUS Geforce FX 5900 graphics card, which should work fine. (with the Nvidia binary for 3D) The only thing left is my SCSI controller to connect 2 x Maxtor 10K-IV U320. I cannot find much information about compatibility besides that the adaptec controlers "should probably work". So I'm planning the Adaptec 19160 or the 29160N. Does anybody have experience that either or both of these controlers work or not with this SuSE version? (Or maybe advise another controler) Thanks again. Emile van Mierlo
