SATA on MSI KT8 Neo Mobo
Does anyone have any experience of getting SATA drives to work on a MSI KT8 Mobo? I've just finished installing Suse9.0 Pro AMD64 onto a PATA drive and all went well other than I would like to use a 2x SATA 160 Segate as a raid on either the VIA8237 or the Promise 20378 that are on this board. Only problem is that nothing from either of the SATA chipsets shows up during the boot. I've been looking for the location of the 2.6 kernel on the DVDs but (probably because I'm being stupid) am unable to find it, Any help much appreciated! Best regards and thanks Gareth Rees

They should be somewhere in Kraxel's ftp-dir. Kraxel, what is the correct path? Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

That was the info I have been waiting for.... I have a MSI K8T myself, but have not been able to find a suitable module for the VT8237. As far as I am informed (I asked for it on this list some time ago) there is no proper support yet for both of the SATA chips... Maybe A. Jäger can correct me (And I hope he does :-), maybe the named Kraxel has written a module, I am eagerly waiting for it...) To Gareth: Btw: Do yourself a favour and update your BIOS to V 1.10 and use the VIA-Controller for SATA. I have had lots of problems with the Promise (even with the new BIOS)... Bye Andy

A. Jäger? I don't know anybody on this list by that name - but if you mean me, then please spell me correctly ;-).

I don't know the status of the VIA8237 support. Kraxel (that's Gerd Knorr's nick-name) has RPMs of current 2.6 kernels in his directory, so if you like to play with 2.6, you can use his RPMs, instead of compiling the kernel yourself, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Ooops, beg your pardon :-) (Seems that I lost my Un*x/TeX writing style, six years ago that would never have happened ;-) )

Very interesting information, thanks. I sure will do so as soon as I find time for it (I need to install another HDD to get this thing running, unfortunately this could take some time ;-) ). Of course I will post any interesting results to this list. Thanks Andy

Feel free to do so - even if it works fine ;-) Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I recompiled the Suse kernel with /proc/config.gz and added the ata_via module. It works fine & fast whitout any error messages(so far). It is also very fast. Tobias Wittlin -- tmmw@fenixnet.ch http://www.fenixnet.ch/
Thanks, I'm just about to rebuild the kernel to add the ide-cd module so that my dvd writer will work - what settings are important for the AMD when I configure the kernel? Use the ones you have already - check /proc/config.gz and use that as basis (zcat /proc/config.gz > .config;make oldconfig), Andreas
Best regards
