[yast-devel] Overcommit - automatic checks via Git hooks

Hi, I found a quite interesting tool called Overcommit [1]. It provides an easy way for setting up Git commit hooks and provides some basic checking plugins. The nice feature of the Git commit hooks is that you can run some checks automatically and early in the development. For example with the commit hooks you can run Rubocop check automatically whenever a commit is created. And if the check fails the commit is not created. I can see "make Rubocop happy" commits quite often (happens to me as well), with Overcommit you can easily avoid that. I have tried several Overcommit checks: - Rubocop - runs Rubocop at "commit" - Rspec - runs the tests before "push" - Branch blacklist - can forbid direct commits to configured branches, e.g. "master" (forces using pull requests, avoids commits to master my mistake) - Commit message spellcheck - warns when there is a possible typo Check my blog post [2] for the details, esp. watch the recorded screencast where I wanted to show some mistakes which it can catch. Hi all, some time ago we discussed where and how we should share "Tips&Tricks" for YaST users and developers. IIRC there was no clear conclusion so I decided to start a wiki [1] to collect all our tricks we know or use. For now it's just a place for dumping your ideas, links, short howtos, etc... When we collect enough data we can probably split it to several categories or move it somewhere else. We just need the data first. I have added there some my tricks from my personal "knowledgebase" file. [yast-devel] Protected branches at GitHub?

Hi, I have noticed a quite interesting GitHub feature which allows to protect the specified branches. A short summary from [1]: A protected branch: - Can't be force pushed - Can't be deleted - Can't have changes merged into it until required status checks pass - Can't have changes merged into it until required reviews are approved - Can't be edited or have files uploaded to it from the web See [1] and [2] for more details. AFAIK some developers use forks mainly because they are afraid of messing the original repositories. With protected branches that should not happen. Additionally it would strictly enforce PR reviews (we do that already so I see no problem with that). IMHO a nice feature, I'm just not sure which branches we could protect. Obviously the old maintenance branches, I'm not sure about the "master" branch, maybe it would be too strict. What do you think about it? Should we use this GitHub feature? We could use the agile approach, try it in a few selected repos and see how it works... Comments? [yast-devel] snapper 0.3.3 fails to accept group in ALLOW_GROUPS

When I try to add a group to ALLOW_GROUPS in a snapper config file I get a "invalid group" error. The issue was tracked down to getgrnam_r(). In snapper-0.3.3/snapper/AppUtil.cc get_group_gid() fails to find GID when bufsize is too small. I have a lot of users in a group in /etc/group. getgrnam_r() fails to return with success. Increasing bufsize from 1024 to 2000 worked. Removing some of the users from the group also helps. Hi all, During the review meeting we found an interesting problem with referencing the code located in another GitHub repositories. I wanted to link the list of remote URL schemes defined in libzypp therefore I added this link to the code: https://github.com/openSUSE/libzypp/blob/master/zypp/Url.cc#L464 However, the disadvantage is that after adding or removing some code the line number won't match any more. Another approach is to link to a specific commit: https://github.com/openSUSE/libzypp/blob/6b22871a0aab134538edcb6e3d03213308… The advantage is that the line won't move as we point to a fixed point in the history. Obviously the disadvantage is that if libzypp adds a new schema you will not see it there. So both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Unfortunately neither of them handles code changes well. The question is which way we should prefer? Point to a moving "master" or pin to a specific commit which might get obsolete? [yast-devel] Snapper development projects now unified

We used to have multiple development projects for snapper, some for SUSE distros and some for Debian/Ubuntu. We now unified that; the new one is now filesystems:snapper/snapper in OBS https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/filesystems:snapper/snapper We still have YaST:Head/snapper in OBS Devel:YaST:Head/snapper in IBS but those are now (both!) just package links to filesystems:snapper/snapper in OBS. We are using the external Jenkins ci.opensuse.org to automatically check the snapper GitHub repo master branch and auto-submit packages from there if the build went okay to OBS filesystems:snapper/snapper, which now (due to the package links) means that they also go to OBS YaST:Head/snapper and IBS Devel:YaST:Head/snapper. We had considered to simply remove at least the external YaST:Head/snapper, but there is at least one dependent package (used by Travis), and there might be users using that repo to get the latest snapper. With those links, we won't break anything for them. [yast-devel] Branching, Leap, SP2...

As discussed in the call, I want to release this fix for bug#954143 and bug#1002417. It's all about correct handling of rpm files with sw_single in KDE. XFCE is not affected and I assume GNOME neither. It's relatively important for Leap 42.2, which is in beta phase so moderately open to changes. On the other hand, is not that relevant for SP2 which is in RC phase, meaning that only really critical stuff should get in. In our SLE-12-SP2 branch we have yast2-packager 3.1.117 In the master branch we already have yast2-packager 3.1.118 (btw, when will we jump to 3.2.x?) In the past we used to have a merge_after_SP2_release branch that we used to accumulate fixes that we wanted to release as maintenance update the same day of the release. Where should my fix go and how should it be versioned? I can create the merge_after_SP2_release branch and submit stuff from there to Leap 42.2. But there is a problem. In order to submit the stuff I have to put a version number to it. Assuming it would be 3.1.117.1. What happens if we need to fix a critical issue in the SLE-12-SP2 branch? We have no version number to do that (317.X would already be taken for the merge_after_SP2_release branch and 318 is already in master). My suggestion, start using 3.2.X for master. We can correct the already released packages not using that versioning schema. They shouldn't be many. So the solution would look like this(for the yast2-packager example) SLE-12-SP2 (SP2 in OBS) -> 3.1.118, 3.1.119... master (TW in OBS) -> 3.2.1, 3.2.2... merge_after_release (Leap and SP2:Update) -> 3.1.117.1, 3.1.117.2... Changes introduced in SLE-12-SP2 should also be merged in merge_after_release (producing a new number there) and the final merge after release should bump the number to follow the SLE-12-SP2 series. What do you think?
