Is there something that can be installed or removed to bring up font sizes to match the rest of the DE and y2cc in KDE3 and TDE without loading the installation with QT5 and/or KF5, or even with QT5 and/or KF5? Hi, When Christopher was in Prague, a few of us had a brainstorming about the need of having devel-documentation placed directly in a Yast/libstorage/linuxrc repository. There are no doubts that it's one of the most important parts of projects hosted at GitHub. All their howtos mention "create README[.md]" as the very first step. In fact, we'll have new hires in the team and in such situations, good documentation is one of the most important parts. Good documentation goes from very high level to lower and lower level. We have already summarized that in Yast Team Challenges, but the summary doesn't belong to this document as it's too detailed. That's why I'm putting it here as a WIP item and deleting it from that document: --- cut --- The README should at least describe the steps needed for maintenance (for a person without expert knowledge in the area) including: * What is the project good for - what does it actually do (and how), what it cannot do (unsupported scenarios), limitations * Links to the documentation, high level and low level descriptions (e.g. RFC, wikipedia articles, man pages, project documentation, openSUSE wiki), terminology * How to fetch the source code (if something outside Git is needed it should be mentioned) * What prerequisites are needed to build the sources (external libraries, gems, scripts, …) * How to build the sources (make/rake commands…) * How to setup a testing environment (e.g. iSCSI target for iSCSI client) * How to run the code to test a change (esp. needed for non trivial projects like linuxrc) * How to run automated tests * How to build a package for submission * How to submit the package (if it needs some manual steps) * Troubleshooting (how to solve typical problems) The README should be reasonably short, if some section is too long it should be moved to a separate document (or to GitHub wiki) and linked. --- cut --- The project consists of - Taking a decision where to go - How to get there - Implementing this important documentation Those two who, according to my knowledge, were working on this were Ladislav and Christopher, but there were not the only ones and a pilot project for READMEs has been done a few months ago by Martin. It's still not finished, but moving forward. [yast-devel] installer can't find existing BIOS partitions

Athlon XP (32bit) I just tried twice with TW 20160126 to initialize installation. At suggested partitioning screen: No automatic proposal possible. Specify mount points manually in the 'Partitioner' dialog. YaST claims no partitions on sda, an "unused" device. On vtty2, results from fdisk (30 partitions on 160G HD[1]) and mount (success with two ext3 filesystems tried) are totally as expected. lsmod | grep ata shows ata_generic, pata_via and libata. Is this a known problem? Any way to restart YaST without reboot? This system is taking about 8 minutes to boot to the initial license screen. The installed 11.2, 11.4, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 13.1, 13.2, TW and Fedoras on it are/were all behaving normally when last tried. Dmesg inexplicably lists lots of floppy I/O errors and mentions of device-mapper and raid6, plus one each raid6, raid5, raid4, raid10. Also listed are all of sda1-sda30. Got it! I managed to convert my module to Ruby using y2r. Here’s what I did: 1) install openSUSE 13.1 from scratch (don’t forget to add C/C++ development tools) 2) install all updates and reboot (important! there’s a newer yast2-core in the “oss” repo.) 3) install some needed packages: # zypper in ruby-devel libxml2-devel libxslt-devel unsquashfs 4) extract y2r-master.zip (from https://github/yast/y2r) and run (as root): # gem install y2r (beware that it needs to download some sources from the internet) 5) extract the base installation media root image: # unsquashfs <openSUSE 13.1 DVD mount point>/boot/x86_64/root This will create a “squashfs-root” directory. It contains all possible YaST modules that may be referenced in the code. 6) run y2r: # y2r2.0 -M squashfs-root/usr/share/YaST/modules <your YCP module> And the magic happens. Hello all, I finally had time to try converting my YCP module again. As mentioned earlier, I had to upgrade my yast2-core to something after 2.24.x. I tried upgrading just this package on openSUSE 12.3 (using the package from 13.1), but apparently it’d break a LOT of stuff. I decided to try upgrading the whole system to 13.1, recompiled y2r… and now it fails further while trying to load LibStorage.so. I tried feeding it the LibStorage.so from the installation image via LD_PRELOAD, but got an “undefined symbol: PL_thr_key” error. Since the installation image used Perl 5.16.2 and I am now on Perl 5.18, I downgraded Perl to 5.16 with the same results. I saw in another forum that this missing symbol indicates that this .so module was compiled in a pthread-enabled Perl interpreter, and the one supplied with the system is not, which I find odd. Hi, I happily announce that today was merged two new features to yast2.rpm. The first one is Execute class. It is basically wrapper around Cheetah library with all its features[1]. What wrapper did is basically 1) set yast logger 2) in on_target varient operate on chroot specified by destdir option ( can change in future to parse real chroot specified in WFM call ) 3) open report popup if command failed for implementation see [2] and for example usage see [3]. The second one is TargetFile which is mainly useful with new CFA gem. After getting some bug reports about usability of the "create user" screen during installation we have decided to do something about it... but it's not so easy. The current status ================== Here you can see the current screen. http://paste.opensuse.org/29576621 There is quite some functionality hidden there: A) You can select the password encryption method (clicking on "Change...") B) You can select one of only one of these options: B.1) Create a user (Obvious) B.2) Skip user creation (Leaving the form blank and clicking "Next", a confirmation popup will be displayed "This only makes sense in environments with an authentication service. Are you sure?") B.3) Import users from a previous installation. (Clicking on "Change..." and then checking the corresponding checkbox -only visible if users are detected- under the section "authentication method") B.3 is so well hidden that I wouldn't be surprised if nobody uses it or if the feature is full of bugs. Last but not least, the dialog exposes a feature that is not there. The summary suggest that you can change the authentication method, but the only supported option is "local /etc/password". The option is there only to display B.3 (tricky!!). My proposal =========== First of all, I'd move (A) to the final installation summary screen, where we already have things like installing the bootloader on MBR or disabling the firewall, configuring hardware and so on. It's one of those advanced settings that most users will not touch. The problem is that the last screenshot looks too crowded (maybe too much for same verbose languages). But I not sure if I like the alternatives we discussed in irc: - Tabs are discouraged (if not forbidden) in the installer - Displaying a pop-up and/or an additional previous step for importing users if they are detected can be tricky when going backwards and doesn't provide such a good overview about the 3 options. I need to hear (read) more opinions... and I want to fix it this week. Hi Yasters, There's a new feature in the feature tracking tool that requests Yast to log in the same format as dmesg and journalctl. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Business Case: Easier to analyse logs in bug reports. Description: YaST should log the time in its log-file like 'dmesg' and 'journalctl --output short-monotonic' so that times in the various logs can be compared and events can be synchronized. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I don't want to spoil your mind by the feature itself as there is already some discussion happening. What I actually want is you to think a bit deeper about this request from your POV. [yast-devel] Drop *-devel-doc YaST subpackages?

Hi all, currently we generate the code documentation using "yardoc" during RPM package build. To save some space in the installed system I have moved the generated documentation to *-devel-doc subpackages in some modules. (In some cases the generated doc was about 2x-3x bigger than the actual code.) But maybe we could go one step further.... What do you think about dropping them completely? Here are some my thoughts: - Does anybody actually use them? IIRC I have never used any devel-doc package, if I need a documentation for a function I usually check the source code or grep the YaST code for example usages. - Do the devel-doc packages still make sense? With YCP the only way was to generate the doc locally, with Ruby and GitHub repositories the generated documentation can be accessed online at RubyDoc.info without need for installing any package. See [1]. - When I want to point someone to a function then I usually post a link to the GitHub sources or to a RubyDoc.info rendered doc (like [2]). - If you really need a local documentation you can always run yardoc manually (via `make doc`/`rake yard`). - Some hand written documentation/screenshots are obsolete anyway, I guess you are not much interested how YaST looked ~15 years ago... :-) [2] IMHO these screenshots and the documentation should be moved to the GitHub wiki. Hi all, I just want to point out something that has surprised me and it could be useful to newcomers. While debugging a problem with yast2-kdump in SLE 11 SP4, I noticed that it was fixed in SLE 12[1]. According to 'git blame', the bugfix was converted by ycp-killer, so I expected it to be present in Code-11 -SP3 branch. But it's not. So I checked the 'good-bye-ycp' tag and I found some fixes[2] (including the one I was looking for[3]). Most of them have been ported to Code-11-SP3, but some of them are still missing (bnc#687249 or bnc#440554 for example). Obviously, all those fixes are present in master and SLE 12 branches. At this time, I'm going to merge only the fix I need. But, for the others, should we do something? Yeah, core version is problem as y2r require to have yast2-core with version at least 2.24.12 otherwise generated XML is not complete. For 12.3 we did it with specially shipped version of yast2-core, but it is not longer available, so what I suggest is to try new version of yast2-core on that machine ( expect that it can break some yast bindings, so it can cause cascade of updates ). Hello all, I’ve built a 12.3 VM, updated it to the latest levels, installed y2r… and it still gives me the exact same errors in Ruby when run it on my YCP module, like “undefined method to_sym” and random “unknown variable category”. Any ideas? I already tried doing it on 12.3, 13.2, Leap and SLES 11SP4 with similar results. I’m almost giving up on y2r and going for full manual conversion… Erico M. Does anyone have the ycp-killer appliance ISO based on opensuse 12.3? The one in SUSE Studio was deleted, and I need to convert a custom YCP module to Ruby. Hi all, When I took care of the yast-maintainers bugs I started using the ytrello tools [1] for creating Trello cards for bugzilla bugs. But then I was thinking about the possibility to check the current status and created a simple checking script which scans for the inconsistencies between Trello and bugzilla. It reports: - the YaST team bugs (yast-internal@...) which do not have corresponding card in Trello - the YaST team bugs which do not link to existing Trello cards - Trello cards which refer to a closed bug See the example output on the screenshot in the original PR [2]. Note: The script also has an experimental auto correction mode ("-a" option), which creates missing cards, add links to Trello,... But it seems to be quite dangerous, e.g. a Trello card might be kept open because an openQA test is planned so we still cannot remove the card but the bug in bugzilla is correctly closed as FIXED. So rather do not use it or at least run it without the auto-correct option first and check the reported issues for false positives.
