[yast-devel] Webyast - models in webclient and webservice - summary

Hi, because on Friday I finally merge in webclient yast model I create short summary of both models, its features and why you should use it. webservice model: Inspired by ActiveModel. It adds methods for easy validation, serialization, mass loading and callbacks. for example usage see Ntp and time plugins. For documentation see - class BaseModel::Base (I cannot connect to hudson for direct link) why use it? smart to_xml and to_json so you don't need to define own method unless you have hash with problematic keys (see time model for example how to solve it) validations which checks attributes before save same behavior as ActiveRecord and ActiveResource webclient model: Adaptation of ActiveResource to our case of changing site and credentials to target machine. It adds method model_interface which sets interface for model and fix finding single resource. Also helper methods for HttpMock which tests ActiveResource is added. for example usage see Time plugin or network plugin. For documentation see module YastModel::Base example of usage: class Stime < ActiveResource::Base extend YastModel::Base model_interface :'org.opensuse.yast.modules.yapi.time' end why use it? you can add functionality to model, so no more controllers which have more then one page same usage as any ActiveResource model, so new programmer is not confused what we using easier testing (there is still place to improve it), but I found that many plugins doesn't have test or test is really simple and don't cover enough code. for testing see how looks tests in network or time module. Hallo everybody, I have tried to renew the greman webappearance of YaST (because it was the oldest layout). Now I am needing some help. I'm getting to the developers documentation, and somethings don't make sense. -- basic YCP questions 1. Why do we need YCP. (an other scripting language would have done the same trick) 2. Why is YCP type based. 3. What is the use of Symbol and Trem Datatypes in YCP. (not the format) 4. What is the use of Byteblock Datatype. -- Modul design question Why is the SCR concept not used like it was defined in the documentation, to be the system IO. According to the Tutorial one should write a global API of the Modul to access data the Modul works with. This HACK would be redundant if SCR like described in the documentation, would provide the data. Hi, I have a question regarding the Repository manager feature. I found that PackageKit doesn't support all needed actions for this feature: Only alias, name, status (enabled/disabled) can be read, AFAIK there is no way to read url, keep_packages, autorefresh and priority attributes. Similar problem is with writing, only status, priority and autorefresh can be changed. It seems that we need to enhance PackageKit and libzypp-backend, or have I overlooked something? Hello, I cannot find where `id() is documented, i.e. what exactly does this symbol do in particular regarding UI functions. I am confused because http://forgeftp.novell.com/yast/doc/SL11.1/tdg/id_ycp_data_symbol.html reads "A symbol is a literal constant". In contrast http://forgeftp.novell.com/yast/doc/SL11.1/tdg/ChangeWidget.html reads "symbol widgetId Can also be specified as `id( any widgetId )" Therefore for example in UI::ChangeWidget(`id("widget_id_string"),... the literal constant `id("widget_id_string") seems to be more like a function call of a function named id with prototype/signature symbol id ( any ) but I cannot even find such a function documented. I use and used `id() by "look at other code" all the time but now I have the strange idea to try to understand it ;-) In particular I wonder why UI::whatever_widget_function(`id(`widget_id_symbol),... is used most often in YCP code instead of simply calling UI::whatever_widget_function(`widget_id_symbol,... which is also (less often) used in YCP code. For me `id(`widget_id_symbol) looks like a useless "call" of a symbol->symbol conversion. Hello, I like to permanently bind the Enter key to a PushButton. Currently I have in source/printer/src/basicadd.ycp --------------------------------------------------------------- `HBox ( `PushButton ( `id(`apply_driver_filter), `opt(`default), _("&Search for") ), `InputField ( `id(`driver_filter_input), --------------------------------------------------------------- I use `opt(`default) because this button must be the default so that it is activated when the user pressed the Enter key because when the user has clicked into the InputField to enter a search string, it is normal to finish entering by pressing the Enter key but if the Enter key was linked to 'Next' or 'Back' (which is the default), the user would get the wrong action. Unfortunately `opt(`default) does not work here. I assume whatever Wizard::... function call afterwards invalids this `opt(`default) and re-sets the default back to 'Next' or 'Back'. Therefore I added in source/printer/src/basicadd.ycp --------------------------------------------------------------- any user_input = nil; while( true ) { UI::SetFocus( `apply_driver_filter ); user_input = UI::UserInput(); --------------------------------------------------------------- as an attempt to re-set the default to my button but this does not help. My button has initially the focus but after the user had clicked into the InputField to enter a search string, the focus is of course gone and the Enter key is not linked to my button. Therefore my question how to _permanently_ bind the Enter key to a PushButton? Some .desktop files' Categories fields have a different X-SuSE-Yast* category than the X-SuSE-YaST-Group field (see bnc#374465). I assume the first patch (yast2-fix-desktop-files.patch) needs to be applied to trunk as well as the SLE11-SP1 branch? I've submitted patched packages for yast2-rdp and yast2-network for SP1. Hi, due to low test coverage and low quality of test case and code I think it is needed to set some basic rules which ensure some level of code and tests ( maybe you can be surprised how writing test improve code quality, because write tests to method which is more then one page long is extremely annoying, also properly test each XY parameters of method is really annoying, and testing model is much simpler then testing controllers or views). So proposal: - keep prerelease rule - no fix without failing test ( you must at first show test which demonstrate bug and then fix it in separate commit (but I suggest do it in one push to not break hudson)) - it has exception for fixes of spec file and lighttp configuration and UI redesign. - develop new functionality in branch and before merge check test (and only tests not code or run webyast) that functionality is implemented as expected - all plugins must have test case - commit often (so it is easier to review and test this small part). I think that you should commit at least once per day. FAQ: Q: It is hard to test THIS fix ( it is in controller, view, long method, corner case etc.)! A: Then code is not have enough quality. For corner case it is more important to write test for them to prevent regression. First bug can happen, regression is problem of tests, this cannot happen. Q: It is hard to write tests for webclient! A: I agree for previous release. Now it is quite easy and simple howto mail follow this one. Q: I don't know how to create branch in git! A: Ask on IRC! (for this case it is quite easy to do it) Q: I have another problem A: Ask on IRC or on mail if it is long story. I welcome any suggestions or comments. After discuss it will be placed on wiki. YaST hackers, this is JFYI, I've just svn-committed changes to most of those YaST modules that contain .desktop files. A .desktop file eligible for the update calls /sbin/yast2 (Exec=/sbin/yast2 $foo) and requires root privileges (X-SUSE-YaST- RootOnly = true). Now /sbin/yast2 calls in root-only modules are wrapped in xdg-su and X-KDE- SubstituteUID lines [1] are therefore no longer needed, thus they have been removed. This is a step towards desktop interoperability (a new buzzword, eh? :) ) and it makes YaST modules launchable from desktop menus or icons in any desktop environment, including "minor" players in this field such as XFCE or LXDE (this was possible even before, but without DE-independent way of prompting for root passwd provided by xdg-su, all but 7 YaST modules were of little use with non-root user privileges) As the change is about to affect openSUSE 11.3, I'm not going to do a mass submitreq with all modified packages. Hi, please find some ideas for a redesign of webYaST`s "Users" module at: http://home.arcor.de/martin.schmidkunz/ (wasn`t sure if it is a good idea to store all the jquery stuff in my Export...) It is based on rlihm`s mock up (http://gagarin.suse.de/) The basic concept is to show only the most important table entry on a top level (e.g. user name). Therefore there are fewer elements on the screen which eases the use of the module and increases its self-descriptivness and its task orientation. On a second level which the user accesses after clicking on the user name the user can choose whether to "edit" or "delete" the entry. Again it is avoided to show non-task related information. Before deleting an item the user is prompted an "Are you sure?" pop up in order to increase error tolerance and prevent the user from unintended data loss. "Edit" shows the settings of the list entry. If more settings are available they are organized in tabs. The "Edit" dialog is left either via "Save" or "Cancel" New list entries can be added via "Add New Item" button on top the list. Concerning "basic concept" * "Save"/"Cancel"/"Add" do not work properly in the mock up * "Add" should be a wizard * User needs to click "Save" twice (once in the edit tab and then in the main window) I am not sure whether this is intuitive. What do you think about that? * list should be sortable but I am not caple of implementing this technically Concerning "Users" module * When adding a user currently there are 8-9 settings which needed to be adjusted and some of them seem quite obscure to me. So, what do you think: which settings should be really editable via GUI? Currently there are: Full Name Groups Default Group (GID) Home Directory Do not create home directory Login Shell Login Name UID Number Password Full Name, Login Name, Password and Groups seem quite clear to me but is it really necessary to set login shell and UID in the GUI? Hey Group; This may be the wrong place to bring this up. However, it is a perceived Yast2 Printer problem. I have a Bother MFC-7840W USB laser printer that according to www.linuxprinter.org it works with Brothers drivers - I have them installed. lsusb and hwinfo --usb find it. And modprobe has all the modules required. But Yast2>Hardware>Printer under Add connection wizard USB will not show any devices or my USB printer. Why would this be the case. I went to USB and as I remember I hit enter and on the right side a new window shows up and is always empty. I need to reconfigure yast2 to only show specific modules once the system is configured for a non root user. OR give the user sudo access to yast2 and make the following the only available modules. lan dns routing timezone I was under the impresion the this can be done by editing /etc/YaST2/control.xml but I have had no luck. Any sugestions or advice would be welcome. Since I can't seem to find any documentation on modifing the yast2 configuration search result always come up with using yast to configure X. Hi there, For those who may not be aware what's out there, here's a couple of software managers I find interesting: The one from Mandriva 2009: http://yast2-gtk.googlegroups.com/web/Mandriva-2009.png I liked how they chose to use big icons for the categories window and it works quite well. The one from Suse studios (Jakub Steiner mentioned it): http://yast2-gtk.googlegroups.com/web/studio-kde-4.3.png It's not a simple bare bones software managers (like the webpine UI). Hi, in short: in branch for yast model I add also injector to HttpMock (standard library which is part of ActiveResource to test Rest-service based models) so if you plan write test look at it (or wait until it is merged). in long: Main goal to add models to webclient instead of dynamic one is easier testing of functionality which should go to model as controller is only thin layer which serves data. But I found that it is not so easy due to our design and also not so simple situation with rest-service site data. From my point of view correct testing of rest-service is provide same data as expected from rest-service and test if it work as expected. Now if test is ever present (not much models, I already fill bug) then it is huge mock which in real doesn't test much functionality. So we need some mock service which mock only target rest-service. Why I choose HttpMock? Even if our local consultant suggest use another framework I choose http because it looks like sufficient for our goal and it is already in ActiveResource so we don't need another gems. Why not use HttpMock without utilities? Of course it is possible, but you must simulate resource which translate interface to path and also permissions service which is out of test focus and test should not contain permissions service details. Also there is problem with authentication which must be solved on your own. So I create injector which add useful methods to HttpMock.
