Hi, when testing openSUSE 11.1/SLES 11 I came across a rather curious situation: many modules have already switched their label from Abort/OK(Accept, Finish...) to the style guide compliant Cancel/OK label. However in every case there is a third, inactive "Back" button included. This doesn't make sense as there is nothing to go back and the dialog is just an overview. I suppose this is due to many of you using wizard.ycp as base template for creating your module. What do you think about using the button box (http://lizards.opensuse.org/2008/08/28/button-order-in-yast-trying-to-make-…) instead of the buttons of wizard.ycp? In my opinion this would have the following advantages: * consistent button order in pop ups and in the module * user would not need to deal with an inactive button * button order in YaST would be consistent with the desktop used by the user What do you think about that issue? Hi! This is just a reminder, that the text freeze for openSUSE 11.0 strings in YaST is on Monday, April 21st, 10:00 AM. After the text freeze, string changes are only allowed, if the original message is so bad that translators do not have a chance to get it right. String additions due to bug fixes or because of missing _("tagging") are allowed. Typos and other cosmetical things will be fixed with overloads in en_GB.po and en_US.po files. Hi all, Because of bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381956 I added `opt(`repoMgr) option to the `PackageSelector widget (default is off now). The option enables starting repository management from the package selector directly. If you want to display the "Repository" menu in your module you should: * if `PackageSelector is used directly: add `opt(`repoMgr) option and handle `repo_mgr result - the best idea is to call WFM::CallFunction( "repositories", [ `sw_single_mode ]); `sw_single_mode means that the packages in the pool should be refreshed after adding/removing a repository) and then display the package selector again. * if inst_packages.ycp client is used call: symbol result = (symbol)WFM::CallFunction( "inst_packages",[`searchMode, `repoMgr]); in a loop (`repoMgr parameter enables the menu). If `repo_mgr is returned start repositories.ycp (see the previous paragraph) and then inst_packages.ycp again. Check your code and decide whether the "Repository" option makes sense in your modules adapt them according the steps above. Especially check for installation/running system. If you have any questions just ask me... (The `opt(`repoMgr) option is currently supported by Qt UI only.) Hi hackers, since yast2-2.16.57 you can use a new agent for reading and writing XML files from YaST. The SCR path is .anyxml - yes, it is same as the one of previous agent that we had before (it was announced in http://lists.opensuse.org/yast-devel/2007-11/msg00057.html) The old agent was found incapable for parsing more than very simple files and was renamed to .barexml, see bug 366867 for details. The new agent is using Perl XML::Simple library and is able to return whole content of XML file in a tree structure. Usage: Read a file /tmp/in.xml into YCP map: map config = (map)SCR::Read (.anyxml, $[ "file" : "/tmp/in.xml", "args" : $[ "ForceArray" : 0, "KeepRoot" : 1 ] ]); See the attached example XML file and it's YCP representation got as a result of this command. You can see that the call can take some optional arguments, the meaning of those 2 in example is "force nested elements to be represented as arrays even when there is only one" and "retain the root element name". The agent should actually be able to parse most[*] of the options that XML::Simple provides, see http://search.cpan.org/dist/XML-Simple/lib/XML/Simple.pm for more. But I have one request for that: Could we somehow make it more visible which log lines were released later, and where the segfault occurred? Currently IMHO it's very hard to find that dividing line: There is a lot of noise from the YCP interpreter (it even dumps the entire code to the log that is being executed - a bit overkill IMHO) and other libs. I'd like some indentation (some blanks or a tab) for those released log lines. Is that feasible? Morning, There is a generic bug 382778 - YaST desktop files should use Settings and System categories in bugzilla. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=382778 It's hard to assign it to one developer as almost all YaST desktops files are affected. The bug is about adding two more main categories to the list of categories supported by particular desktop file. Hi all, I have added these new functions into PackageCallbacks.ycp (yast2-2.16.52): RegisterEmptyProgressCallbacks() - registers empty callbacks RestorePreviousProgressCallbacks() - restores the previous registered callbacks (Pkg-bindings have a stack of registered functions for each callback, unregistering a callback means removing the function from the top of the stack.) If you need to temporarily turn off the callbacks then use the functions in a wrapper to ensure that the restoring function is always called: //disable callbacks PackageCallbacks::RegisterEmptyProgressCallbacks(); // Start the requested operation here DoActionWithoutCallbacks(); // restore the previous callbacks PackageCallbacks::RestorePreviousProgressCallbacks(); RegisterEmptyProgressCallbacks() sets empty callbacks for all progress callbacks, if you need to disable just a particular type of callback then use PackageCallbacks::SetDummy*Callbacks() and PackageCallbacks::Restore*Callbacks() functions. FYI: We just moved liby2util to the unsupported/ branch in SVN. Those of you building YaST2 from SVN might want to delete the local check-out of liby2util. The remaining relevant parts of liby2util had been moved to yast2-core/liby2util-r or to the UIs some time ago. If you wonder why debug logging sometimes doesn't work, check /usr/lib for several versions of liby2util and delete the oldest ones - that one might be the result of y2makeall building and installing that obsolete liby2util. Libzypp uses new locking api now. You can find it in Locks.h. Works everything except unlock, which I hope implement today. few notes about functions - supported is reading and writing locks to file (default is file specified in zypp.conf). - loadLock append to locks available, if someone find useful setting new locks instead appending (something like restore old locks for frontend) it can be added. - addLock locks all result of query and also store this query for later save, also Selectabable can be locked, it uses optimally query to lock - saving locks must frontend explicit call - saving locks rewrite locks file (as unwanted side effect remove all comments) - existEmptyLocks and removeEmptyLocks is functions to maintance locks. First say if exist some locks which doesn't lock anything and second clean it. While trying the new icon eyecandy in the package selector, I figure out .pat files have wrong icons (10.3) - patterns with no icons -> yast-system -> should be pattern-generic (this one is autocorrected by the code right now) - kde devel pattern should use pattern-kde-devel - gnome devel pattern should use pattern-gnome-devel - app armor should use pattern-apparmor - .NET environment should use pattern-mono - Base system should use pattern-basis and not the novell box - Base development -> pattern-basis-devel There are more, but those appear at first sight, because we have cool icons but not use them. I tested on 10.3, but a quick look reveals factory patterns have the same icons. Hi YaST hackers, I observe a kernel bug that happens only in YaST partitioning code. Probably the partitioner does some "weird" thing (load modules, etc.) that triggers the bug. How to debug this? Is it possible to trigger the same hardware detection code in a running system? Or do I need to rebuild the kernel (easy) and the installation initrd (because of modules)? Hi everybody, after some discussion and work I would like to present a first draft of a YaST style guide to you: http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Ysg.pdf The intention of the style guide is NOT to dictate every pixel in every module but to make some basic actions and behaviors consistent which increases usability. The work was mostly done by Lukas (locilka) and me. Nonetheless this is just a draft and I would like to see it as a base for further discussion. First of all because two people cannot represent the large variety of opinions you all have and what all of you consider as acceptable. Greetings All, Currently in factory Product::name, Product::distversion etc all return an empty string. Probably because there is no product installed. Is it planned to have products installed once zypp supports them again, or will Product.ycp obtain its data from somewhere else? Or is Product.ycp being dropped completely and I should use something else? At present I am using Product to determine which instructions from a YMP match the installed system. Hi, normally I don't criticise other peoples code but I just saw the kexec code in YaST. Just a call "kexec -e"! The current program and kernel is gone: No umount, no sync, no SCR flush, no start-script cleanup, no halt according to AutoYaST, no nothing. Use the method that has been there for years: Tell linuxrc what to do. Look at yast_inf_finish.ycp. Is it possible to make the src.rpm package for the YaST2-sound generate a new list of supported cards from the alsa modules that are present on the system? I see the script that is supposed to do that in yast2-sound-2.16.4/data/src but it doesn't get triggered when doing a rpmbuild --rebuild. [yast-devel] Small usability comment on YaST2 installer

Hi, Last weekend I gave a openSUSE 11.0 Alpha3 disk to a friend and made him install openSUSE... I tried to follow a bit what he did and where issues were. The biggest thing I've seen that he was to much attracted by the green next button, even though the system was busy and next not available (like on first screen, when system is initializing.. the next button is green and as there is nothing else, it's very attractive to click it... ). Otherwise he was not that much worried by the installation... except: the first user he wanted to create, as a typical windows user, he wanted to name it Admin... ;) but even that's a valid user... The partition proposal was a bit weird... he had a 40GB disk, 20GB filled with windows.. openSUSE suggested to delete windows and use the whole disk... of course *I* would agree to this.. he was not really pleased. Just select packages from Repository @System, and then as a secondary filter select "Unmaintained", and you will see all packages not available in any repository, but installed. In case Katarina or Ricardo want to mimic this, it is pretty easy, as once you have installed packages (either by status or from repo().isSystemRepo() ), you seect the ones whose selectable candidate is null. We needed this to make removing the permanent help panel in the NCurses wizard possible, but it might also be useful at other places (Popup.ycp?): You can now declare a push button a "help button". When activated, that button will now try to automatically show the help text that belongs to its dialog. The help text is stored as a (new) widget property `HelpText in some parent widget in that dialog, preferably a layout widget like `VBox() or `HBox(). Example: (ycp-ui-bindings/examples/HelpText.ycp) { UI::OpenDialog( `VBox(`id(`mainLayout), `Label("Hello, World!"), `HBox( `PushButton(`opt(`helpButton ), "&Help"), `PushButton(`opt(`default ), "&OK") ) ) ); UI::ChangeWidget(`mainLayout, `HelpText, "Oh, come on, do you really need help for this?" ); UI::UserInput(); UI::CloseDialog(); } Please note that we might do cooler stuff with this new `HelpText widget property, so for now please use it in this way. In the future, we might use this for tool tip help, so the dialog's help text should really be in a container widget like this VBox and not on the help button itself (otherwise the tool tip of that help button would be the entire dialog's help text - not desirable). Repository priorities implemented in zypper and yast following ma's work in libzypp (bnc#369827). Persistent package locks being implemented using generic queries (fate#120118). Redesigned ncurses packager widget is in the trunk now: http://duncan.mac-vicar.com/blog/archives/303 Pkg callback registration will use function pointers instead of strings (fate#302296). Get patch metadata also via Fedora's updateinfo.xml (one file instead of many). "I think there is no Fate or Bugzilla entry for that, only the unbound desire to get rid of superfluous data and complexities, to simplify it, improve it, and make customers happy :O)" Installation ------------ System installation will be extra fast, stay tuned for details. Kexec instead of reboot during the installation (fate#303395). Second stage of installation (after reboot^Wkexec) is non-interactive by default (fate#303396). Perl runtime errors will not make YaST crash now (fate#412). Miscellaneous ------------- Product Creator is catching up with Kiwi for 11.0, gets support for Kiwi profiles. [yast-devel] Let's make YaST more attractive

Hi, yast hackers, One of the action items of last YaST workshop was to make YaST look cool and sexy so that it is more attractive to our users. We have already make a great step towards achieving this goal, but we're somehow omitting two target groups: 1. text-mode (ncurses) users and 2. female audience. But our interface still lacks warm, soft, pastel colour shades that are so appealing to many women, so they may feel uncomfortable using YaST. This new default skin for xterm terminals tries to kill two birds with one stone: http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Pink-yast.jpg It gives entirely new look to text-mode interface and at the same time, is makes it very attractive for girls and women. Hi, Just now it might be the right time to change the name we have been using for years 'YaST'. It seems we (and our users) still consider this name being somehow 'geeky' [0]. Why should we do that :)? Well, I've found that people still don't know how to write it and similarly as a language evolves, we could follow our users and make it easier for them. Currently several mutations are in use: 'YaST', 'Yast', 'yast', 'YAST', ... The change could be trivial 'YaST' -> 'YAST' (because it is an abbreviation). We could compare the proposed change to 'SuSE' -> 'SUSE' (currently 'openSUSE', of course). Hi Hackers, Please, before you write your own SCR agent, check whether such agent doesn't already exist. We currently have two different SCR agents that modify the very same file 'etc_ssh_sshd_config.scr' [0] and 'sshd.scr' [1]. On the other hand, creating a dependency on another YaST module just because of such agent doesn't make sense. In such cases, it is better to unify and move the client(s) to some other package (often yast2.rpm). Why am I writing this here? Well, this is an example I've found unintentionally... [yast-devel] Type check in package callbacks => binary incompatibility of *.ybc

Hi developers! I just have implemented compile time type check in package callbacks (see fate#302296 or bnc#51913). In short: function references are now used instead of strings (e.g. Pkg::CallbackProgressDownload(PackageCallbacks::ProgressDownload) instead of Pkg::CallbackProgressDownload("PackageCallbacks::ProgressDownload") which was error prone). The advantage is that registering an invalid function is found at compile time now. Thanks to this feature I have found some problems and fixed them (missing callback functions, wrong parameters etc...) The disadvantage is that the binary compatibility of *.ybc files is broken now. Use 'y2tool y2compile' from yast2-devtools to recompile the modules after installing new yast2-pkg-bindings, yast2-packager and yast2. The implementation of the package callbacks has been moved to yast2.rpm to break cyclic dependency between yast2 and yast2-packager. Another change is that PackageCallbacksInit.ycp module is obsoleted now, but remains for backward compatibility. Use PackageCallbacks::InitPackageCallbacks() instead of PackageCallbacksInit::InitPackageCallbacks() in your modules. I have also adapted the other yast packages which register their own callbacks (autoinstallation, online-update, product-creator), please check my changes and submit the new package. The change was quite large (and spread across 6 packages), if you find any problem with the new callbacks then contact me. Hi, are there any objections to change FormatSizeWithPrecision to return "1 MB" instead of "1024 kB" and alike? Hi, I've just sent new yast2-installation into autobuild and one thing made me stop to think about our changes files: yast2-installation-2.16.28.tar.bz2 size: 225750 yast2-installation.changes size: 213761 Is it really wort having 208 kB of changes for such package? Is anybody interested in it? In my opinion, users are interested in the changes that have been made since the last release or codebase change. Ancient changes are just filling-up the RPM database, that's all. My proposal is to keep the changes file untouched but change the `make package` script to cut off a.) changes that belong to some older release (e.g., 10.2 vs 10.3) b.) changes that belong to some older codebase (e.g., 10.3 vs 11.0) We can simply use the package VERSION which should be increased by one with every release (currently 2.16, next will be 2.17). This would make our installation smaller, RPM faster and we would still keep our changes in SVN. The build service checks would have to be changed probably because they check for inconsistencies in changes files too. What do you think of that? Any better idea?
