No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

OpenOffice in Chinese locale

Hi, when I start OO in a Chinese locale on my otherwise German SuSE 9.0 system, using export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN (or zh_CN.UTF-8, or LANG=...., or similar) I can input Chinese characters using SCIM, but the file dialog of OO (Open etc) does not handle file or directory names containing German umlaut characters. Such names are not recognized as pertaining to OO files or to directories. Any help? Friedrich -- Friedrich Dimmling, Berlin, Germany

109 key Japanese keyboard

Hi I'm based temporarily in Japan and have acquired a 109 key USB Japanese keyboard for my laptop (running SuSE 9.0). It works fine, apart from the five "extra" keys (backslash, yen-sign and the three "henkan" keys around the spacebar), which do not produce any kind of input. xkeycaps shows these keys do not seem to generate a keycode, except when pressing certain combinations together, which seems to register a press on the CTRL-key. Anyone have an idea how to get these keys working? (While I'm not too bothered about the "henkan" keys I'd very much like the backslash, otherwise I'm limited to using a non-Japanese layout which can be slightly tedious). Thanks Ian Barwick

Normally the backslash key inputs a yen-sign when not shifted or an underscore when shifted. Normally the yen-sign key inputs a yen-sign when not shifted or a vertical bar (pipe or or operator) when shifted. The unshifted forms are redundant but the shifted forms are not. Also if the font is not Japanese then the yen-sign displays as a backslash since it is the same code point, but again it doesn't matter which key it came from. Kernel developers have repeatedly broken the input of the backslash and yen-sign keys, especially on USB keyboards, but sometimes on PS/2 keyboards too. Sometimes I could fix it myself, sometimes I needed help. My fixes have always been ignored. But one time I finally convinced someone who isn't a kernel developer, and he persuaded a kernel developer to fix it, which he did, though not using my fix. If you can install a kernel from the 2.4 series (probably anything after 2.4.10 or thereabouts) then it should work for you. Rumour has it that the latest 2.6 series (probably 2.6.5) works too, but I haven't tested it yet. Other actual "extra" keys (hankaku/zenkaku/Kanji, Microsoft sperm key, muhenkan, henkan, hiragana/katakana/Ro-maji, and Microsoft other key) usually don't need to produce any input in Linux. I'm not sure if ATOK uses the Japanese henkan keys, but the usual (free) Linux IMEs don't.

Hello Friedrich, if Your default locale is de_DE@euro, it uses the iso8859-1 codepage, but for a system like Yours, the adequate would be unicode (utf8). Utf8 can display *both* chinese and german text. iso8859-1 and the chinese standard GB2312 are codes containing only the charakters needed for german respectivly chinese, so with them you cannot use mixed content. Try setting the following values in YaST/ System/ 'Editor für die sysconfig-Dateien'/ System/ Environment/ Language: RC_LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 RC_LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 ROOT_USES_LANG=ctype the other values are to be left empty. Click 'ok' and reboot (here, it's necessairy, I think. Always remembers me of the old times with m$ windows - the worst ever was 5 subsequent reboots for a single program installation, I think, for an anti-virus prog or something, these were times... ;-) Now You should be able to input chinese text in OpenOffice without starting it with that script You spoke of, or prior setting of variables. Just start it the normal way and let me know if this solved Your problem. You also will have to rename all files & dirs containing umlaute, but this is no work compared to the code-swiching kuddelmuddel without unicode. Marcel Boeing Am Donnerstag, 22. SuSE 9.1 && cyrillic

Hi. In a couple of weeks SuSE 9.1 will be released. I'm interested to know will the Cyrillic work out-of-the-box? I mean a) Will there be an option "Russian" in YaST installer b) Will the xmms-recode patch be applied c) Can I expect the @recode@ option in SuSEplugger (checkhotmounts) Greetings, Alex
