No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

SuSE's path and menu format

Happy new year! ^^ (well, Chinese new year.) Trying to compile a zh_TW input method, but the path got some problem. Does Suse use same menu format and path like Mandrake and Debian? If no, where can I find the imformation about it? Thanx :)

How to use scim on Terminal?

Konqueror 3.2.1 and ACCEPT-LANGUAGE

Hi there, Would any of you KDE/Konqueror gurus be able to enlighten me as to the mechanics behind Konquerors handling of multilingual web content? I browse to an Apache server (2.x series) and I'm transparently served the language set in the brower for Mozilla 1.7 and Firefox 1.0. Konqueror seems to ignore it. I've modified both $KDEHOME/share/config/kio_httprc and the slave one (forgot already) and dcop'd KIO::Scheduler etc.. (as per the Konqueror FAQ). I've had no luck so far. Also set language in Control Center and ran Konqueror from the shell after a LANG change. Am I missing something insanely basic? Thanks Steve.

But such a file already exists in SuSE 9.2 and its contents look not too bad. Here is another font.properties.ja file you might try: http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/m17n/font.properties.ja It contains the line appendedfontpath=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype which is equivalent to creating the above mentioned symbolic link. Without that line, Java looks only in a directory called "TrueType", therefore the symlink helps, with that line Java looks only in the directory "truetype". I still don't understand this font.properties.ja file well though. Apart from the line for the extra font path, most other stuff in that file seems to have no effect. Without that font path line or without that symbolic link I cannot make it work it at all on my SuSE 9.2-i386 system, no matter how I edit fonts.properties.ja. And, what's worse, I even have another machine where nothing helps, just as in your case. Hi List. i dont know, but i have a feeling that SuSE's mainling Lists are open to spam? From SuSE's web site, in the mailing lists archives, the sender's email address is not hidden... Is this a problem or not? Thanks and soory for the OT.

This file contains lines like filename.-misc-sazanami_mincho-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype/sazanami-mincho.ttf Here it is important that the character between "sazanami" and "mincho" ia an underscore and not a space as in the XLFD or in the other entries in font.properties.ja like: serif.3=-misc-sazanami mincho-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1 Without the underscore these lines are ignored. And if these lines are ignored, Java has problems to find out which font file belongs to which XLFD. If the directory where the fonts are is configured with appendedfontpath=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype (or a symlink exists), Java might find the correct fonts even without working filename.PlatformFontName entries, but apparently this depends on how many and what type of fonts are installed, therefore it can work on some machines and fail on others. It is not reliable possible to infer the font file name only from the XLFD, therefore this hint is needed to make sure Java finds the correct font file. The "lucida-medium" fonts exist only in iso10646-1 encoding, not in iso8859-* encodings. Opera slow when accessing Asian pages

Hi everybody. The Opera web browser keeps slowing my complete system down to almost freezing it for like a minute or so, every time I access web pages with Asian fonts in them. Once a page is completely visible, everything seems to be fine again and this also seems to be a first-access problem only. I have here Suse 9.0 with current updates and Opera 7.54u1 (downloaded from the Opera home page) on a PIII, 450 MHz system with 384 Mibyte of RAM. This seems to be an Opera problem, but I thought that somebody of you might have some idea already what the root cause could be. Thanks :) Rolf Lochbühler Xi'an, China

Java and Japanese

How can I set up Java under SuSE 9.2 that application programs written in Java recognizes japanese fonts without setting the japanese input method (see e.g. jgloss as an application written in java but cannot display japanese font; see http://jgloss.sourceforge.net/japanesejava.html for a description how to set it up but which is unclear where to get the fonts from). A similar program is Cgoban which shows japanese fonts under Win XP but not under SuSE.
