No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

ghostscript and LyX-CJK

Dear list, I just installed SUSE9.3, japanese version, in Unicode. Basically everything works, except two snags: 1) lyx-cjk-1.3.5-3 does not allow for kanji input in the main window. I tried this after starting kinput2 -canna& LANG=ja_JP LC_XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2" lyx-cjk I can see japanese text, e.g. the splash.lyx file. I can input Japanese if I open the "find" dialog, or in the lower bar, the minibuffer, and even copy and paste the result into the main window, but NOT enter Japanese directly. This worked still fine with SUSE 9.1. 2) Next, ghostview. I took an example file, like http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/vertical-orizontal-test.ps I verified that I can open this in my old SUSE8.2 and see all characters correctly. Next, I open it with gs as normal user in 9.3, from bash. Hebrew Type1 font problem

Hello everyone, I was wondering if there might be some font experts around. For Hebrew (working in Suse Linux 9.1), I downloaded a couple of free to use fonts via http://culmus.sourceforge.net/ That's all legal and permitted etc, and it worked for a few weeks, but suddenly the fonts didn't come out anymore in OpenOffice. I'm not sure if this is a pure "m17n" question but please don't throw me out yet ;-) I installed the fonts (which are PostScript Type1 fonts) in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 directory. First I just put the file, which was a tar.gz file, there as /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/culmus-0.101.tar.gz This worked for a while. So I guess when importing the fonts, those files were automatically "unzipped"? Later I installed a few Arabic Truetype fonts in the same way (except in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype of ocurse, but that didn't work. Apparently these were not unzipped ("de-compressed") automatically? So I took the compressed files out, by saving them somewhere else, and installed them all manually. Now that (still) works. The Arabic fonts all look perfect (but they're truetype). I configured all the fonts as active, but I can't find anywhere in any OpenOffice FAQ or such, what I did wrong. Can free fonts just "expire"? Even if they're designed for free use? Then I also have some directory called /usr/share/fonts/he/Type1 Here, "/he/" must stand for Hebrew. There, those fonts are also stored, I guess uncompressed. I didn't make that directory, I don't know who did ;-) Does that have anything to do with it? (Hebrew is the main Complex-Text-Layout (CTL) enabled language for OOo on my system.) I didn't want to bother you, but I thought the problem is interesting, anyway I'm getting to understand less of how fonts work everyday. Thanks and regards, Herman

The name seems to refer to Hebrew fonts. So basically, all fonts on SuSE 9.3 ftp lists can be used by 9.1, you mean? Anyway as soon as I have some money I'll get me a 9.3 box. But my wife is pregnant and doesn't want me to spend too much time on the computer. For anyone who wants to use non-western languages without having to use more than one keyboard, or buy a fancy keyboard for that special language, I "discovered" that if you cut up some little Post-it style stickers and write the character on them, and put them in a corner of the keys, you can always remove them later on without messing up the keys. Especially good for black keyboards. Regards Herman

The David, Drugulin, and Frank Ruehl fonts are really needed for various kinds of texts people would want to make in Hebrew: newspaper, literary or informative texts have to be in one of those just to "look good". As for Arabic, now we're talking anyway, I'd recommend that the Kacst-package for Arabic is no longer the only one to be included in Suse versions. That package has only one day-to-day use font (KacstBook), the rest is rather decorative. I got some nice Truetype fonts from the ArabEyes project, http://www.arabeyes.org/ and some other so-called Farsi fonts that are even better. The Farsi fonts are good because they don't get cut up in OpenOffice when they carry vowel signs. I don't know why. However, the entire Arabeyes package has too many nonsense, unreadable fonts, like "ae_Japan". Good if you want to advertise your Sushi bar in Cairo, I admit. I'd say one could include at least ae_AlHor, ae_AlMateen, ae_AlMohanad, ae_Rasheeq, for example, and the KacstQurn-font; and the Farsi fonts Nazli, Roya, and Terafik. Something else I would like to address: There is also a desire to have a Syriac layout for Linux. This, Aramaic, alphabet is almost exactly like Hebrew (same consonants). There are many who study it. Does anyone know if such a layout is there already, or if it's worked on? ((For your entertainment, only three years ago, I had to type Syriac for a Leiden institute. I typed words in MS Word in ordinary Latin. They later turned into Syriac in an external program they didn't give me. It looks rather crazy looking back. I was typing things like: whw' mn btr dqTl 'lksndrws br pylypws mqdwnyl dnpq mn 'r`' dkty:' wmHyhy wqTlh ldrq$ hlk' dpy:sy' wdmdy' w'hlk Hlpqhy lwqdh dyn 'hlk bhld' Yes, that actually means something! It's a piece of "Maccabees". For example, " 'lksndrws br pylypws mqdwnyl " means "Alexander, son of Philip, the Macedonian".)) People usually refer to Syriac fonts as "Serto" or "Estrangelo", sort of the basic cursive ("handwriting") and manuscript ("printing") alphabeths. Its looks are between Arabic and Hebrew. Actually, Arabic script is developed out of Syriac script. I found a non-Complex Text Layout Syriac font made by some scholar, but it's absurd, you have to type them backwards. The letters do have to be lined up, like Arabic. Unlike Hebrew, where all letters are separated, like western alphabeths. I'd like to do something about that myself, if it's not there yet. Would anyone be able to say where I'd find a "dummies guide" for (Complex Text Layout) font making and also glueing them together? Regards, Herman

Hello, I already had put all the Type1 fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1, one by one, but it doesn't work. I put a few fonts in ~/.fonts too, but that doesn't work either. Mike, you mentioned that is a way of testing, so the test is negative. Can there be files that "disturb" fonts or something, or files that are needed together with fonts? The full package content is there. Are the extensions right? I see two main extensions: {font}.afm and {font}.pfa, and there are files like local.conf and so on. Should I get rid of, or change, the usr/share/fonts/he/Type1/ directory, could that stand in the way of something? The mystery is not that it does not work; I wonder why it did work before, and now doesn't. Maybe I got bugged? Regards, Herman

Problem to view chinese character in SuSE 9.3

Hi all, In SuSE 9.2, I could view the text file which contains big5 characters using vi on mlterm However, after I have installed SuSE 9.3 from scrach, I find that I could not view the characters correctly with the same text file in vi anymore.
