No compose characters possible with asian language setting

Hello! I'm currently using SuSE 9.0 pro for both german and japanese input. This works fine so far, by setting the variables LC_CTYPE to ja_JP.UTF-8 and LANG to de_DE.UTF-8, but nevertheless I experienced a problem: With the LC_CTYPE set to japanese and an input method running (currently kinput2), I cannot type european language compose characters any more - at least the ones I used to produce with two sequent keystrokes ( ´ and e for é for example). The rest of my (german) keyboard layout works all fine, and with LC_CTYPE set to german, é's, à's, ô's, etc pose no problem, but then, of course, I cannot input japanese... This problem seems also to be existent for other language settings that use an input method, I tried it out with a friend who uses chinese input (also on SuSE 9.0 pro). We (my friend and I) are currently writing an article about asian language input with StarOffice/OOo, so we would really appreciate any help or hint concerning this problem. Thanks. Marcel Boeing

Dear friends of CJK-internationalization, can somebody give me a hint, where I find the right rc.config-file under SUSE 9.1 personal, where I can put the START_CANNA="yes" line? kinput2 + cjk-lyx problem on SuSE 9.2 pro

Hello, I bought Suse pro 9.2 Japanese edition and am trying to use cjk-lyx on it. But cjk-lyx does not recognize kinput2 . Shift-space is just recognized as a space, although kinput2 is running and the values of the environment variables seem correct: LANG=ja_JP.eucJP XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2". I think the problem is proper to cjk-lyx on Suse 9.2 because (1) cjk-lyx+kinput2 on Suse 9.1(ftp version) worked fine. (2) kinput2+xemacs works fine even on Suse 9.2 . Any suggestion? Best Ko

But the texts which *are* displayed by Konqueror may be correct. If I cut and paste some Tamil texts from Firefox displaying http://www.google.co.in/ into gedit, gedit displays them the same way as Konqueror. I searched a bit with Google and it appears that Mozilla and Firefox don't support Tamil yet. But there is a patch available to use m17n-lib to enable Mozilla to render Tamil correctly: http://www.m17n.org/m17n-lib/mozilla/index.html This page says the patch is still experimental. Fonts in platex

Hello I recently made a bilingual (English and Japanese) newsletter (see http://euij.hit-u.ac.jp/pub/newsletter_and_reports.html) using CJK-LaTeX. First I tried the Sazanami Gothic Fonts (also Wadalab Gothic), but got a lot of complaints from my Japanese colleagues as well as from the printing company about readability, style and quality of the font. Then I used msgothic (which was easy to install thanks to Mike's precautions) and everybody was satisfied. So far so good. Now I'm experimenting with platex, which is said to be better for Japanese text. I'm not sure whether it is worth the trouble, though. The basic things seem to work, but I failed to find out how I can use both gothic and gothic bold (which is possible with CJK-LaTeX, at least through a poor man's bold modus, if I remember well). I tried the following: \documentclass{jsarticle} \usepackage{morisawa} \begin{document} 日本語 {\gtfamily 日本語} {\gtfamily\bfseries 日本語} \end{document} Using pdvips the first two lines show up correctly (with msmincho and msgothic). The third line produces only garbage. I guess that the problem is simply that no gothic-bold font is installed. I experimented around, also using MS HGRSGU.TTC, but I didn't find out how to connect it to FutoGoB101-Bold-J.tfm (which is - as far as I understood - the tfm file wich is used by the morisawa package for the \gtfamily\bfseries combination). Actually I'm quite confused at the moment. Perhaps someone can give me some hints how to proceed methodically. Also I would appreciate some hints regarding good (and perhaps cheap) Japanese fonts for LaTeX. By the way I also tried to install the otf package but basically ended with the same results as with the morisawa package. The otf package could be a good candidate for a future SuSE package, perhaps also dvipdfmx. I came across these two repeatedly while googling around. One more "by the way": xgdvi failed to display the above example with messages such as: "mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for futogo-b", FutoGoB101-Bold-J, and gtbbb-m. Maybe I messed up some configration files in the meantime. Best wishes Gerhard Schuck

gb2312 problems in KDE 3.3.2

Hi everyone! Since KDE 3.3.x I'm having problems with gb2312 web-pages in Konqueror. Many characters cannot be displayed (they come as a dot "·", or something like that).
