problem with 5 in 1 Cardbus in Compaq R3240US

Hi I have a Compaq R3240US laptop. I am running SuSe 9.1 64 bit on it. Most of the hardware are working fine but I am unable to access the 5 in 1 Card Reader (CardBus). I found that a driver named yanta is assigned to work with the Card bus ,but now I do not know how to access the Card reader. Hi again. Thanks for your help. I tried using YOU to install the nvidia driver. Let me explain how it didn't work. My monitor has a resolution of 1400x1050, and this is how I like to work. But after I finish the YOU procedure for the instalation of the nvidia driver, the resolution was set to the lower value of 1024x768. Besides, the text console, even if it wasn't out of sync, was not satisfactory, it showed many regularly spaced white stripes. Wen I set the resolution up again to 1400x1050, I got again the syncing problems. I found the Opteron to be the best all around two-way and four-way database platform for Oracle. They have proven to be rock solid performers and very stable on SLES 8 I have two 4-way 844 and 846 Celestica Servers (From the company formerly known as Racksaver, AKA Verari) 8GB of RAM Two HP 6400 RAID Controllers HP Storageworks We are running the AMD64 version of 9i with great success as well as the 32-bit version on the 64bit version SLES8. I haven't had any issues with hardware configuration with these servers and Suse. Our DBA's and report writers are astounded by the performance vs. our old Sparc boxes. We also have several two-way 246's from Verari as well. Unfortunatly, they are running Windows and MSSQL. :( Our Win software developers love the Opterons performace. (I attempted to show them the light with Suse and Mono. NIC is built-in GB. Haven't tried the operations you speak of. I have a 7xxx series 3ware sata controller and it installed and ran primo so once the escalade series developers get caught up in the 64bit arena I am sure those will play nice too. We have three clusters, the first two purchased a year ago. The small one is 20 nodes: - MSI K8D Maaster MB - Dual Opteron 242 (1.6GHz) - 4 GB RAM - Two WDC 2500 - 1U rackmount chassis (Chenbro, I think) The large one is 152 nodes, same MB, CPUs, and disks, only 2GB RAM. - 1U Appro chassis The new one is 160 nodes, Opteron 250s, 4 GB RAM, and same disks, - Appro blade chassis. We also have a sprinkling of development nodes using the 244 CPUs, some of which are using Adaptec 39320 HBAs to connect to RAIDs for NFS service. (I would use Coda, but our Solaris clients do not have that.) These systems are used for processing tropospheric emissions data in an attempt to retrieve chemical consituents in the air. They are not used in the normal sense of "clusters"; we just run a lot of independent parallel jobs. eyc

If you're adventuous you can compile the kernel modules for this yourself and try if they work for you (set CONFIG_ATM to "m") Not all parts of ATM may be bad on 64bit. But we didn't have any way to test PPP over ATM, so we just disabled it. Please only attempt this when you already have basic knowledge on how to recompile a kernel. -Andi

Amd64 internet not connecting

I've install Suse 9.1 onto my machine but am having problems when I try to connect to the internet. I get the error message linux pppd[4602]: socket(AF_ATMPVC, SOCK_DGRAM, 0): Address family not supported by protocol linux pppd[4602]: Failed to open 0.38: Address family not supported by protocol Can anyone help please ?

Hi, I have the same stresses: In December I bought the AMD64 and SuSE 9.0 SuSE wouldn't install and it took three months of very poor support to discover that there was a problem. So I lashed out and bought SuSE 9.1 This version installs, but... I have been unable to connect to the internet ( had to buy another PC for that) And nobody seems to be able to advise me on how to configure my system so that I can code with X Window or Xt. It is nearly 11 months of hassle. Anybody recommend SuSE? Colin Carter

Örn, Im not the original on this thread, But I too have been unable to get my Internet connection to work under SuSE 9.1 on my AMD 64 box. My first guess would be that the original poster has a winmodem and needs to install drivers specific to the winmodem. However, I do know that an issue does exist with SuSE 9.1 and perfectly good controller based modems. My modem is a pci modem from Actiontec. This is a controller based modem, not a winmodem This modem works fine under Gentoo , debian, and Win XP on the same machine for all uses. Please note that I said my internet connection does not work under SuSE. The actiontec pci modem is recognized and set up correctly under Yast. I can use the modem with minicom with no problems. However, the normal Yast set up connection and the Kinternet front end fail to establish a ppp connection with my isp. I had opened a ticket with SuSE when I first installed 9.1, but my support time has long since past. Both SuSE and I have failed to solve the problem directly. I play with things like the acpi setting and lcp-max configure settings every now and then, but I have not yet found the conflict. Everything works well in other distros, and I have configured a script to work from minicom to log me in to my isp and negotiate a connection using expect for when I use SuSE. I have tried an external modem, and it does not show the same errors, but I need my serial ports for other devices. Since I have a script working, I am not in desperate need of a solution. If I ever figure it out I will e-mail SuSE with my original help ticket number and let them know what I find. I suppose in the end my problem could have been memory or something, but I just didn't want to spend the time debugging it. My system wasn't functioning in 64-bit or 32-bit mode. Eventually I went back to the Intel and all is good. I'll wait a couple years to do the 64-bit upgrade. I agree with Einar, I too would recommend SuSE's 64-bit Linux. We have been running SLES-8 for some months now on a dual Opteron system with no problems what so ever. Having said that, I did have issues in the beginning with corrupted file systems. My issue turned out to be one of the most basic, my VAR sold me a hardware solution that was not SLES 8 compliant, my RAID array was SATA. SATA support, to my knowledge, didn't appear in SLES until 9. Since the VAR replaced all of the SATA with PATA it has run like a dream. I have a support contract with SuSE, which was used extensively in configuring the machine. The support personnel were excellent to work with, both in their attitude and the knowledge they provided. The responses to my questions were always prompt and provided me with the information that I needed to get through my issues. Because of these reasons I do continue to recommend SuSE's SLES for all of our Linux needs, including Oracle servers. screen out of sync

Hello! I have an Asus L5000 laptop with a nVidia GeForce FX graphics card and things are running reasonably well. However, wen I press [Ctrl][Alt][F1] to escape the X environment into a text-only interface, my screen gets out of sync! Does anybody know of a simple fix to this? I wonder what my problem is, then. I turned SATA off. Is there any particular setting you tweaked in the BIOS? Did you upgrade the BIOS? Did you do anything different? As another poster mentioned, the only issues I've had are compiling certain packages 64 bit. All the SuSE provided software on the DVD works fine out of the box. Getting DVD stuff to work 64 bit is a royal pain. Certain things flat out aren't available, like a 64 bit flash player. Other than the software issues, I've had no problem at all. hello- I have a lot of trouble setting up a nfs-client: I want to mount a filesystem on a SME-server with nfs. But whatever i do i get this messages ; mount: RPC: Program not registered I dont understand it our windows can easyly reach the filesystem on the server. When i try to use yast , it cannot find any nfs-server on the lan. More information on my dual-boot problem. I first installed the 64bit . Since I used the default settings it installed in the MBR. Next I installed the 32bit . This also went into the MBR. After this I could only see the 32 bit install. I used the install/repair to get the 64bit visable at boot. I edited menu.lst and added the 32bit install . image = /boot/vmlinuz ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: Linux32### label = Linux32 initrd = /boot/initrd optional root = /dev/hda7 vga = 0x317 append = "splash=silent console=tty0 desktop resume=/dev/hda5 showopts" When I try to boot this the log shows /dev/hda7 but acts as if it is still loading the 64bit. uname shows x86_64 and I get lots of load errors that go along with this. When you install the loader defaults to MBR. There are other choices /dev/hda* . There is no explanation of why or when to use these options. There are also additional selections on saving to MBR and also no real explanation of when to use them. Both installs are really there but I seem to be able to boot only one of them.

I did install it as standard x86 on my setup and it worked like a dream. It's just the 64-bit I'm having trouble with. I had a few hangups here, on my system ... first was due to the BIOS, which was solved when I upgraded. Had to do with DMA, which need to be or the system will be significantly slower. Second, I've had a few apparent freezes ... which are mostly the system just locking itself for a few seconds, or longer and than coming back to life. Otherwise, SuSE 9.1 has worked marvelously for me since it came out. My system is an MSI NEO, AMD64 3000+ with 512Mb memory. After reading a bit, I came across that a possible scenario for hangups is the power supply. If it's flaky, it can cause power drop to the cpu which will stop working properly ... something to look out for, if you built your system on an older box, with new Mobo + Cpu.
