Has anyone managed to get any DVD playing software running properly under SuSE 9 for the AMD64? I've got an ASUS K8V Deluxe MB and an NVIDIA GF5200FX video card, for what that's worth. I've been trying, with little success, to compile a working version of the 'Ogle' DVD player, but am running into all sorts of dependency issues with RPMs, and missing library issues compiling from source. If someone else has gotten this working, I'd be interested in hearing exactly what RPMs/source files you used and what steps you followed. I have 32 bit apps that were simply dragged and dropped into the 64 bit systems with some performance improvements. But the big improvements came when we recompiled our apps using new versions of GCC that supported the 64 bit architecture of the Opterons. For our numerically intensive applications, we saw over 70% improvements over 32 bit systems running at the same clock speed. But there was another cost that affected the throughput. The 64 bit compiled apps would use up more memory, so the memory that was just adequate to support the 32 bit apps would not be enough for 64 bit apps, and the subsequent swapping would make the apps run very slowly, as expected. I think that if you can rebuild your mysql binaries from source on the 64 bit system using the latest GCC compilers, you can gain huge increases in performance as well. eyc

Sles9 ntpd failing to start

Bouncing to this list too since it might be an amd64 thing.. Error: ntpd[527]: cap_set_proc() failed to drop root privileges: Operation not permitted This is on amd64 hosts, google search didn't dig up much.. few mentions of another package, and one ntpd with this, but I didn't see a resolution. Have 30 blades like this.. same hw in a workstation works, though I YOU'd it the other day so it's more up to date then blades... but I YOU'd one of the blades and it's still failing there. These are either simple striping (RAID0) or mirroring (RAID1). The hardware really doesn't do much in most cases. I think most of them can be configured to present the disks straight to the OS, and let you treat them as regular disks. I am told that configuring RAID0 or RAID1 from Linux can sometimes get better performance out of them than if you let the hardware do the same things. Again, the Linux OS does not have to do much to perform those functions. But my experience is that if one of the drives fail, it's much harder to recover a RAID1 set from Linux than if you had let the hardware take care of the RAIDing. (If you lose a drive in a RAID0 set, you've lost all the data anyway.) The value that a high performance RAID controller gives you is the ability to combine many drives (5 or more) together to provide greater throughput, higher capacity, and redundancy to protect against single drive failures. Such a RAID controller will have a number of features: - Multiple separate disk channels to allow each drive to communicate uninterrupted with the controller. All the new RAID systems using PATA or SATA drives will provide a separate channel for each drive, so each drive becomes a bus master. - A hardware CRC calculator to generate the redundancy code in real-time. Any RAID systems that have to use your CPU to generate the code will be much slower, and sort of defeats the performance aspect of RAID. I am told that the speed of most x86 based processors today may out perform most hardware CRC generators. This may be true, but I still would not want to dedicate my host CPU to processing RAID data. - Some amount of cache memory to buffer host requests. This may be the most important factor for getting good response from a RAID controller. Today's RAID systems can make use of two levels of cache; a large chunk on the controller, and whatever the drives come with. Write requests are usually set up with write-back caching, so host response is pretty instantenous. Without the write-back cache, write requests will have to wait for the actual disk operations to complete. In this case, the more drives there are in the RAID set, the greater the percentage of latency; A write operation from the host will be divided by the number of drives in the set, and the more drives in the set, the smaller chunk of data goes to each drive. But each request to each drive still incurs the same amount of latency. A potential problem with write-back cache is data inconsistency in the event of a power failure. So the RAID systems that guarentee reliability will have some kind of battery backup for the cache in the controller. (But that doesn't do much for the cache in the disks.) Read requests will have to depend on cache look-ahead strategies on the RAID controller. The first of a series of sequential read requests will be slow, as the controller has to wait for seeks and reads from all the drives to complete before handing the data back to the host. Subsequent requests for sequential should be much faster. Some RAID controllers can optimize this with the disk cache. (More than you wanted to know, I'm sure.) eyc

usb drive problem emachines 6811/kernel 2.6.5-7.108-default

When I upgraded kernels I lost my usb drive access. usbview shows it when I plug it in, but it never automounts. Worked fine before the kernel upgrade. I'm new to the usb auto-mounting business, so advice on what to look for would be helpful. Thanks, Warren MacEvoy

I am relatively new to linux and suse. i've been running Suse 9.1 on an AMD64 as a guest os under VMWare. We've been testing linux capabilities but keeping windows as main os for windows network admin etc. Well I'm ready to switch to Suse 9.1 64 as host os and put windows on as guest. the problem is RAID. My mother board, ASUS K8V has on board raid which i have been told is not "TRUE" RAID and therfore not supported. So now, I'm considering software RAID or buying an inexpensive 2 channel SATA RAID controller. My question is, - Is hardware RAID worth the extra money in performance/reliability/etc or should I go with software raid - If hw RAID is the way to go, which has driver support for 64-bit linux? I currently have a dual 244 machince and a dual 248 machine at my disposal for testing purposses. The 248 machine is load up with a tyan board 64 bit nic, 64 bit sata raid 10 with four 10k rpm hard drives, 2 gig of ecc ram.The Dual 244 is a little more modest with 1 gig of ram, onboard raid 1 with two 10k sata drives. Feel free to contact me if you want me to test anything out, I also have a pair of single CPU opteron 240's, but they are running as win 2003 64 bit domain controllers. Ok ok... I'll try using the smake build system again... and see what comes of it it was a few years ago that I last tried, when I was working at Weta Digital and was trying to get a DVD-writer working (at the point it was easier said than done)... Ok I don't want to continue adding coal to the fire here, and i'm not one to break up a good flame war =-). I think perhaps tho considering Andi has access to a rather large number of opteron build environments and Joerg needs a test system perhaps working together on this might be desirable. Joerg if you need an opteron test platform e-mail privately and I'll setup ssh access to mine... I can't gurantee the cleanliness of the environment tho. But it's a fresh kernel from kernel.org, gcc 3.3 with backported k8 extensions. I can see an easy resolution to this problem, but it involves working together, I'm guessing once Joerg has access to an opteron running linux, he can make a list of issues arising for someone (Andi?) who knows the amd64 linux arch far better than I from a coding level. Anyway, Again I thank both of you for continuing to acknowledge the issues revolving around this issue. Dail up problem with SuSe 9.1 64 bit

Hi I am using Compaq R3240US laptop with SuSe 9.1 64 bit Linux. I am having problem with Dial up. From Yast2 I found that the laptop's internal modem is detected as HP Internal Modem but when I try t query the modem from KPPP I get mode busy. I tried ttyS0 - ttyS3 as device but same result. Also yast2 may find my modem but unable to get where it is attached. (ttyS0 or ttyS1). So I tried manually , I already written the result. Now does SuSe 9.1 has a modem driver for it else , I think I have no hope. Currently my modem & card reader is not working under Linux & since I have linux only my box I am having problem to work with this machine. Also please tell me , from yast2 I get the chip set of my machine is nForcer so , I should install the nForcer driver from www.nvidia.com TIA Anirban Biswas. -- If Bill Gates is the Devil then Linus Torvalds must be the Messiah.

swap problem

I am running a very large process (14 Gb), although it require less memory than is available, it picks up swap memory and the process run very slowly. Any ideas on why this is so. Dear All, Did you meet this issue on any other mother board ??? The system configuration is : OS : Suse 9.1 Professional x86_64 (original kernel ) MB : Iwill DK8X AMD64 platform (8111+8151+8131) Memory : 1G DDR400 Reg/ECC (Samsung chipset ) x 8 pcs CPU : AMD Opteron 248 or 246 Video: PNY Nvidia Quadro FX 3000 or FX 1100 The situation is : After OS installation finishs first step and requests reboot system , the system reboot then OS boot linux from Hard disk . But after that ,OS reboot immediately. I can't process installation any more . If I make memory under 4GB, the system can be install completely. This issue seem to also occur on Suse 9.0 Professional AMD64 and can be fixed by upgrading kernel. How about the Suse 9.1 Professional or Kernel 2.6.x ?? Sep 16 23:28:23 linux modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting ac (/lib/modules/2.6.5-7.108-default/kernel/drivers/acpi/ac.ko): Invalid module format If I go to Install -> Repair and choose the hda7 system I can run the 32bit but not the 64bit I have looked but could not find much on dual booting 2 different linux versions and nothing on 32 and 64 bit. Has anyone had any success at this ?

Dear listers, I run SuSE9.0 and 9.1 on different PCs. One funny(?) finding is that on SuSE 9.0: libldap.so.2.xxx on SuSE 9.1: libldap.so.199.xxx Does this mean libldap is downgraded from 9.0 to 9.1? #A similar lib version is found on the i386 plathome. Hi, I don't know how my problem relates to this problem, but here goes: I note that under 9.1 (not 9.0) I insert a USB device and the op system autoloads. HOWEVER, if I plug it into another port (new boot) the hardware is not recognised at all: it seems to assume that this device will always be plugged into this port. System remounts device if moved to first-time port; a bit inconvient if there is another device in the port. Also, I have a 20G "Anypak" which works fine, but my 40G "Anypak" is not recognised. (XP has none of the above problems.) Will probably be looking at a small cluster of duals or some quads soon. Mine is virtually the same as Dabe Murphy's Shuttle XPC SN85G4 (Small Form Factor) Athlon64 3200+ CPU nVidia nForce3 150 chipset (Flawless!) 250GB Seagate (I think) SATA HDD ATI Radeon 9600 (avoid ATI like the plague, it is load of garbage without the driver support) 2x512MB DDR400 RAM DVD+/-RW 5 in 1 card reader also standard, but a bit wobbly about recognising the card. Since 9.1 it has mounted manually reasonably reliably (but not 100%) Brother HL-1430 printer goes fine, and the USB does recognise this. It doesn't report running hot. I use SuSE 9.1 Professional. I started with 9.0 - had so much trouble with the SATA that I went and bought XP, and proceeded to have exactly the same problem. In the end I solved the SATA on 9.0 first, so XP has never been loaded and I've never missed it. There is No FDD on these machines. 9.1 has worked a treat and I love my little black beast except for the ATI card which will be replaced with a Radeon when sufficient cash and momentum develop. I use it for programming multiagent models using Eclipse (love it) and RePast, for writing my PhD using OpenOffice. Most of the time I use it for avoiding these two activities via Civilisation CTP and Creatures. Due to the PhD thing, it's pure standalone. No internet, no network connection at the moment, and no YOU. I really like using Linux and have had generally good experiences with SUSE. Sue Street

SuSE 9.1 Professional AMD Opteron 240 1.4GHz 64-bit Retail CPUs Tyan Tiger K8W S2875ANRF Dual Opteron Server Board PC2700 333MHz DDR ECC RAM - (4GB Total) Maxtor 6Y200M0 200GB 7200RPM 8MB SERIAL ATA HDs - (4) ATI Radeon 9200SE 64MB DDR 8x AGP w/ TV-Out Tagan TG480-U01 480w pwr supply. Topower TP134SAB Hot-swap SATA module. 3ware 9500S-8 Escalade SATA Controller. The only hassle I had was with the 3ware controller and the obvious problems suse has with its setup program (update disk portion) for loading modules on SMP systems at installation time. This is partly 3ware's fault because they could not get their module in the kernel source tree in time for the 9.1 release. The sata raid controller could not be used for a fresh install. I had to use an IDE disk to hold the OS then add the newly compiled module manually. The kernel-syms package had to be loaded for the 3ware module code to compile properly. The only thing I have left is to tear everything down and install clean to test if the 3ware module can handle a kernel update from YaST without breaking. Other than what's mentioned above I have had *no* problems but the machine is not in a production environment yet and isn't doing anything other than sitting there spinning its wheels.
